Question
What resources do you have for teaching high school biology?
Response
Hello, In response to your request for information on teaching biology, I conducted a sample search of the ERIC database. Below I have appended my search strategy, 12 citations with abstracts, and directions for accessing the full text. These citations may represent an introductory, rather than exhaustive, search for information on your topic. If you would like to conduct your own free ERIC database searches via the Internet, please visit the ERIC Database Help pages for directions or go directly to http://www.eduref.org/Eric/adv_search.shtml to search. I have also attached some related resources that may be helpful. Thank you for using AskERIC! If you have any questions or would like further assistance, please do not hesitate to send another message. AskERIC Staff Internet Sites: * Biology in Motion.

The Entomology Graduate Student Association (EGSA) plays an important part in both the social and academic activities of entomology students. The group elects a student representative and an alternate to all standing committees, and the president is an ex-officio member at all faculty meetings. The student committee representative may cast one vote. New EGSA officers and committee reprsesentatives are elected by the memberships each May and serve one-year terms. EGSA membership is open to all students, specialists, and other personnel with an interest in entomology. There are no membership dues and all activities are financed as the need arises. The EGSA coordinates a fall picnic and other social events such as turkey raffles, trips to Brewer games, and Friday nights at the Memorial Union Terrace. Intramural sports organized through the association include co-ed volleyball and softball.

Source: John Zenger, (352) 392-1901, ext. 141 GAINESVILLE-If you think you've got bugs in your computer, try logging into the University of Florida's 4-H Bug Club. With a few keystrokes, bugs are virtually coming at you from the computer screen. Virtual is the key word here, because these are cyberbugs for a cyberclub. Bugmaster John Zenger, a professor in UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, says kids, bugs and cyberspace make a good mix. "This appeals to today's youth, who are used to multimedia glitz and color," Zenger said. "More and more, children have access to the World Wide Web and can join online activities. "And kids like bugs," Zenger adds. "They only develop an aversion to insects after exposure to grown-ups' 'icky bugs' prejudices." The club is a little different for the 4-H program. "Meetings" are conducted via the Internet, and kids can get into the "clubhouse" via any computer with online capability. On the agenda: learning. "Insects are an important part of the ecosystem and the natural environment," Zenger said. "Insects impact us in numerous ways, far more than you might imagine: the food we eat, clothes we wear, whether we have a picnic."

Timeline History of the Department of Entomology 1900's In 1899 a Legislative Act authorized the employment of an "expert entomologist" by the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, resulting in the establishment of the Department of Entomology. Frederick W. Mally was hired that year to establish a department and devise controls for insect pests, especially the boll weevil. During the period 1899-1902, Mally established teaching and research programs in entomology. E. Dwight Sanderson succeeded Mally as department head in 1902 and greatly expanded research and teaching activities in the department. In 1904 there were three entomologists in the department: E. D. Sanderson A. F. Conradi , and Louis Scholl. Three undergraduate level courses in economic entomology were offered, along with a course in apiculture and an advanced course in economic entomology. This number increased to eleven in 1907. Dr. Sherman Bilsing lectures to an Entomology class early in the century. Ivan Shiller 1910's Wilmon Newell became head of the academic Department of Entomology as well as of the Division of Entomology in the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES) in 1910.
