AspectS
AspectS is an approach to general-purpose Aspect-Oriented Programming in the Squeak environment. The intent of AspectS is to extend the Smalltalk environment to allow for experimental aspect-oriented system development. It mainly draws on the results of two projects: the first is AspectJ , a general-purpose aspect-oriented language extension to Java, and the second is MethodWrappers , a mechanism to add behavior to a compiled Smalltalk method. AspectS benefits heavily from the simple, elegant, and open architecture of Squeak itself. AspectS represents an effort to help understand issues that come along with aspects in a dynamic environment like Smalltalk. AspectS allows for coordinated meta-level programming, addressing the tangled code phenomenon by providing aspect related modules. In its first implementation, AspectS is realized using plain Smalltalk only, without extending neither the Smalltalk language nor its virtual machine. WARNING: Incorrectly using AspectS may result in an inconsistent image that can't be trusted anymore. Therefore, before experimenting with AspectS, please save and backup your image.

When you're proud of your brand, it shows and General Mills, whose brand portfolio includes, among others, Betty Crocker, Yoplait, Pop Secret, and Big G cereals, should be very proud. To showcase that pride inside and out, General Mills asked Yamamoto Moss to help brand its campus environment. Sculptures were designed and commissioned, including a 20-foot stainless steel letter G, which stands sentinel on the campus. Interior elements include tone-on-tone walls with raised logos and graphics and directional signage shaped like Betty Crocker's signature red spoon.

The Festival Speech Synthesis System
Festival offers a general framework for building speech synthesis systems as well as including examples of various modules. As a whole it offers full text to speech through a number APIs: from shell level, though a Scheme command interpreter, as a C++ library, from Java, and an Emacs interface. Festival is multi-lingual (currently English (British and American), and Spanish) though English is the most advanced. Other groups release new languages for the system. And full tools and documentation for build new voices are available through Carnegie Mellon's FestVox project (http://festvox.org) The system is written in C++ and uses the Edinburgh Speech Tools Library for low level architecture and has a Scheme (SIOD) based command interpreter for control. Documentation is given in the FSF texinfo format which can generate, a printed manual, info files and HTML. Festival is free software. Festival and the speech tools are distributed under an X11-type licence allowing unrestricted commercial and non-commercial use alike.
Current version
A beta version of 2.0 (labelled 1.95-beta) is available for download. This is the most recent version available for free and unrestricted use. This version is functionally equivalent to 2.0, but we are holding back changing the number to 2.0 until we can accommodate compatibility with newer versions of compilers. New in this release are:

    Published on November 7, 2003.
    Abstract
This article supports a theory that explains the illegal alien problem as part of the general environment in which it is found. It argues that the illegal alien problem is a diverse one and not simply a Mexico-US problem, and suggests that traditional immigration law enforcement strategies encourage an ever-increasing illegal alien population in the United States. Reasons why such a policy of enforcement exists are also discussed.
    The Illegal Alien Problem
Characterizations of the illegal alien range from the sympathetic to the xenophobic. Such characterizations contribute to the confusion about the illegal alien problem. The media usually portrays the plight of the illegal alien in the United States using the historical view of a nation of immigrants. Often, the media resists portraying the illegal alien as anything but the hard working border-crosser that simply wants to feed his family. However, the traditional image of aliens may have changed as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The Siren Music and Sound Package in Smalltalk
What is Siren?
The Siren system is a general-purpose software framework for sound and music composition and production; it is a re-implementation of the Musical Object Development Environment (MODE), the software component of the Interim DynaPiano project. Siren is a collection of about 250 Smalltalk classes for building sound/music applications; it work on VisualWorks Smalltalk running on Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX-based computers with support for MIDI and audio I/O. The source code and documentation files are all available for file transfer from the directory pub/Siren on the server ftp.create.ucsb.edu (i.e., the URL of the directory is ftp://ftp.create.ucsb.edu/pub/Siren ) or via the down-load links below. There are several elements to Siren:
  • the Smoke music representation language (music magnitudes, events, generators, functions, and sounds); voices, schedulers and I/O drivers (real-time and file-based voices, sound and MIDI I/O); user interface components for musical applications (UI tools and widgets); and several built-in applications (editors and browsers for Siren objects).

Welcome to the Interact project home page
Are you frustrated by Learning Management Systems that separate online course interaction into separate web-functionality areas? Tired of having to put your discussion in the "discussion forum" section of your online course - because it was convenient for the programmers to put it there, not because it is pedagogically valuable to separate things this way? Would you like to "build a learning community" rather than "deliver a course"? Then Interact is what you are looking for! Interact is an open source Learning Community Environment. It could also be called an LMS (Learning Managment System), a CMS (Course Management System), or a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). It is flexible enough to be used for building online communities or communities of practice in any environment, not just education.
