Landscaping for Energy Efficiency
Summary: This fact sheet will give you some landscaping tips that will help you save energy and money year-round, including climate and site considerations, design and planning, and tree and shrub selection. To view illustrations, you can download the PDF version ( PDF 590 KB ) of this fact sheet ( Download Acrobat Reader ). See Related Links below for another publication and resources on related topics, which aren't included in the PDF version. Are you looking for cost-effective yet eye-pleasing ways to lower your energy bills? Planting trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, and hedges could be the answer. In fact, landscaping may be your best long-term investment for reducing heating and cooling costs, while also bringing other improvements to your community. A well-designed landscape will:
  • Cut your summer and winter energy costs dramatically. Protect your home from winter wind and summer sun. Reduce consumption of water, pesticides, and fuel for landscaping and lawn maintenance. Help control noise and air pollution.

http://www.swenergy.org/
T he Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) is promoting greater energy efficiency in a six-state region that includes:
  • Arizona Colorado Nevada New Mexico Utah Wyoming
This is a high growth region where energy efficiency efforts have been lagging compared to other regions, air pollution is a growing concern, and many new power plants are under development. Increasing the energy efficiency of homes, appliances, vehicles, commercial buildings, and industries in the region will:
  • save consumers and businesses money, reduce the need for costly and controversial new power plants, increase the reliability of energy supply systems, reduce dependence on oil and natural gas imports, reduce emissions of air pollutants that are harming public health, and reduce emissions of pollutants that are causing global warming.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
  • SWEEP was very successful in advancing legislation that promotes energy efficiency in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. For details, please see our 2005 Legislative Activities Report SWEEP has just released a new research report entitled Lighting Systems in Southwestern Homes: Problems and Opportunities . This report examines the technology issues surrounding incandescent versus fluorescent lighting and discusses new emerging lighting technologies. SWEEP has collaborated with the etc Group in Salt Lake City to produce the Energy Efficiency Guide for Utah Businesses , a web-based information resource that will assist Utah businesses in reducing their use of energy and lowering their energy bills.

Fighting for Clean Power Since 1990
The Clean Power Campaign is a non-profit organization of environmental and public interest groups, renewable energy providers, green energy marketers and energy efficiency technology companies. Our organization was founded in 1990 in Sacramento to promote increased electric system reliance on sustainable use of energy resources. In the area of energy, we focus on policies to increase renewable energy, encourage conservation and energy efficiency and make the most sustainable use of conventional power sources such as natural gas. We have expanded the focus of our work over the course of the last decade to include combating global warming, reducing petroleum dependence and expanding the availability of clean transportation solutions. We have worked on a broad range of legislative and regulatory initiatives in these areas.
The Clean Power Campaign receives its funding exclusively from environmentalists and private sources interested in clean energy solutions.
