Environmental Engineer Program Home Contact
I was raised in South Florida beginning my life in Miami and moving to Gainesville in 1967. Currently, I am an Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering Sciences.
For the past 26 years, since receiving my doctorate degree in 1980, I have been a research scientist with the University of Florida’s Howard T. Odum Center for Wetlands, where I am Associate Program Director. During this time I have also been a member of the faculty in the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, and Adjunct Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning. Recently I was appointed Director of the Center for Environmental Policy.
My research has centered on three areas that can be broadly described as natural resource management, including systems ecology, ecological engineering, ecological economics, environmental planning, environmental policy, and wetlands ecology. I have served as consultant on environmental issues to the EPA, USAID, Governments of Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Venezuela, and numerous private consulting firms world-wide. For six years I was consulting ecologist to The Cousteau Society working with their research teams to develop appropriate solutions to a wide array of resource management problems that affect marine resources throughout the world.

Civil engineers have a key role to play in addressing these issues by advancing the knowledge in such diverse areas as solid mechanics, environmental fluid dynamics, structural dynamics and adaptivity, smart materials technology, and molecular biology, among many others. Furthermore, there has been growing recognition of the value of multidisciplinary research in these areas. New findings and understanding in these areas have led to a growing awareness of the central importance of building resource-efficient structures while preserving the natural environment as humankind attempts a transition to a more sustainable relationship with the Earth and its natural resources. Advancing civil engineering, then, is both intellectually challenging and essential for sustaining and improving the quality of life. Research in the department is distributed in three major tracks: Chemical and Biological Processes

Before coming to Duke in 1980, he had taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Texas at Austin and was a group leader at Argonne National Laboratory, where he was responsible for research and development efforts in fracture mechanics. He is a professional engineer registered in Texas, and a chartered engineer registered in Ireland. Professor Petroski's current research activity focuses on the areas of failure analysis and design theory. Ongoing projects include the use of case histories to understand the role of human error and failure in engineering design as well as the development of models for invention and evolution in the engineering design process. His research has been sponsored by the Corps of Engineers, the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and other organizations, and he has published over seventy refereed journal articles in such places as International Journal of Fracture, Engineering Fracture Mechanics, Journal of Applied Mechanics, Structural Safety, and Research in Engineering Design.

Civil engineering
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In modern usage, civil engineering is a broad field of engineering that deals with the planning construction , and maintenance of fixed structures , or public works , as they related to earth water , or civilization and their processes. Most civil engineering today deals with roads structures water supply, sewer flood control and traffic . In essence civil engineering is the profession which makes the world a more habitable place to live. Engineering has developed from observations of the ways natural and constructed systems react and from the development of empirical equations that provide bases for design. Civil engineering is the broadest of the engineering fields. In fact engineering was once divided into only two fieldsmilitary and civil. All the engineering specialties have derived from civil engineering. Civil engineering is still an umbrella field comprised of many related specialities.

    General civil engineering
General civil engineering is concerned with the overall interface of fixed projects with the greater world. General civil engineers work closely with surveyors and specialized civil engineers to fit and serve fixed projects within their given site, community and terrain by designing grading, drainage (flood control), paving, water supply, sewer service, electric and communications supply and land (real property) divisions. General engineers spend much of their time visiting project sites, developing community/neighborhood consensus, and preparing construction plans.
