Program Ph.D. Major/Minor Info Courses Past Graduate Thesis B eyond the Bachelor degree, a Ph.D. student must complete a minimum of 15 credits in an approved major field, 9 credits in an approved minor field, and another 9 credits in an approved minor field which is not directly related to the student's major field. Currently, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNLV offers Communications, Computer Engineering, Control System Theory, Electromagnetics and Optics, Power Systems, Signal Processing, and Solid State Materials and Devices as approved major fields. Specific courses that can be applied to specific major fields are listed in detail later in this section of the manual.
Each student must complete two approved minor fields. To complete a minor field, a student must complete a minimum of 9 credits in an approved minor field and have an overall minimum GPA of 3.33(B+=3.30) for the 9 minor field credits. Of the 9 required credits in each minor field, a minimum of 6 credits must be in 700-level courses. Fields are related according to three electrical engineering general areas, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and Applied Physics. Electrical engineering general areas and their fields are listed below. A student must complete one minor that is not in the same general area as their major field.
Specific courses that can be applied to specific minor fields are listed in detail in this section of the manual. Some courses may be listed under two different fields. Such a course can be applied to only one field. If a student wishes to complete a minor field related to electrical engineering, such as mathematics or physics, the minor field courses must be approved by the student's advisory committee and the graduate committee. Adviser for Computer Science Sequence 3-2 Engineering course schedule The 3-2 engineering program allows qualified students the opportunity to study at Occidental for three years, completing their undergraduate experience with an additional two years at either the California Institute of Technology or Columbia University. At the end of the five years, the student receives two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in the Combined Plan from Occidental and a Bachelor of Science in the selected field of engineering from the engineering school. In essence, it's the best of both worlds: an undergraduate experience which covers both the liberal arts and sciences as well as engineering. In contrast to many engineering programs, students choosing the Combined Plan do not commit themselves in the freshman year exclusively to an engineering major. This flexibility is particularly advantageous to capable students whose abilities and interests span many fields. There are three course sequences to choose from, depending upon the student's career goals. Most students follow the recommendations of the Physical Sequence, with its greater emphasis on physics. However, those students primarily interested in pursuing chemical engineering should follow the Chemical Sequence, while those who prefer computer science or operations research should follow the Computer Science Sequence. The program is rigorous, and students should start following the 3-2 science curriculum their first semester at Oxy. A minimum Occidental GPA of 3.25 is required to qualify. Aside from the sequence of courses, there are no formal actions required on the students' part until the junior year. ... 3-2 Engineering FAQ
