The workshop provided the public, medical community, public health community, and building design, construction, and ownership community with a better understanding of public health issues as they relate to the indoor environment. The goals and objectives of the workshop were to: Seek collaboration throughout the public health community in reducing indoor environmentally related communicable respiratory infections, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and allergic diseases, and Gain a better understanding of public health issues and research needs on this topic. Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas which is created naturally by the breakdown of uranium and radium. Radon gas is continuously released from rocks and soil containing these two elements. Uranium and radium may be found in almost all soil and rock, but are most often associated with those containing granite, shale, and phosphate. Once formed, radon itself decays into other radioactive elements, known as "radon daughters" or "progeny". The rate at which a radioactive element decays is expressed as its half-life.
