Students who have not taken the TOEFL exam or have scored below 500 on the paper-based or below 173 on the computer-based exam will be considered for admission to the ESL program. An international student who does not have the English proficiency required to immediately begin taking academic coursework will be given an in-house English diagnostic test. This test is administered once the student arrives on campus. This test assesses a students written and spoken English skills and helps determine placement within the ESL program. Our ESL program has three proficiency levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. One of the special features of our ESL classes is that they will count for credit toward your academic degree at Columbia College. You may even be able to take academic coursework while you complete the ESL program. Once the ESL program is successfully completed, students receive a certificate of completion and may begin to pursue a full academic course of study at Columbia College.

Below is information about each category found at ESLJOBS.com Includes: ESL jobs from all of Asia and Oceania. Ads in this category include opportunities to teach English in Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Micronesia, etc. TEFL positions in South Asian countries (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.) are also included in this section.
Comment: The Asian TEFL market provides perhaps the most opportunities for those looking to teach English abroad. Teaching English in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan has been lucrative for many years now, and many EFL schools actively seek native speakers looking to teach English overseas. China, of course, is also becoming a hot spot for teaching overseas, and salaries are rising accordingly. Though TEFL jobs in South East Asia, in general, tend to pay less than those in the countries mentioned above, many ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teachers find the tradeoffs worthwhile. Visa restrictions may apply for ESOL teachers looking for positions in Australia and New Zealand. (ESL JOBS top) Includes: ESL jobs from Europe. This category includes positions teaching English in both Western Europe (the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, Greece, etc.) and Eastern Europe (Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, etc.). Teaching English opportunities from Turkey are also included here.

As the world rushes to acquire English, the new lingua franca of international commerce, diplomacy, and higher education, the bulk of teaching opportunities abroad are for English teachers. Your "credential" is simply being a native speaker of the English language. Some formal ESL training, whether in TOEFL or TESOL, is almost always a plus when you seek to teach English abroad. The ability to teach ESL may be all you need to obtain a job and a work permit abroad in areas such as Asia and Eastern Europe. Many other English teaching jobs exist around the globe, as detailed below. To learn more about the array of acronyms relating to the booming field of teaching English abroad, click here ESL Training and Job Placement Schools and Programs If you lack experience or credentials, you may want some formal study, often generically called ESL training, before heading overseas in search of an English language teaching position. Virtually all positions require only a bachelor's degree. However, candidates with advanced training and either a certificate in ESL or a master's degree in TESOL will have greater flexibility and command more pay. Organizations in more than one country are listed under
