Case Studies - Science/Technology Fair Organizing Group:
Engineering societies, industries and universities in the Rochester (NY) area. Brief description of the program
The "E (Engineering, Exploration, and Experimentation) Fair" is an extension of National Engineers Week but takes place in April to allow students to complete the projects they might have been making for school anyway. (Also to allow us to hold the Fair in the RIT Ice Rink; without the ice.) The fair is a day-long event with separate daytime and evening programs. During the day, middle school students display individual engineering projects for judging, and/or participate in a team competitions including robotics. Each team has a sponsoring teacher and a local volunteer engineer-mentor. Typically, 650 students representing 28 middle schools, participate. Encircling these exhibits, 20-30 technical engineering societies, industries, trade and educational groups display hands-on engineering and science activities for all ages. High school students also attend to gain exposure to engineering career opportunities. Total attendance runs to 4000. Budget:
Between $7000 and $8000 is raised annually, through donations from the various engineering societies and local companies. It costs $3000 for the facility (rental, custodian, utilities, supplies for booths), $1500 for mailing, stationery, publicity, $1000 for gifts for all participants, $2000 for awards.

Some of these ideas are expounded in the case studies treated here. Also integrated within some of the case studies is the idea of control system design.

System Dynamics (24.509) VI. Mathematical Modeling of Engineering Systems Introduction The modeling of any physical system requires intimate knowledge of the physical processes involved. The engineer must decide what processes are to be modeled and how detailed an analysis is required. Approximations made in the modeling process can greatly alter the calculated dynamic behavior. Therefore, each simplifying assumption must be justified. To illustrate different techniques used in the modeling process, we will look at several specific case studies, as follows:

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
A project such as this cannot be the work of just one person. Although, as principal investigator, I accept full responsibility for the flaws in the project, credit for whatever merits it has must be shared with many others. First and foremost, I thank the more than 50 practicing engineers for their time and thoughtfulness in providing us with illustrations that gave us ideas for our case studies. The interviews ranged from one hour to more than five hours with an engineer who met with us on two occasions. One company provided us with access to its employees for an entire working day. Not only did these engineers provide us with a wealth of ideas, their enthusiasm for our project was a continual source of support. Special thanks go to my co-principal investigator, James Jaksa (Communication), who shared interviewing responsibilities for the project (even sacrificing a week-long Spring Break to talk with engineers). He also wrote preliminary drafts of many of the cases. My Philosophy colleagues John Dilworth and Joseph Ellin served as consultants on the project. John Dilworth designed the software shell for the case studies and provided commentary on twenty cases. He also tried out many of the cases in his business ethics classes. Joseph Ellin wrote commentaries on more than twenty-five of the cases. In addition, I had two graduate assistants during the three years of the project. David Zacker assisted during the first two years of the project. He helped John Dilworth with the software design, created program files for cases, interviewed engineers, and wrote earlier versions of cases. Charles Marsh assisted in the third year, refining the software versions of cases and helping prepare the final set of materials available for classroom use.

Professional Ethics in Engineering Practice: Discussion Cases
These cases present situations that raise ethical questions common in engineering practice and research. They are based on original cases brought to the BER (Board of Ethical Review) of the NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) for review. The NSPE BER reviews cases with the specific purpose of making an ethical judgment on the actions of (only) the engineers in the cases, based solely on the NSPE Code of Ethics. The Online Ethics Center is presenting new versions of these cases that are more suitable for group and class discussion. These rewritten cases are deliberately open ended to encourage exchange regarding how one should respond to the situation rather than simply judgments about what someone already did. The discussion cases vary in the extent of their resemblance to the corresponding NSPE case. Each rewritten case has a link to the original NSPE version.

Developed by James K.A. Smith
The capstone assignment in this course on Engineering Ethics will be a group presentation based on a selected case study in engineering ethics. Rather than choosing historical cases and have students engaged in mere ethical "assessment," we will use "open-ended" cases which require students to exercise actual ethical judgment. In 1949, Stuart Hampshire observed that many courses in ethics using case studies only teach students to be the ethical counterpart of art critics rather than the ethical counterpart of artists. Our goal is not to simply be ethical spectators, but ethical actors . These cases are meant to be a kind of "practice" for work-environment decisions engineers will face. As such, the cases do not focus on catastrophic disasters, but rather the more mundane decisions that face engineers in everyday practice. Working in groups also lends a 'real-world' flavor to the project, since most engineering decisions are made as part of a team. REQUIREMENTS 1. Each group will consist of three or four students who will be responsible for planning and leading a 20-25 minute class presentation on a case in engineering ethics, and managing discussion afterwards. Students will form their own groups and submit a group list to the instructor by the date specified below (see

In this case on genome privacy, students work together to research one of six assigned lobbying groups' views in this area and then present their groups' position before a mock meeting of a U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee as they consider voting on the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. In working through the case, students learn about single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), common molecular biology techniques, and current legislation governing genome privacy. The case was developed for use in an introductory biology course entitled "Genes, Evolution, and Development." It could be readily adapted for a genetics or molecular biology course. Why Sex Is Good

ABSTRACT Engineering students are expected to be not only technically profi cient, but, also to exhibit a sound awareness of real-world issues such as marketing, finance, communications, and interpersonal relations. We found that this is best learned by participating in a case study method of instruction. This paper describes the results

Case Study 6: Engineering Support Team Client
A world-class Forbes 1000 computer manufacturer. Problem
With ever-changing demands on IT, both in technologies and in business objectives, this client needs the flexibility to shift resource priorities and to quickly get additional expert resources as needed. Consequently, they have employed Taos' services flexibly to supplement their core engineering IT support staff with a number of Taos consultants consistently since 1999. Taos Solution
With more than 15 years experience at assessing, analyzing, designing, and deploying IT solutions, Taos achieved dramatic results for the client - Taos uncovered the fact that the proposals had been based on an RFP with overstated technical and volume requirements. Supported Deployment This is a typical Supported deployment, with a group of consultants working under client direction, receiving plenty of support from Taos as well. Our staff range in skill set from junior Unix support personnel to senior and architect level Unix administrators. Responsibilities include managing their data, the systems running processes, and designing and continuing to develop their issue management system.

Flex Case Study - Sharpcards Management Dashboard
In a previous entry, we announced the SharpCards project - this has actually been the first European deploy of a live Flex project, delivering to the client a management dashboard that can be used by call-centre staff and business owners, for real-time business data. The executive dashboard is deployed in the customer's production environment -we've shown a simple screenshot above, unfortunately for confidentiality reasons we can't show some of the more interesting screens, nor can we make a real demo available. The "Flextranet" as it was known during development, offers call-centre staff an intuitive desktop-like application that allows the interrogation of complex business data, regarding the bets placed by customers. iteration::two delivered estimates to our client for a JSP extranet, and a Flex-based extranet - despite our years of expertise in delivering web applications with JSP, the Flex development was quicker, due to the interactive sorting, filtering and data mining that the client required. By delivering the dashboard application with Flex, not only did we deliver faster, but we delivered a highly-intuitive user-experience that has significantly reduced the training time required for call-centre staff, and significantly reduced the time required to handle a number of typical call-centre tasks, due to the elimination of server-side roundtrip, and the more intuitive workflow offered by Rich Internet Applications.
