BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING We offer a number of internationally renowned, rigorous academic programs in a beautiful setting on the Macdonald Campus of McGill.
Our undergraduate program leads to the B.Eng. (Bioresource) . Because of our excellent staff-to-student ratio we are able to maintain small class sizes. Our graduates are more than adequately prepared for successful careers after graduation; they have had years of hands-on work with cutting-edge technologies, been challenged to master the principles of engineering, and have developed the skills required for their chosen area of specialty. For detailed information about the undergraduate program (B.Eng. Bioresource), career possibilities, and profiles of some of our alumni, click on these links:

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Agricultural engineers apply knowledge of engineering technology and biological science to agriculture. (See biological scientists and agricultural and food scientists elsewhere in the Handbook .) They design agricultural machinery and equipment and agricultural structures. Some specialties include power systems and machinery design; structures and environment; and food and bioprocess engineering. They develop ways to conserve soil and water and to improve the processing of agricultural products. Agricultural engineers work in research and development, production, sales, or management.
Employment About this section Back to Top About one third of the 2,900 agricultural engineers employed in 2002 worked for professional, scientific, and technical services, supplying consultant services to farmers and farm-related industries. Others worked in a wide variety of industries, including crops and livestock as well as manufacturing and government.
Job Outlook About this section Back to Top Employment of agricultural engineers is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2012. The growing interest in worldwide standardization of agricultural equipment should result in increased employment of agricultural engineers. Job opportunities also should result from the increasing demand for agricultural products, the continued efforts for more efficient agricultural production, and the increasing emphasis on the conservation of resources. In addition to those resulting from employment growth, job openings will be created by the need to replace agricultural engineers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force.

Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants (MSc/Dip)
Aims to bridge traditional and modern approaches and equip biologists, conservationists and ecologists with a high level of skill in pure and applied taxonomy and a wide knowledge of biodiversity and its investigation. The course combines instruction in the function, management and funding of taxonomic collections and institutes. Currently the course is restricted to work with plants and fungi and is run in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. Teaching is by lectures, seminars, workshops and practical work. Assessment is by coursework, written examinations and (for MSc) dissertation. Ecological Economics (MSc/Dip)
Ecological economics is a study of the interactions between ecological and economic systems. The course will focus on the role of economics and ecology in the design and implementation of sustainable economic and environmental polices. Such multidisciplinary fields of study are increasingly important as decision making agencies become to understand that in order to solve real world environmental problems, we must adopt an holistic approach to research, decision-making and policy implementation.
