"Healing and Teaching: Three Forms of AlternativeHealing and their Implications for Teaching"

Energy Healing This approach to healing is based on the view that a special energy moves through all thingsa life energy that is the creative impetus for the universe, for all matter, and for the moment to moment feelings of each human being. This energy moves in pulsating rhythms that make up the seasons, the stages of the life cycle, the developmental phases of growth, the tidal rhythms of breath, the drumbeat of the heart, and the vibratory dance of the smallest particles inside each cell. Seen in terms of energy, the body consists of
  • energy centers (chakras),
  • energy pathways (meridians), and
  • energy fields (auras).

According to this school of thought, when energy circulates freely, people are healthy, happy, in touch with themselves, in direct energy-level communication with one another, and in tune with the universe. This energy has been called many names"magnetism" in the early 19th century by Mesmer. The Yogic name for it is "prana." In Taoism and acupuncture, it is known by the Chinese term "chi" or "qi" (Japanese "ki"). Wilhelm Reich called it "orgone."
Each theory of healing has an explanation for the nature of human difficulty and disease. In this theory, for a multitude of reasons, life-energy readily becomes blocked in human beings. The channels through which it flows can be stopped up, weakening the energy in one part of the body, building it to excessive levels in another.

NEED makes teaching and learning about energy exciting, They participate inNEED activities and field trips to energy sites such as nuclear power plants
http://www.need.org/info.htm

2004-2005 Annual Report
(1.6mb PDF)
NEED Is On A Mission The mission of the NEED Project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs. 25 Years Of Energetic Education The NEED Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit education association that has been dedicated since 1980 to promoting a realistic understanding of the scientific, economic and environmental impacts of energy, so that students and teachers can make educated decisions. The NEED program includes innovative curriculum materials, professional development, evaluation tools, and recognition. NEED teaches the scientific concepts of energy and provides objective information about conventional and emerging energy sources – their use and impact on the environment, the economy and society. The program also educates students about energy efficiency and conservation, and provides tools to help educators, energy managers and consumers use energy wisely. The Importance Of Energy Education Energy is the vital link between everything that happens in this world, but there is no single or simple world vision. Energy choices and challenges will become increasingly complicated as the nation and the world balance the expanding need for energy supply with the importance of increasing energy efficiency and conservation. The world energy market grows daily, with new stakeholders, new limitations, new resources and new challenges. The energy world is ever-expanding, and NEED's goal is to prepare future leaders to make those difficult decisions, train educators to teach energy with a balanced perspective, and reach parents and community decision makers through energy outreach and education programs.

The Office of Science Teaching Activities (OSTA) was formed by the college of Arts and Sciences in 1983. The function of OSTA is to coordinate all activities related to science and mathematics teaching within the College of Arts and Sciences and to serve as the College's liaison with the College of Education. Over the years OSTA has initiated many science activities for K-12 teachers and students, and for undergraduate students at FSU. Most notable among these are:
An undergraduate major in Secondary Science and Mathematics Teaching within the College of Arts and Sciences. Students receive their degrees from the College and are certified to teach in two science and/or mathematics areas.
The Office of Science Teaching Activities is a National Network Center for Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) . GEMS is a resource for activity-based science and mathematics developed at the University of California at Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science. Through our GEMS Center professional development courses are offered for K-8 teachers to enhance the teaching and learning of science in the classrooms.

Through this new resource, students and teachers can learn how different solar installations in Massachusetts perform on a daily basis. You can also compare the systems and observe the impact of different weather conditions, seasons, and times of day. Up to now, many teachers have had difficulty finding outstanding materials about solar energy, wind power, fuel cells, and other renewable energy topics. When they came across a curriculum or collection of activities, they often spent long hours trying to assess whether the materials would be interesting and appropriate for their students. This guide short-circuits that laborious process by highlighting those educational materials that are aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. It describes and assesses the most useful materials available. The more than 120 materials described in this guide relate to the following frameworks and specific strands within those frameworks:

Classroom Activities
In addition to being a terrific toy, the Slinky is an excellent device for demonstrating various properties of physics. The Slinky, like all objects, tends to resist change in its motion. Because of this inertia , if placed at the top of stairs it stays at rest. At this point it has potential or stored energy . But once it is started down the stairs and gravity affects it, the potential energy is converted to the energy of motion or kinetic energy and the Slinky gracefully tumbles coil by coil down the stairs. Physical properties of the Slinky determine how quickly it moves under the influence of gravity . Although its movement may look simple, from a scientific point of view the motion is quite complex.
