TEACH: Environment explores the environment of the Great Lakes region, which is blessed with huge forests and wilderness areas, rich agricultural land, hundreds of tributaries and thousands of smaller lakes, and extensive mineral deposits . Environmental issues of concern range from threats to divert water out of the Great Lakes basin to the introduction of nonindigenous invasive species and airborne toxics into the basin. Protection of water quality and sustainable development remain long-term goals. Environment topics
Great Lakes fish and fishing

In the Great Lakes region you'll find one of the world's largest freshwater fisheries. Learn about familiar fish species in the lakes, threats to the fish population, and tips on how to keep safe. And have you ever wondered how much the largest fish ever caught in the Great Lakes weighed? Read on!
Great Lakes native flora

The native flowers and trees of the Great Lakes states and provinces are diverse and beautiful, and contribute to the unique character of the region. Learn about native flora, why native flowers and trees are important, and what threatens their growth. And then take a quiz to test your floral knowledge!
Water levels on the Great Lakes

Water levels are part of the ebb and flow of nature. Learn about the three types of water level fluctuations, how levels are measured on the Great Lakes, and what's causing the recent drop.

Teach To Care, Don't Scare
Jason C., Desert Hot Springs, CA

It has occurred to me that the most obvious way to solve our environmental problems has slipped the grasp of even the most intelligent people. Recently, televisions, radios, and street corners have been plastered with warnings of global chaos soon to wreak havoc in our lives. The truth is that these notes of our earth's declining health fail to inspire the average person to lend a hand.
The obvious answer is to try a new approach. I suggest that an attempt to build pride will work better than any preservation plan. In order to save the earth, we will need a message that bears on our pride and not our conscience. To do that we need only to emphasize the great majesty of the world around us. We cannot expect people to go out of their way to sacrifice for something they cannot see - unless we show them. More than half the people in the world will never see the rainforests, so how will they know it is worth saving? Instead of scaring them with tales of horror and fear, we must describe their beauty and significance. Teach them to marvel at the migrations of animals and fall in awe at the millions of species that inhabit the earth. Teach them to take pride in the only known planet to harvest life. Teach them to respect the gracefulness of the eagle and the power of earthquakes.
Tornadoes, hurricanes, and tidal waves are always discussed because of their destructiveness and never their mystery and importance. We cannot expect children to grow up caring for a planet that they fear, or know little about. If you give a child a present, and teach him to take pride in it, he will take better care of it than if you force him with threats.

Endangered Species Kids' Corner The GLOBE Program The GLOBE Programs brings together K-12 students and their teachers with scientists from around the world to learn more about our global environment. Students make scientific measurements for a host of environmental parameters, and then share their data on the Internet, where it is used by scientists and other students. Areas of interest on the site include: The GLOBE Teachers' Guide; Student Investigations; the Scientists' Corner; GLOBE Data; and Data Exchange. The GLOBE Program is an interagency initiative, whose members include NOAA, NASA, EPA, NSF, the Dept. of Education, and major research universities across the country.

Why are our Officials Permitting 38,000 Drums of Hazardous Waste in Cell 1 to Remain on the
    Ciba-Geigy Superfund Site?
    Toms River, New Jersey

Over the past several months a lot of controversy has been raised over the 38,000 drums that are in Cell 1 and are not part of any remediation process. As we have stated over the past four years or so, these 38,000 drums will be left behind for our children or their children to deal with. Lawsuits over these drums have been filed finally, yet our officials say that Cell 1 is not leaking and intact because it has a double liner system. Somewhere in between is the truth so maybe we should look at the facts and history of Cell 1:
    • 1977 Cell 1 of the new lined landfill was opened. The landfill was permitted by the Department of Environmental Protection to accept only dry non-hazardous chemical waste. 1979 January, the Department of Environmental Protection granted a ten year permit to operate the landfill.

Your first sighting of your school will most likely confuse, and alarm you because it will be nothing like you will be expecting. Korea is heavily urbanised and 90% of schools will be housed inside office buildings often on the 2-7th floors. Often schools will be unnoticeable to anyone in the street unless they think to look up for signs and advertising. Many times this advertising is not in English, as you would expect.
My personal recollection of arriving to work at my school was somewhat frightening and my first reaction was ?Is a school actually located where I am being taken or am I working at a bar or parlour
I had arrived from a long haul flight at 8pm the night before, was collected at he airport by a man who spoke NO English (2 hours late) driven for one hour in the dark to goodness knows where, and deposited into a massive apartment complex on the 8th floor.
    Top of Page
I found out he next morning there were 100 towers in this new complex, all-identical except for the number on the side of the building I was told to wait in the foyer at 9am the next morning. Actually seeing where I was for the first time in daylight hours was a shock! At the organized time a van approached and the Korean driver (in minimum English) asked me to get in. We went around a few blocks and 10 lane roads to arrive at this little block of office buildings. Upon embarking all I could see were drinking bars and nightclubs, certainly nothing looking remotely likes a school. I was ushered into the lift and suddenly the lift opened on the 4th floor to this amazing school environment. The school occupied the 4th and the 5th floor and all children accessed the school by the lift.
