Questions and Answers about Assessment and Adult ESL
CAELA staff member, Carol Van Duzer, talks about why it is important for adult ESL programs to have comprehensive and assessment and evaluation plans. Read more.
Question of the Month: What are SPLs and how are they related to the National Reporting System (NRS)? Answer: The Student Performance Levels (SPLs) are descriptions of English language proficiency levels for adult non-native speakers of English. The SPLs were developed in the mid-1980s as part of the Mainstream English Language Training (MELT) project under the Office of Refugee Resettlement of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The ideas that follow will not necessarily be new ideas for most of the visitors to this site; they are ideas that have been used by myself, my colleagues at NTID, and I am sure by many other teachers nationwide with varying degrees of success. Sometimes trying the same idea with a different class or with a new twist will produce very different results. When trying to decide on which ideas to include in this module, I thought about how much time would be involved in implementing them in the classroom. I tried to choose activities and assignments that required the least amount of preparation for content area teachers and that could be easily integrated into any curriculum. Most of the activities can also be used at any level, from elementary to postsecondary with little or no modification.

Students often finish a reading, close the book, and don't think about it again until they arrive in class. The following activities can be used after a reading to help students analyze concepts for a deeper understanding of ideas and organize information for later retrieval: Graphic Organizers Encourage students to use graphic organizers (charts or concept "maps") to help them visualize concepts and key relationships between ideas from their readings. These should be started right after students have completed a reading, whereas revisions and additions can be done after class discussions. It's a good idea to show students several examples of graphic organizers and explain which ones work well with different text patterns. Many reading skills texts have examples of various graphic organizers with explanations of how they might best be used. Here is an example of one type of graphic organizer for comparing two concepts:

They should ask each other the important questions of "who," "what," "when," "where," and "why." Tip: ESL: Improving Your Speaking Skills Want to improve your spoken English skills? Try practicing on a friend. Find someone who has good English-speaking skills and practice with them. Don´t be afraid to call people on the phone, ask for help at businesses or even to ask questions of people on the street. Every opportunity you have to speak English is an opportunity to improve your speaking skills. Tip: Using The Newspaper Have students use pictures, comics and headlines from the newspaper to make a collage of activities and hobbies that their families do together. This works as a great activity to get to know your students at the beginning of the year and gets parents involved in homework right away!

Comprehension
Comprehension involves making or gathering meaning from texts print. This meaning encompasses three interdependent levels of understanding: literal, inferential or interpretive, and evaluative or applied. This means that when students read, view or listen, they are exploring three questions:
  • What is being said? What does it mean? What do I think or do about it?
Effective approaches to comprehension develop meaning at all three levels. They involve students in a range of roles as readers, and are contextualised in or framed by activities in which students bring their own experiences and knowledge to texts. Such activities include:
  • research reading and discussion of literature tracking of a story or issue as it unfolds in the media reading, discussing and analysing newspaper articles

Cast a spell with these easy activities from FamilyFun by Mary Leonhardt
of 5 Helping children fall in love with books has been a personal crusade of mine for two decades, both as a high school English teacher and a mother of three. In observing my students over the years, I've discovered that avid readers acquire their love of reading at home, from their parents. No teacher can pass along a passion for books the way a loving mother or father can. My best readers remember cozy bedtime stories, sharing books with friends and siblings, andperhaps most importantthe freedom and encouragement to read whatever they wanted to. What follows are some tips for nurturing an early love of reading. These ideas are offered as a jumping-off point; all children are different, and what works for one child may not work for another. The key thing to remember is that anything to do with reading and writing needs to be fun. If you tune into your child's interests and passions, you'll be able to develop your own strategies for giving him a lifelong love of readingin my view, the best gift we parents can give our children.

EN/ENG English EN 94 English Reading and Writing Skills Review (1:0:1)
Is for college students who need a brief review of the most fundamental reading and writing skills: decoding and identifying subject matter, main idea, major and minor supporting details, drawing inferences and conclusions. While there is a review of grammar and usage, emphasis is on writing skills, including a brief review of how to write effective essays in correct English using standard organization patterns, such as comparison/contrast, process, definition and persuasion. Upon completion of this course, students retake the Accuplacer test in the areas of reading and English in an attempt to test out of EN 96, EN 98, and/or EN 97 and EN 99. (Credit does not apply toward graduation.) EN 96 English Foundations
Is designed to strengthen the fundamental skills necessary for writing coherent and varied sentences in standard English. Standard English usage and correct mechanics are emphasized while students are introduced to the process approach to writing through lectures, labs, small-group activities and independent projects on the personal computer. In addition, basic research techniques are introduced. (Credits do not apply toward graduation.)
