The workshop provided the public, medical community, public health community, and building design, construction, and ownership community with a better understanding of public health issues as they relate to the indoor environment. The goals and objectives of the workshop were to:
    • Seek collaboration throughout the public health community in reducing indoor environmentally related communicable respiratory infections, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and allergic diseases, and Gain a better understanding of public health issues and research needs on this topic. The Workshop was open to the public. An agenda is available.

    Preserving the Environment
Environmental Division One of the primary responsibilities of the Attorney General's office is safeguarding the public by protecting the environment. Attorney General Madigan plays a significant role in protecting the health and welfare of all Illinois residents and strives to provide a future that will include a safe environment. The Office of the Attorney General handles both civil and criminal litigation of environmental crimes. The civil litigation is handled by the Attorney General's Environmental Enforcement/Asbestos Litigation Division and the criminal litigation is handled by the Environmental Crimes Bureau. Environmental Crimes Environmental Divisions Contact Information Environmental Enforcement/Asbestos Litigation Division Environmental Crimes Bureau The Attorney General and the Clean Air Act Environmental Divisions Contact Information By educating the public, Attorney General Madigan believes we can increase the number of eyes and ears in each community helping to detect environmental crimes. The experience of the Environmental Crimes Bureau reveals that successful prosecution of environmental crimes requires the assistance and cooperation of community residents. Bureau members responds to calls 24 hours a day to speak with callers about their environmental complaints. The Office of the Attorney General will either resolve the matter itself or refer the report to the appropriate agency. If the caller chooses to leave his or her name and phone number, we will notify him or her of the status of the complaint.

      What is radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas which is created naturally by the breakdown of uranium and radium. Radon gas is continuously released from rocks and soil containing these two elements. Uranium and radium may be found in almost all soil and rock, but are most often associated with those containing granite, shale, and phosphate. Once formed, radon itself decays into other radioactive elements, known as "radon daughters" or "progeny". The rate at which a radioactive element decays is expressed as its half-life. (A half-life is the time it takes for half of a radioactive element in a sample to decay into another element.) Radon has a half-life of about three days; its daughter particles all have half-lives of less than half an hour.
What are the health hazards of exposure to radon?

Environment FHWA HEP Environment Human Traffic Calming The term "traffic calming" is often described as the combination of mainly physical measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use and improve conditions for nonmotorized street users. However, the term "traffic calming" also applies to a number of transportation techniques developed to educate the public and provide awareness to unsafe driver behavior. As traffic calming techniques often differ, techniques include police enforcement and education only in some areas. In others, it means the employment of speed humps only, while in others it means the possible use of a wide array of techniques and devices. This web site is dedicated to all the known and/or electronically publicized transportation programs and studies that pertain to traffic calming. process with each organism having all the others as part of its environment.general semanticists, in my experience, tend sometimes strongly to neglect
    http://www.xenodochy.org/gs/organism.html
    Organism-as-a-whole-in-its-environment VS Organism-in-its-environment-as-a-whole
I would look at the difference in the following way. The "as-a-whole" qualifier applies to different focus figures. "Organism-in-its-environment-as-a-whole" would remind us not to try to elementalistically split the organism from its environments. We never exist independently of our environments or contexts - a very "general-semantics" idea. - but not the original one. It is my alteration of the phrase "Organism-as-a-whole-in-its-environment" would remind us not to try to elementalistically split aspects of the organism - such as in body-mind vs Cartesion dualism. This is the original general semantics notion.
    Korzybski,
    Quoting Korzybski (1946)
"From an engineering point of view, in the sense that theories should be WORKABLE and TEACHABLE, giving SIMPLE TECHNIQUES, a GENERAL theory of non-elementalistic EVALUATION, called GENERAL SEMANTICS was formulated by Alfred Korzybski in 1933.... Today, the simple 'organism-as-a-whole' principle is antiquated, since we deal actually only with an organism-as-a-whole-IN-AN-ENVIRONMENT, and on human levels, this must include the neuro-semantic (evaluational) and neuro-linguistic environments ...." (Collected Writings, p575) Korzybski's response to "organism-as-a-whole" was to tack on "in-an-environment". A later general semanticist added "at-a-particular-time-and-place".
