OVERVIEW OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES AT THE ILSB
The essentials of designing lightweight structures are taught in the course (Introduction to Lightweight Design), followed by a seminar, constructional and calculational tutorials as well as a practical course. The courses (Theory of Plasticity), Optimaldimensionierung (Optimal Design), Composite Engineering (Structural Design with Fiber Reinforced Polymers), and Sandwich Structures are devoted to special issues in the field of designing lightweight structures. A range of lectures, seminars, practical courses, and student projects serve to introduce students to the field of computer aided engineering (CAE), based on the course (Introduction to Finite Elements and Other Numerical Engineering Methods) and the associated tutorials. Advanced topics include Nichtlineare Finite Elemente Methoden (Nonlinear Finite Element Methods), Pre- and Postprocessing and (Modeling of Engineering Problems by the Finite Element Method), the latter presenting interested students with case studies of mathematical models used in practical engineering problems. A CASE FOR TEACHING ENGINEERING WITH CASES

Through case studies, the authors argue, students can learn basicprinciples
while gaining experience with engineering practice throughout their undergraduate years.
Using engineering case studies - accounts of actual engineering in practice - can bring much-needed realism to the classroom. In this article we treat the use of engineering cases as we would approach any significant engineering design problem: we define the problem; identify alternative ways to solve it; pick the best method; and finally, carry it out.
The Problem
The purpose of an undergraduate engineering education is to prepare people to practice engineering. Most of us agree on what engineering is, though we may argue about curricula and faculty roles. Faculty and others often use the term "good student" to mean a student with a high grade point average (GPA). The GPA, while a useful indicator of a student's academic ability, is not, however, as reliable at predicting engineering ability. During interview season students are often referred to as a college's product. To make a point, we will pursue this impersonal image a little further. When companies come to campus to buy a product, what do they want? What are they actually buying and what should they be buying? We have observed that industry considers, in order of importance

UC scientists get funds to teach
Grads, undergrads assist area schools
By Ragnar McCollum Published: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 Graduate students - and some undergraduates - interested in performing science experiments and teaching science are now able to get grants for doing just that. 
The National Science Foundation's Science Technology Engineering Math Talent Expansion Program coordinators are currently recruiting for Winter and Spring Quarters of next year. 
"National Science Foundation has these things they call GK-12 grants and STEP is one of those grants. Basically, the goal is to get scientists more involved in science and math education," said Debbie Kinne, Grant Coordinator for the STEP project. 
The program is part of a grant program the National Science Foundation has dubbed GK-12, or Graduate Fellows in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The NSF then places graduate or advanced undergraduate science, math and education students in local elementary and high schools.

The sheet itself can be written either in English or in the sudents' L1. You start with an extract from a catalogue describing a product and hand out a specification sheet to be filled in. At Savannah River, engineers will incorporate ZOOM Into Engineering into the annual Tech Day and teach-ins during National Engineers Week. Some 300 volunteers participate in the teach-ins and this year four schools have been selected to pilot-test ZOOM Into Engineering. Approximately 60 volunteers will facilitate activities in 30 classrooms. Volunteers received special training in January.

The Austin Engineers Week coalition will venture into its first-ever community events in conjunction with local PBS affiliate KLRU. The first event was January 26th at Highland Mall (click for photo) . More than 1,000 visitors worked with students from LBJ High School. Engineers joined the KLRU Kids Club Anniversary Celebration and hosted tables for Gumdrop Dome and Puff Mobile activities. On February 23, engineers will be work with KLRU and the Children's Courtyard to present six of the ZOOM activities. These will probably include Puff Mobile, Hoop Glider, Flinker, Polishing Pennies, Paper Tower and the eggless Egg Drop. Engineers will provide children's "passports" to be initialed at each activity. Completion of the activities will earn a glow in the dark Junior Engineer key tag. These activities are compatible for Brownie Try Its and Junior Girl Scout Badges and area Girl Scouts will attend. This is a project of IBM, 3M, Dell, URS and University of Texas students.

Teaching Activities ChE 312, Heat and Mass Transfer: This undergraduate core course is the second in a required three-course sequence focused on transport phenomena and separations (Note: As of Fall 2005, this course will be incorporated into two new courses, ChE 230 and ChE 330). The objective of this course is to identify the driving forces behind heat and mass transfer and to quantify the resistances that determine transport rates. These principles are then used to efficiently design various unit operations such as heat exchangers and multi-phase absorption towers.
ChE 401/601, Transport Phenomena: The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills needed to transcend between the molecular, microscopic, and macroscopic length scales found in transport phenomena. Utilizing shell balances and generalized equations of change, students apply microscopic conservation laws to solve a host of single and multi-dimensional momentum, energy, and mass transfer problems. Concepts learned in CHE 311 (Fluid Flow) and ChE 312 are reinforced from a new perspective while preparing students for advanced courses in the field. Particular interest is placed on identifying similarities between the three classes of transport phenomena and on developing a physical understanding of the governing mathematical equations.

Teaching Interests
In my undergraduate days, I have experienced how a good teacher can stimulate the desire of learning in students, and since then it was my dream to become one of those teachers who could bring the best in their students. To me this is the most challenging job that I wanted to pursue and therefore, I was exhilarated when I got the opportunity to work at National University of Singapore (NUS). I feel myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to both study and work at universities in different parts of the world (namely, India, United States, Netherlands and now in Singapore) and I believe that I am in a position to combine the best of all the places.

A little levity can go a long way in your classes.

Sound familiar? Many engineering professors no doubt feel this way. Yes, the work is hard, but we also believe that learning is more effective if students (and professors) have some fun during the process. An appropriate joke or pun eases tension. Comic strips on an overhead project can reinforce the explanation of a technical concept. Short brain teasers or creative games provide breaks in lectures. Perhaps even more effective, though, are more elaborate activities that can become events students long remember. For example, a name game is a great icebreaker to kick off a class. Have the students stand in a circle with you. Start by saying your name, then have the student next to you say your name and her name; the second student says your name, the first student's name, and his name, and so on until the circle is complete, at which point you try to say everyone's name. You, of course, will have the toughest job, but the students will greatly appreciate, and enjoy, your struggle. This works well with up to about 40 students. The game gets difficult quickly, so allow students to help each other. Develop a whodunnit that requires knowledge of course material to solve. For example, a hot pie is removed from the oven and placed on a counter to cool; 15 minutes later a large piece is missing. Five students have been seen walking into and out of the kitchen, with each there long enough to be the culprit. - By Linda Creighton Schools are broadening their coursework to teach students the environmental consequences of the products they'll create. Starting the day with a glass of orange juice is routine, but for many first-year engineering students at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., it just never tastes the same after their first semester. That's because every one of the 1,250 freshmen get their first taste of "green engineering" and insights into the environmental responsibilities of engineers in a required introductory course that explores the step-by-step production of America's favorite breakfast drink. "We have the chance in our course to touch every Virginia Tech student who graduates with an engineering degree," says Jean Kampe, assistant professor in the division of engineering fundamentals. "We give them an awareness of green even if they avoid courses that deal with it in their discipline." In the three decades since the first Earth Day, the industrial culture and engineering educators have broadened efforts to incorporate sustainable approaches to manufacturing. Environmental concerns have been added to engineering curriculum, and schools across the country have devised different approaches to prepare their graduates for work in an increasingly competitive global economy.
