ACADEMIC AREA: Study Skills/ Listening Skills OCCUPATIONAL AREAS: All LENGTH OF UNIT (DAYS): This could be done either in a one to two day lesson plan or as a beginning activity to each day's work. I will use this as a daily activity to increase and reinforce listening skills. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: Students need to develop the skill of accurate listening. To be good employees (students), they need to be able to listen objectively to information given to them. They need to be able to distinguish fact from opinion and to understand a speaker's inferences and biases. A critical listener should be able to interpret speaker's feelings and motives for saying what they do. Accurate listening is the first step in developing critical listening skills. This activity will build these skills. The teacher will develop a list of desired listening skills. I have used one from the Instructor's Big Book of Study Skills , compiled by Susan Hoover, 1983. See lesson plan for list. Then each day for 5- 1 minutes at the beginning of the class, the teacher will practice one of these skills. Some listening skill areas on the list will take longer. They should be practiced at least a couple of times of week in longer sessions. See lesson plan for examples.

Speaking and Listening Activities
It is intended that the following speaking and listening activities be integrated with the other language processes and not taught in isolation. In each of the following activities, both speaking and listening are addressed to provide for the development of students' speaking and listening abilities in conjunction with one another.
Conversation
Conversation serves many functions. People use conversation to establish relationships through personal expression, to find out information, and to compare views with others. Conversation provides a means for sharing experiences and solving problems. Teachers can capitalize on the critical role of conversation in students' lives and use it to enhance their language learning. Through experiences with the language processes, the students can discover a steadily expanding series of topics and purposes for conversation. Students should have opportunities to talk about a variety of topics such as projects, books, characters, television programs, and videos. Because what students talk about is easier for them to write about, the topics of their conversations often act as springboards for their writing. It is important for students to converse about topics of personal interest. Ideas for classroom conversation come to students through reading, listening to others talk, and reflecting on the experiences that school and life have to offer. Experiences in the English language arts classroom and in other subject areas make excellent sources for conversation. Assigned topics may not inspire students to talk as much as student-selected topics. To facilitate and encourage student conversation, teachers could:

What is reading workshop?
Reading workshop is one way of organizing a balanced literacy program. The purpose of reading workshop is to promote fluency and to provide an occasion to promote the love of reading and to learn about texts in various ways. Reading workshop builds a community of readers as students receive support from their peers and interact with others to develop good literacy habits. Reading workshop is not intended to replace guided reading groups where specific needs are addressed in a flexible, small group setting. All students should have opportunities to meet in guided reading groups for explicit instruction with new learnings. Teachers can meet with guided reading groups and /or conference with individual students during independent reading. These are complimentary components that need to be a part of the Balanced Literacy Program.
How is reading workshop structured?

GUIDED READING: OUR INTERPRETATION The aim of Guided Reading is to help children learn to use independent reading strategies successfully. Whilst it is generally held that Guided Reading requires children to read independently and silently, this is not the interpretation we have. We approach Guided Reading more as a shared reading process where the teacher and children interact together with the text. We believe this approach allows for:
  • a more focussed teaching session an opportunity to teach and extend children of a similar ability an opportunity to learn from each other, teacher and children alike
