Practical activities to help students with reading. Newspaper reading activities
Kate Joyce, British Council
Newspapers are a useful tool in the ELT classroom for improving reading skills and enhancing students' knowledge of current affairs. There is a danger of putting students off reading newspapers if articles are used in the same way as course books, with tedious comprehension activities. If used in a more inspiring way, newspapers can help students to develop not only reading skills but also writing, grammar, vocabulary and speaking skills. Below are some tips and activities which I believe can help. Tips
  • Encourage students to read newspapers outside the classroom, explaining that ongoing reading can help them to articulate/discuss ideas more fluently, as well as read and understand a whole variety of texts. Use different newspapers to suit your students' tastes. If you are teaching in an area where English language newspapers are produced for the local community, these may include articles and topics of particular interest and relevance to your students.

Gareth Rees, teacher and materials writer, London Metropolitan University Topical news stories are a great source of teaching material. This article presents different ways to exploit news reports in the classroom and focuses on raising the level of involvement and participation that the students have in the lesson. Selection criteria It is important that you choose your news article wisely. You should consider the following criteria.
  • Appropriacy of topic
Will your students be interested in the topic? Will it be upsetting for some students? Is it suitable for the age group?
  • Length
Be careful to avoid articles that are particularly long. Reading a news report in a second language is demanding, and if the article is too long it will discourage students. If the news report is lengthy, do not be afraid of editing. The style of news articles often means that entire paragraphs can be omitted without affecting the overall sense of the piece.
  • Language content
Besides the general interest in the topic, this may well be the most important selection criteria. Does the article contain a useful lexical set (crime, money)? Are there some good grammar exponents (past perfect, reported speech) or interesting syntax and sentence style? These will provide the basis of your language work on the text, how can the language be exploited?

Introduction
Welcome to this site. On this page you will find teaching activities for English - especially reading. These are intended for use by teachers and pupils at KS2 and KS3 of the National Curriculum for England and Wales. They may be helpful for teachers and students working at other levels. Although this page concentrates on reading, most activities will require pupils to speak and listen and to write at different times. If you are a pupil, you may be able to work on your own. If this is too hard, your teacher will help you. Remember that this site is written for children and grown-ups, in primary, junior and secondary schools, as well as teachers and other visitors.

After reading activities
Imagining Changing Writing Speaking ... Conclusion As always our aim is for the students to have fun and enjoy reading because it is through enjoyment that learning comes. Thus effective after reading activities use the book as a springboard into active language use rather than try and wring every drop of meaning out of it. Time spent reading another book is better spent than time dissecting the last one! Imagining These activities ask students to use their imaginations. Ask them to guess what the main characters have in their pockets, handbags, or desk drawers. Play 'Hollywood' and choose which film stars would play which characters. Why not ask them to 'flesh out' the characters by making up a lot more personal details about them? Ask students to imagine that they are in the story as an extra character: what happens? Choose events in the story which are mentioned but not fully described and ask students to fill in all the details. Ask students to imagine that the characters are all animals, or trees, or fruit. What kind of animal, fruit or tree would they be and why? Ask students to think of a popular song, film or TV programme which would make a good title for the book. A great activity is when groups of students mime episodes from the book (perhaps while you (or a student) read the relevant section out).
