Homework Help: Science: Physics: Lasers
by Emily McPherson LASER stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In 1917 Albert Einstein calculated the conditions necessary for stimulated emission; but, it was only much later, in 1960, that the first visible LASER was demonstrated by T. Maiman. However, a MASER, a similar device that emitted energy in the microwave region was the first to be developed. Basic Concepts Normally when an electron gains energy there is a random time delay before it spontaneously emits the energy as light. Sometimes this emission is said to come from a 'forbidden transition' and the time delay is much longer, though still random. This is called Spontaneous emission. If during this waiting period the electron is hit by a photon of light the electron will instantly emit its energy. This is called Stimulated emission. An unusual feature of this is that the photon emitted will be traveling in the same direction as the original photon. For this process to be sustained the rate of stimulated emission needs to be greater than that of spontaneous emission. This state is called a Population Inversion, where there are more excited electrons than unexcited electrons. However, with just two energy state involved this will never be achieved. Three or four energy levels are generally used.

Tantalum ... Zirconium Aluminum Is the most abundant metal element in the Earth’s crust. Bauxite is the main source of aluminum. Aluminum is used in the United States in packaging, transportation, and building. Guinea and Australia have about one-half of the world’s reserves. Other countries with major reserves include Brazil, Jamaica, and India. More information
Bauxite A general term for a rock composed of hydrated aluminum oxides. It is the main ore of alumina to make aluminum. Also used in the production of synthetic corundum and aluminous refractories.
Antimony A native element, antimony metal is extracted from stibnite and other minerals. Antimony is used as a hardening alloy for lead, especially storage batteries and cable sheaths, also used in bearing metal, type metal, solder, collapsible tubes and foil, sheet and pipes, and semiconductor technology. More information
Stibnite (the main ore of Antimony) The sample in the photo contains 71.8 percent antimony and 28.2 percent sulfur. It is the most important ore for antimony. Stibnite is used for metal antifriction alloys, metal type, shot, batteries, in the manufacture of fireworks. Antimony salts are used in the rubber and textile industries, in medicine, and glassmaking.

Health
To keep healthy, try eating something red, something green and something yellow or orange each day. (That's fruit and vegetables, not sweets!) Funky facts Every year in Britain we eat 560 million bacon butties. The world's number one food crop is rice, which feeds half the people on the earth.
The word banan is Arabic for finger.
Food gives you energy. But you use more energy eating a stick of raw celery than you get from it.
Keeping healthy…
Children all over the world need the same things to keep them healthy: clean water, healthy food to eat, lots of exercise and people to take care of them.
Everyone needs a good mix of food:
*protein to build and repair our bodies *carbohydrates to give us our main source of energy *vitamins and minerals from fruit and vegetables to help our bodies work properly *calcium from milk and dairy foods for strong bones and teeth *and a small amount of fat and sugar to help food taste nice!
