The Edited version of this Article can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A523450 The state of Monarchie is the supremest thing vpon earth: for Kings are not onely Gods Lieutenants vpon earth, and sit vpon Gods throne, but euen by God himselfe they are called Gods. - James I, in a Speech to the Lords and Commons of Parliament at Whitehall, 21 March, 1609. A King is a thing men have made for their own sakes, for quietness' sake. - John Selden, Table Talk (1696 edition) The English Civil War was not, as is often portrayed, a war between dashing Cavaliers and sombre Parliamentarians, these are just typecast roles and are as false as modern stereotypes. It was a war between Englishmen; both armies contained the nobility, gentlemen, craftsmen and the common man. This was in essence a political war fought over constitutional issues between a King who claimed to rule by divine right and a Parliament that professed to have rights and privileges independent of the crown; defining the role of Monarch, Parliament and the military for centuries to come. Its effects in many areas can still be seen today; for example in the way that the military today swears loyalty to the crown (with the Monarch as its Commander-in-Chief) but is funded (on an annual basis) by Parliament.

Charles Stuart, King of England
Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector
Thomas Fairfax
The king, Charles, raised his standard at Nottingham in what is accepted by historians as a sign by the king that he intended to fight Parliament for power in England. His support came from the nobility, large landowners, the church and from people in the north and west of England. In October, a battle was fought at Edgehill but neither side won it and from a military point of view it was an indecisive battle.
Oliver Cromwell was appointed the leader of Parliamentís cavalry. Parliament made an alliance with the Scots which threatened Charles from the north. Both sides won minor battles but none of them were decisive.
The kingís Royalist army was heavily defeated by Parliament at Marston Moor in Yorkshire. Charles lost control of the north of England.
The New Model Army was formed by Parliament. This exceptionally well trained force inflicted a severe defeat on the army of Charles at Naseby. The king lost his guns and ammunition at the end of this battle. Charles surrendered to the Scots in the hope that Parliament would fall out on what to do after Naseby. There was conflict in Parliament on how the church in England should be run.

Arms and Armor in the Age of the Musketeer
The English Civil War
By Ty Bailey The English Civil War can be viewed as the precursor to the popular uprisings of the next century. Marx would see in the war a class struggle between the new urban plutocracy and the old landed gentry. This does not take everything into account however, because the events that led to the onset of civil war are hard to nail down and subject to a great deal of speculation. The sad truth is that many historians have found that the war was started by a series of blunders both by the king and the Parliament and that there was no overall method to the madness of the revolution. Charles I was crowned the king of England and Scotland in 1625. He was a firm believer in the divine right of kings and that his power, both in church and state, were not to be questioned. He loathed to call on Parliament but when his military ventures in the latter part of the 1620s took a turn for the worse he was forced to call on them three times in order to gain much-needed funds. The last of these three times was in 1628. The parliament not only refused to vote him funds but brought forward legislation that he felt would undermine his authority. He disbanded the parliament and decided that they were no longer needed; thus began the personal rule of Charles I. He brought about taxes without the support of parliament and went about ruling as he saw fit and for a time it seemed to work.

1. General books. The historical debate on the causes of the civil war is covered by L Stone, The Causes of the English Revolution (2nd edn, 1986), R C Richardson (ed), The Debate on the English Revolution Revisited (1989) and A Hughes, The Causes of the English Civil War (1991). Over the past decade or so Conrad Russell has written extensively on the causes of the war - see especially his The Causes of the English Civil War (1990) and Fall of the British Monarchies (1991), which emphasises that the English civil war was part of a broader 'British' problem. A different perspective, focusing on the relationship between the centre and the provinces in England, is provided by A Fletcher, The Outbreak of the English Civil War (1981). R Ashton, Counter-Revoltuion: The Second Civil War and Its Origins (1994) is a very detailed study of the years 1646-8, while A Woolrych, Soldiers and Statesmen (1987) is an equally detailed examination of the role of the army within the political developments of 1647-8. D Underdown, Pride's Purge (1971) is a masterly analysis of parliamentary politics between the civil war and the execution of the King. C V Wedgwood, The Trial of Charles I (1964) is the standard account of that episode. The period 1649-60 is surveyed by three excellent chronological surveys - A Woolrych, England Without a King (1983), R Hutton, The British Republic (1990) and T Barnard, The English Republic (2nd edn, 1997). There are also two good collections of articles on this period - G Aymler (ed), The Interregnum (1972) and J Morrill (ed), Revolution and Restoration (1992). The best detailed account of political developments 1649-53 is provided by A B Worden, The Rump Parliament (1974) and A Woolrych, Commonwealth to Protectorate (1982). S Kelsey, Inventing a Republic (1997) is a broader study of the issues surrounding the establishment of republican rule.

Historical Biography: Oliver Cromwell
Learn about the life of Oliver Cromwell, his role in the English Civil War and time as Lord Protector of the Realm.
Oliver Cromwell is one of the most colourful of people in British history, establishing himself as both a skillful military leader and astute politician. He helped to win the English Civil War for the Parliamentarians and steadied the country afterwards with a series of sensible political and social reforms. Born in Huntingdon, England in 1599, Oliver Cromwell was brought up in a family that was reasonably well off, but had by no means the wealth to scale the social ladder which, at the time, brought a certain power with it. Strong religious beliefs were present in the household; the family were Puritans (English Protestants that wished to simplify and regulate forms of worship). A good education was affordable, so Cromwell schooled at Huntingdon Grammar, during which time his father died, and Cambridge University. He graduated and became a small landowner, earning a crust farming and collecting rent. He became a respected figure amongst local Puritans from around 1527 when a call from God saw him emerge as a religious leader and foremost in the running of the church. Two years earlier Charles I had come to power. Soon he came to be considered as an oppressor of the Puritans, sometimes having them randomly assaulted with no apparent motive other than oppression. Essentially he was a Catholic who wished to impinge certain rituals and ceremonies upon the Church of England. Then, in 1629, he dissolved Parliament, deeming it would be better to rule England by himself. Throughout the 1630’s he didn’t call Parliament once, which obviously made him very unpopular with them. At the same time Cromwell had joined Parliament as MP for Cambridge and in 1640 events began that would form the destinies of Charles and himself in extremely contrasting ways.

Cromwell, Oliver (1599-1658), English soldier and statesman, a Huntingdonshire gentleman who rose to power as the most successful general of the English Civil War , provided leadership for the New Model Army in its quarrel with the Long Parliament , and was instrumental in the trial and execution of Charles I in 1649. His conquest of Scotland and Ireland (1649-1653) preserved the English Commonwealth , and he governed Great Britain as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death. Early Years The fortunes of the Cromwell family were made with the dissolution of the monastries by Thomas Cromwell , Henry VIII's minister and their kinsman. They changed their family name (previously Williams) to that of their benefactor. Oliver, however, was the only son of a younger son of the family, who had also to provide for seven daughters; his inheritance was slender. Born in Huntingdon on April 25, 1599, he attended the local grammar school before going to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, which had a reputation for Puritanism . Cromwell, as normal with most gentlemen students, did not take a degree at university, and if he studied law in London, as is commonly said, there is no surviving record of it. In 1620 he married Elizabeth Bourchier and settled down on his modest estate. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Huntingdon in the parliament of 1628-1629.
