Advancement

As one of the largest sponsors of research and development for the Nation, DOE supports thousands of research projects annually. Through our collections and services, we make the results of the Department's research available to scientists, researchers, and engineers in the DOE community and beyond; as well as academia, the international science community, and science attentive citizens. In addition to DOE-funded research, we also provide research information of interest to the Department in a wide range of scientific disciplines through partnerships with other federal agencies and international organizations. OSTI's Innovations in Scientific Knowledge and Advancement (ISKA) provides enhancements and improvements to transform our collections and services. ISKA is a strategic initiative to accelerate the diffusion of knowledge and advance science.

Welcome! Explore this site for information about the Human Genome Project (1990-2003). C ompleted in 2003, the Human Genome Project (HGP) was a 13-year project coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. During the early years of the HGP, the Wellcome Trust (U.K.) became a major partner; additional contributions came from Japan, France, Germany, China, and others. See our history page for more information. Project goals were to
  • identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA,
  • determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA,
  • store this information in databases,
  • improve tools for data analysis,
  • transfer related technologies to the private sector, and
  • address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project.

Receive news via our RSS feed DOE's Building Energy Codes Program is an information resource on national model energy codes. We work with other government agencies, state and local jurisdictions, national code organizations, and industry to promote stronger building energy codes and help states adopt, implement, and enforce those codes. The Program recognizes that energy codes maximize energy efficiency only when they are fully embraced by users and supported through education, implementation, and enforcement.
