Entomology is the study of insects and related arthropods. Applied entomology stresses their relations to plants and animals, including humans. Courses fall into two groups: broad, general courses suitable for any student; and professional courses that provide training for research, teaching, and administration in colleges, experiment stations, health services, government agencies, industry, foundations, and private practice.
Students majoring in other fields may have a special interest in entomology as part of their curriculum. Courses 300 or 312 and 313 or 314 or 305 are recommended.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AND NOMENCLATURE
Living organisms are divided into an hierarchical system of classification. For instance, the Animal Kingdom is divided into several phyla (sing. phylum ). Each phylum is further divided into classes , one of which is Insecta. Classes are further divided into orders families , genera (sing. genus ) and finally species
Classification of the butterfly Graphium macleayanus. Each recognised species of organism is known by a scientific name which consists of two parts - its genus name and its species name. So the common house fly is called Musca domestica . This is known as binomial nomenclature . This name is always shown in italics or alternatively is underlined. Common names do not have scientific validity. Some organisms have no common name - others have several. SOBSTDU . Email us here with your comments and feedback.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
Entomology is the field of biological science concerned with the study and management of beneficial and harmful insects and their relatives in relation to other animals, plants, and the environment. Since insects and their relatives affect so many human activities, and because they must be studied and managed in such a variety of environments, the entomologist needs a broad, basic education. The undergraduate program in Entomology leads to the Bachelor of Science degree. The total program emphasizes the development of a sound education, with strengths in the physical and biological sciences necessary to work effectively in modern entomology. Courses aredesigned to give the student an understanding of the structure, classification, identification, function, biology, ecology, and management of beneficial and harmful insects, and the communities and ecosystems where they occur. There are opportunities for undergraduate Entomology students to carry out research projects in many laboratories. Students may also gain work experience in the diverse areas of entomology through employment during the academic year and summer.

entomology, Zoology: General
Related Category: Zoology: General entomology, study of insects , an arthropod class that comprises about 900,000 known species, representing about three fourths of all the classified animal species. Insects are studied because of their importance as pollinators for fruit crops; as carriers of bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases; as parasites of humans or livestock; as destroyers of economically important plants; or as predators of other destructive insects. The role of insects in ecosystems and their control by insecticides or by biological methods are studied in ecology . Some insects such as the fruit fly Drosophila, are used in the laboratory to study genetics ; others are used to study behavior and physiology. The ability to increase productivity of insect populations that supply commercially important products such as dyes, silk, and honey and the deliberate introduction of insect diseases into populations of insect pests involves knowledge of microbiology and biochemistry as well as entomology.

Course Description
ENY 3004 General Entomology (4 credit hours). Prerequisites: a course in general biology; a course in some aspect of invertebrate zoology is also strongly recommended. An introduction to insect classification, biology and morphology. This course provides the necessary background for advanced courses in Entomology and Structural Pest Control. Laboratory work consists of learning major anatomical structure of insects, and training in insect identification, collection, and curation.
Overview of the Course
Insects are by far the most diverse and (with the exception of bacteria) are the most numerous organisms on Earth. They have profound, though often unnoticed, effects on our own lives. In this course students will learn basics of insect structure and function, and the importance of insects in both natural and man-made ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on the various orders and major families of insects and their varied solutions to evolutionary problems.
Student Objectives
  • At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:

Entomology is "the study of insects," according to the Oxford Dictionary of Biology, 4th ed, 2000. Strictly speaking, the true insects are only those belonging to the class Insecta, which does not include the spiders and other animals often thought of as insects such as millipedes or ticks. However, this chapter includes material on both insects and their close relatives since many resources treat these related groups together. Applied entomology is largely excluded, although some basic tools are mentioned. Associations American Mosquito Control Association . c/o Pamela Toups, 2200 E.
