Potential Occupations Related Student Organizations More Information Are you an environmentalist at heart who would like to design systems or devices to help improve environmental quality? Would you like to devise a project to clean up polluted ground water? Is restoring the health of local ecosystems or preventing pollution something you would like to do? Would you like to monitor air, land, and water quality? Could you design a project to provide safe drinking water or waste water treatment where none exists? Would you like to develop new and improved means to protect the environment or promote conservation of natural resources? If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," then a degree in Environmental Engineering may be for you. Environmental engineers design solutions to prevent future pollution as well as to correct existing pollution problems. The curriculum is based on a strong foundation in mathematics, natural sciences, biological sciences, and engineering fundamentals. Upper-level courses address engineering applications in air, water, land pollution, and environmental toxicology in which pollution prevention and control measures are emphasized. Other topics include agricultural and environmental measurements, rate controlled separations, basic hydrology, environmental law, and environmental ethics. Careful selection of technical electives allows students to specialize in a related field of interest. Minors can be obtained in a variety of related subjects such as

What is Environmental Engineering?
Environmental Engineering is the application of scientific theories and principles to minimize the impact of humans on the environment. The most effective means of protecting the environment is prevention! Environmental Engineers work to design systems that do not pollute our land, air and water. A tremendous challenge remains, however, to develop and implement new technologies to clean up existing pollution problems around the world. Preventing and treating environmental damage requires the expertise of an Environmental Engineer with an in-depth knowledge of relevant physical, chemical and biological systems. The University of Guelph offers this full breadth of study. The Environmental Engineering program at Guelph is not a modified chemical or civil engineering program. It was designed from the ground up as a complete, comprehensive environmental program including a strong foundation in the biological sciences (an essential component in emerging treatment technologies). What do Environmental Engineers Do?

Civil and Environmental Engineering
201 More Civil and environmental engineering is a profession which interfaces closely with society in the planning, design, construction, and management of facilities serving the needs of people. These activities include all transportation modes: highways, aerospace, rivers, and harbors; water resources, hydraulics, and coastal engineering; structures, mechanics, and geotechnical engineering; surveying, mapping, and photogrammetry; urban planning and development; water supply, wastewater treatment, and water-quality management; solid- and hazardous-waste disposal; and quality control and management of the air resources. A civil engineer may specialize in one or several of these activities and may further specialize in a particular function, such as design or management. The work frequently provides close associations with the legal profession, urban and regional planners, economists, public officials, biologists, chemists, financial consultants, architects, and system analysts. Education and practice require a consideration not only of the technological-science aspects of a particular problem but also of its relationship to social, economic, political, and environmental constraints. To accommodate these wide interests, the department is organized into six academic areas: construction management; transportation engineering; geotechnical engineering; structural engineering and mechanics; environmental engineering; and water resources, hydrology, and hydraulic systems.

Civil Engineering Civil and Environmental Engineering Current News Civil Engineers Create the Quality of Life Civil Engineers are the Engines of Peace and Progress During times of peace, much of national public resources are oriented towards civil works. Remember the economic development after the last great war, or observe the emphasis placed on civil engineering infra-structure in any nation immediately after a war. The priorities are clear: water sanitation and distribution, transportation, residential and commercial building, and energy distribution. Civil engineers are the main players of progress during peaceful times. Furthermore, we may affirm that civil engineers design and build the fundamental works and systems on which economic development depends. Civil Engineering at Temple: A Tradition of Excellence at a Very Economical Price An Exciting Future for Our Graduates and Our Department Throughout the fluctuations in the economy, most of our civil engineering graduates find a myriad of employment opportunities in the construction industry, consulting engineering firms, state and national governments, national and private laboratories, and overseas assignments with international organizations. Amongst the various engineering disciplines, civil engineering experiences one of the lowest long-term fluctuations in the employment market. Our department is undergoing exciting changes in its educational curricula and research composition. The number of faculty and enrollment is growing. We expect to hire more professors in the various aspects of civil engineering over the next few years. This will strengthen the diversity and quality of the undergraduate and graduate curricula, and will enhance our research capability. I sincerely hope that your experience in civil engineering at Temple University will be intellectually, personally, and professionally rewarding.
