EHS Success Story Close this window Science Teachers Explore Environmental Issues Teachers from across the United States are better equipped to teach environmental science, thanks to a program that gives them new tools and ideas they can use in the classroom. In July 2004, three teachers sponsored by Duke Energy were among those attending the Keystone Science School in Silverthorne, Colo., in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. They participated in the Key Issues Institute: Bringing Environmental Issues to the Classroom an intensive week of training that equips teachers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to explore current environmental issues with their students. In a setting that combines classroom learning with outdoor exploration, teachers learn the steps of investigating an environmental issue from start to finish. First, they study a local issue together and develop solutions. They then apply the same inquiry process to concerns they've identified in their own communities. When they leave the institute, they're ready to help their students study local environmental issues using the Key Issues framework.
