Hydro-electricity is clean, renewable energy. The building of hydro-electric schemes does, however, involve significant changes to the environment. High community expectations, in the 1970s, 80s and 90s coincided with greater efforts to minimise environmental impacts associated with Hydo Tasmania’s hydro-electric developments. Detailed environmental studies were carried out on more recent schemes and these were supported with environmental construction guidelines and restoration and revegetation guidelines. Hydro Tasmania has developed considerable expertise in the minimisation of visual and other environmental impacts associated with hydro-electric developments. Moving on from the construction and visual effects of hydro-electric schemes, Hydro Tasmania ensures the ongoing health of its water resource. To that end, Hydro Tasmania has a comprehensive Aquatic Environmental Program, committing over $1 million dollars annually towards managing its water resources in an environmentally sustainable manner. The program incorporates such activities as the Waterway Health Monitoring Program, and the ongoing Water Management Review. The latter is a four-stage process involving the community in the decisions about water management, and is planned for each one of Hydro Tasmania's catchments. Hydro Tasmania takes its environmental responsibilities seriously, and is proactive in anticipating legislative change. By the time the 2000 Tasmanian Water Management Act was legislated, Hydro Tasmania had already delivered a number of changes to its water management practices. These achievements were recognised when Hydro Tasmania won the Government Business and infrastructure Awards for Environmental Excellence for its Aquatic Environmental Program in 2000.

Working toward a Sustainable Society "Resonating with People and Nature" Preservation of our irreplaceable global environment is the most important issue facing the human race.
Because most Suntory products comprise gifts of Nature, we have pursued ongoing environmental preservation activities guided by our corporate philosophy, "Resonating with People and Nature." In addition to eco-product development, acquisition of ISO14001 certification by our production facilities, promotion of energy and resource saving and 100% recycling of by-products and waste, we place a strong emphasis on greening activities. Our particular concern for water, which we cherish as the essence of life and an indispensable element of Suntory products, led us to adopt "Water for Life, Suntory" as our corporate message in 2004, and to make the preservation of water resources the axis of our environmental preservation activities.
In the months and years to come, we intend to continue our pursuit of activities aimed at passing down a sustainable society "Resonating with People and Nature" to future generations.
    Environmental Preservation at Suntory
In 1997, Suntory formulated the "Basic Principles of Suntory's Environmental Policy" (revised in December 2001), which elucidates the concept underlying all business activities related to the environment. This policy provides the basis for unified Group-wide environmental activities.

It specifically fits within the guidelines for Key Stage 2 of the British National Curriculum. Many activities, experiments, discussions and games are suggested, to stimulate learning in different ways. The topics are all interrelated to compliment one another. Extracts from different sections of the package can be viewed online (below) . The whole package can be downloaded (free) as a series of Word documents. These are formatted ready for printing (around 15 pages in the teacher's guide and 15 pages of children's worksheets). Ecological Education - What's the point?
