    Environment 2010 Strategy
Nine serious environmental issues need to be dealt with if New Zealand is to justify its claim to be a "clean green" country.
These issues and the goals the Government wants to achieve, are outlined in the Environment 2010 Strategy released in October 1994.
New Zealand's Highest Priority Environmental Issues
    1. Protecting Indigenous Habitats and Biological Diversity
    Issues and Examples
90 percent of our wetlands have been drained or degraded; lowland forest areas have been reduced to 15 percent of their pre-Maori extent; only 10 percent of the tall tussock grassland that existed in 1840 still remains.
Half of our endemic bird species have become extinct since people first came to New Zealand. About 500 species of animals and plants are now threatened.
Goal To protect indigenous habitats and to maintain biological diversity, by protecting representative examples of all indigenous ecosystems and by maintaining and enhancing the net total area of New Zealand's remaining indigenous forests and enhancing the quality of other remaining indigenous vegetation.
    2. Managing Pests, Weeds and Diseases

China tackles environmental issues
August 5, 1999 Web posted at: 10:22 a.m. EDT (1422 GMT) BEIJING (CNN) Over the past decade, the Chinese people have made extraordinary economic strides tens of millions of people have escaped tremendous poverty. But that growth has come at a price air and water pollution that is killing and sickening people as well as cutting productivity. The Chinese government is in a precarious position: it can't stop the newfound progress but realizes that as energy consumption skyrockets, things will only get worse. Correspondent Marsha Walton reports on some efforts by non-governmental organizations to use technology to ease China's environmental growing pains.

ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: This unit is written for the seventh grade students at Arsenal Middle School. Arsenal is an urban school in Pittsburgh, PA. We currently are a pilot school for the High Performance Schools. It is the goal of this program to teach children that decisions they make affect the Earth. Currently the program focuses on chemicals used in the building, this unit will focus on choices made in energy consumption affecting the planet. Now that Pennsylvanians can choose their energy supplier this will empower students to make knowledgeable choices when the time comes. Seventh grade students will explore the transportation crisis, how do we travel in a vehicle in an economic and friendly manner.
ABSTRACT: This unit is designed to fit the needs of all elementary children. Many times when one thinks of science they have a vision of vigorous high level activities. This unit will not only challenge the highest level student but also bring success to the lowest level student. Integrated in this unit are all the disciplines of education. It especially focuses on Language Arts and Technology, therefore, this unit will incorporate standards in science, communications and mathematics.

The SRT Project's Environment Work
From its beginning in 1970, environmental issues have been the most consistent activity of the Society Religion and Technology Project. Starting from a major study on the wider impact of North Sea Oil and Gas, SRT has been one Europe's pioneering organisations in raising the importance of environmental issues. From the outset, it has sought to develop a balanced and well-informed view of the issues. It has never adopted a specifically "green" agenda, although it has often found much common ground with secular environmental organisations. A priority has always been to engage with both sides of issues, and be a forum for exchange and debate. It has also played a major role in the churches, from its early work with the World Council of Churches to present involvement with the European Ecumenical Commission for Church and Society and the Conference of European Churches. In June 2002, SRT appointed

       March 2000 Turkey: Environmental Issues
Introduction

Turkey's economic emergence has brought with it fears of increased environmental degradation. As Turkey's economy experienced high levels of growth in the mid-1990s, the country's boom in industrial production resulted in higher levels of pollution and greater risks to the country's environment. With domestic energy consumption on the rise, Turkey has been forced to import more oil and gas, and the resultant increase in oil tanker traffic in the Black Sea and Bosporus Straits has increased environmental threats there. With Turkey now a formal candidate for membership in the European Union, Turkey's environmental record will come under heavy scrutiny. In 1983, Turkey promulgated the country's overarching "Environmental Law," and a national Ministry of Environment was created in 1991. Turkey is building an extensive network of hydroelectric energy sources in the southeast part of the country, and cleaner-burning natural gas is moving to replace coal in power generation. The importance of strong environmental protection measures, as well as the fragility of Turkey's environment, was driven home recently by catastrophe that struck the Tisza and Danube rivers in southeast Europe. After a reservoir wall at a gold mine in Romania collapsed, cyanide-tainted water was dumped into the Tisza River, and the toxic spill killed thousands of fish in Hungary as it flowed downstream into the Danube. Although the spill was supposed to be diluted by the time it reached the Black Sea, and it was not expected to cause any damage there or in the Marmara Sea, Turkey took no chances, taking water samples in the

"Contemporary American culture, founded on the original material wealth of the continent, on its timber, ores, and furs, has become a culture that devours the earth. ... There are two schools of thought on how to rectify this high rate of consumption, which most Western thinkers agree is unsustainable and likely wrongheaded if not disastrous. First, there are technical approaches. No matter how sophisticated or innovative these may be, they finally seem only clever or artful adjustments, not solutions. Secondly, we can consider a change in attitude toward nature, adopting a fundamentally different way of thinking about it than we have previously had, perhaps ever had as human beings. The insight of aboriginal peoples are of inestimable value here in rethinking our relationships with the natural world; but the solution to our plight is likely to be something no other culture has ever thought of." - Barry Lopez, 'The Passing Wisdom of Birds', in Crossing Open Ground The Gaia Hypothesis - Shaping the environment by life itself

Wind Energy: Environmental and Acceptance Issues The most important environmental impacts of wind energy are positive: by displacing fossil fuels, the use of wind helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and global warming , and to reduce air pollution and acid rain Still, wind energy is not without some impacts and acceptance issues of its own. Birds can be killed in collisions with wind turbines, turbines produce some noise. Some people find wind equipment visually unattractive or unacceptable for other reasons. Wind Energy Weekly articles on these and other environmental and acceptance issues are collected here.

Primary energy sources are sources that are naturally available on the earth. They can be renewable, meaning that they are recurring or continuous, or they can be non-renewable. Examples of renewable primary energy sources include geothermal, hydropower and solar. Nonrenewable primary energy sources include natural gas, oil, coal and uranium. Secondary energy sources are products of human technology, the most common of these energy sources is electricity.
Our current energy consumption in the United States (from 1998 statistics) is: Renewable Nonrenewable Used for Percent of total Biomass X heating, electricity, transportation
