It was first held in 1996, to commemorate the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger in captivity in 1936 in Hobart. It coordinates a statewide forest fire protection plan, provides forest fire protection on state lands, assists rural volunteer fire departments, and develops forest and wildlife management plans for private landowners who choose to manage their property in ways that will protect these resources on their land. The Program promotes public understanding of environmental conservation, enforces Department rules and regulations on DEM lands, and assists the federal government in providing landowner assistance programs. Moreover, additional Program mandates are: to monitor and recommend controls for insects and disease, to work with communities promoting urban tree health, to license arborists, and to certify forest land under the state's Farm, Forest and Open Space Act. The Program manages George Washington Campground, as well as four intensively used beaches, a horseman's campground and a cross-country skiing area. Plans to transfer these responsibilities to the Office of Recreational Services with resultant cost efficiencies have been put on indefinite hold due to budgetary constraints which preclude filling a number of key supervisory positions rendered vacant by retirement. Additional staff are required (as part of the federal grant programs) to assist in programs including stewardship, stewardship incentives, forestry incentives, urban and community forestry, insect and disease control, forest health monitoring, forest legacy, and arborist licensing programs.

Environment home IBM Tops Annual Environment Index for Fourth Consecutive Year May 23, 2005 For the fourth consecutive year, IBM has ranked at the top of the annual Environment Index, first introduced ten years ago by Business in the Environment, part of the independent partnership organization Business in the Community. The Environment Index (formerly known as the BiE Index) is widely recognized as the UK's leading benchmark of corporate environmental engagement. The Index benchmarks companies and sectors against each other based on environmental management and performance in key impact areas, such as climate change, recycling and waste management obtained through a survey. This year's survey also included a closer look at supply chains, the impact of energy use, transport, and production processes. The 178 companies that took part in the voluntary survey and evaluation achieved an overall average score of 79 percent. There were 20 companies, including IBM, whose score of over 95 percent placed them in the Premier League. IBM achieved 100 percent scores throughout the survey and also took the top slot in the IT sector. The company's outstanding performance in the annual Environment Index covers the IBM Corporation as a whole, not just IBM UK, confirming IBM's industry-leading practices worldwide. "Gaining a 100 percent score in every area is a great achievement for the company," said Steve Bushnell, EMEA North Region Environmental Affairs Manager. "It's also confirmation that we can demonstrate continual improvement in the key impact areas."

This is one of the most important conclusions derived from the March 2005 Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) Physician Practice Environment Index report. The 2004 rate of decline amounted to 1.8 percent, compared to a 3.5 percent fall in 2003. A detailed examination of the nine individual indicators included in the MMS Index shows that six declined . In order of their overall impact on the 1.8 percent decline, the three most dominant indicators are: Professional liability insurance rates Ratio of housing prices to physician income Percent of physicians 55 years of age or older While the relative rates of changes have varied somewhat over time, these three indicators have dominated the annual changes in the Index since its inception in 1992. The Performance of the US Index in 2004 In 2004, the US Practice Environment Index declined 2.3 percent, a rate of decline that was 28 percent faster than the Commonwealth.

It is the blend of delighted to dissatisfied employees. Its strength is that it is a concise summary of all responses. Its weakness is that it communicates less about the nature of satisfaction than other indices. The average score does not represent any one person or group within the whole. It is not as useful an index as others for understanding the dynamics of the workplace environment. It does not forecast what future satisfaction levels may be without intervention. The component parts that construct this overall average need to be understood in order to build an effective action plan for improvement.
