Environmental Issues and Mitigation
Current hydropower technology, while essentially emission-free, can have undesirable environmental effects , such as fish injury and mortality from passage through turbines, as well as detrimental effects on the quality of downstream water. A variety of mitigation techniques are now being used to address these environmental issues, and environmentally friendly turbines are under development. Fish Passage
Fish populations can be impacted if fish cannot migrate upstream past impoundment dams to spawning grounds or if they cannot migrate downstream to the ocean. Upstream fish passage can be aided using fish ladders or elevators , or by trapping and hauling the fish upstream by truck. Downstream fish passage is aided by diverting fish from turbine intakes using screens or racks or even underwater lights and sounds , and by maintaining a minimum spill flow past the turbine. Water Quality and Flow
Hydropower plants can cause low dissolved oxygen levels in the water, a problem that is harmful to riparian habitats and is addressed using various aeration techniques. Maintaining

Welcome to ETE
Gradually, ETE has expanded and currently it has become a group of about 18 researchers. The working group formally consists of three subdivisions: Energy, Transport and Environment. The general aim of ETE is to apply state of the art economic theory to current policy issues at the Flemish, Belgian and European level. An important asset of ETE is its extensive portfolio of numerical partial and general equilibrium models for the assessment of transport, energy and environmental policies. ETE is a part of the which is the research division of the Department of Economics of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) . It is also one of the founders of the spin-off transport consultancy and of the Energy Institute (E.I.)

Environmental Issues to Consider with Geothermal Heat Pumps
In addition, GHPs have no outside condensing units like conventional air conditioners, so GHPs help reduce noise pollution both inside and outside your home or business. Before you purchase an open-loop system, you will want to be sure your system supplier/installer has fully investigated your site's hydrology, so you can avoid potential problems such as aquifer depletion and groundwater contamination. Antifreeze fluids circulated through closed-loop systems generally pose little to no environmental hazard. The links below provide more information on some of the environmental issues to help you determine if a geothermal heat pump is right for you:

Solar energy technologies, paired with energy conservation, have the potential to meet a large portion of future US energy needs
The United States faces serious energy shortages in the near future. High energy consumption and the ever-increasing US population will force residents to confront the critical problem of dwindling domestic fossil energy supplies. With only 4.7% of the world's population, the United States consumes approximately 25% of the total fossil fuel used each year throughout the world. The United States now imports about one half of its oil (25% of total fossil fuel) at an annual cost of approximately $65 billion (USBC 1992a). Current US dependence on foreign oil has important economic costs (Gibbons and Blair 1991) and portends future negative effects on national security and the economy. Domestic fossil fuel reserves are being rapidly depleted, and it would be a major drain on the economy to import 100% of US oil. Within a decade or two US residents will be forced to turn to renewable energy for some of their energy needs. Proven US oil reserves are projected to be exhausted in 10 to 15 years depending on consumption patterns (DOE 1991a, Matare 1989, Pimentel et al. 1994, Worldwatch Institute 1992), and natural gas reserves are expected to last slightly longer. In contrast, coal reserves have been projected to last approximately 100 years, based on current use and available extraction processes (Matare 1989).

For background see the Eurasia Insight archive Samira Aliyeva lives in the Bayil district, near the Caspian Sea’s 20th field, one of the oldest oil fields on the Caspian shore and an area considered one of the most polluted in the region. "We know that living here is not healthy, and may be the pollution is the reason for our diseases. But we can do nothing," said Aliyeva. A lack of confidence in the independence of Azerbaijan’s judiciary discourages many local citizens from using the legal system to redress their complaints. Instead, residents in Binagady, Surakhani and other oil-producing districts of the Apsheron Peninsula try to keep their children away from the polluted lakes. "During Soviet times we had no right to complain and got accustomed to this environment," said Badam Aliyeva, who lives in Surakhani. "Sometimes we even enjoy the colored shine on the lake, but it is difficult to stand this smell." Cleaning up the pollution is a daunting proposition from a financial standpoint. Based on international practice, an estimated $1 million would be needed to restore every 2.5 acres of polluted land, Mustafayev said. Overall, there are between 18,000-37,000 acres in need of an environmental cleanup on the Apsheron Peninsula.

Graduate Study in Global Environments Students can pursue an interest in global environmental issues through seminars, tutorials and individual research projects. To date, climate change has been the most popular of the global environments issue for graduate study at CEEP, but other areas of interest include international trade and environment, globalization, and biodiversity protection. Global environmental issues have also been examined in the context of sustainable development and the implications for ecological justice. Political Economy of the Environment
Technology, Environment and Society Seminar
The interrelationships of technology, environment and society are the focus of this doctoral seminar. Over the last two centuries, forces of industrialization and urbanization have transformed economic, social and political life, and the natural environment. A range of theories is examined which seek to explain and assess these transformations, including those of Marx, Mumford, Ellul, and Shiva. The aim of the seminar is to foster the development of critical perspectives on social and environmental transformation.

Home Ecostruct Current Projects The Wintles ... Contact us In times of increasing environmental awareness it is logical that thought should be given to many of the practices which form a part of everyday life, in order to ascertain their effect on the environment, and identify any areas in which improvements can be made. The building industry is one such area, and currently much thought is being given to its future direction in the light of changing demands. ECOSTRUCT i s a building company aiming to promote the concepts of sustainable development and environmental awareness within the construction industry. It is our intention to prove that ecologically friendly construction techniques can be used on a commercial basis to produce mainstream houses. Our members have operated as small builders in the Shropshire area for some ten years, initially specialising in Barn Conversions (see photographs), probably the ultimate 'eco-friendly', Brownfield development. People wishing to purchase Barn Conversions in the area may wish to consider our developments at The Wintles, Bishops Castle. Each site has dwellings constructed using heavy Post and Beam frames similar to many local barns.
