Symptoms, Holistic Options for Treatment
This information courtesy of Herbal Remedies Endometriosis is a disease affecting women in their reproductive years. The tissue that lines the inside of the uterus and builds up and sheds each month in the menstrual cycle is called Endometrium tissue. In endometriosis, the endometrium tissue is found growing and sheding blood outside the uterus, in other areas of the body. This misplaced tissue develops into growths or lesions which respond to the menstrual cycle in the same way that the tissue of the uterine lining does. Possible Complications and Symptoms: These endometrial growths can cause pain, infertility, and other problems. Menstrual blood flows from the uterus and out of the body through the vagina, but the blood and tissue shed from endometrial growths has no way of leaving the body. This results in internal bleeding and inflammation of the surrounding areas, and formation of scar tissue. Endometrial growths are usually not malignant or cancerous. The cause of endometriosis is not known. It is known that excess estrogen can further irritate the disease and cause it to spread. Possible Treatments: Important Supplements Inositol and choline help the liver process estrogen, which at high levels is thought to stimulate endometriosis.

This procedure has been available since 1995 and has now been carried out on over 10,000 patients. Helium Thermal Ablation has proven to be a safe and effective way in the treating of endometriosis.
The generator unit (the Helica TC machine) is now in 97 hospitals throughout the UK. This means that while endometriosis is being diagnosed during a procedure called a diagnostic laparoscopy, the disease can then be treated in the early stages of development thereby avoiding further visits to the operating theatre The Treatment
Using keyhole surgery (Laparoscopy) the Consultant Gynaecologist can cauterise (ablate) the affected area, which may give instant pain relief to the patient. Endometriosis is sometimes found on or over some extremely sensitive organs. Helium Thermal Ablation can be used to treat these affected areas. New procedures

Endometriosis
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? The tissue that lines the inside of the uterus is called endometrial tissue. Endometriosis is a condition in which this tissue grows in places outside of the uterus. Endometriosis usually develops in the pelvis and abdomen in these locations: the ovaries, the outside surface of the uterus, the membranes and ligaments of the pelvis and lower abdomen, the fallopian tubes, and the spaces between the bladder, uterus and rectum. Less commonly, misplaced endometrial tissue grows in the wall of the rectum, bladder, intestines or appendix. Rarely, endometriosis develops in areas very far from the reproductive tract, such as the lung, arm, thigh and skin.

    General
description Adenomyosis is the presence of endometrial glands and supporting tissues in the muscle of the uterus where it would not occur normally. When the gland tissue grows during the menstrual cycle and then at menses tries to slough, the old tissue and blood cannot escape the uterine muscle and flow out of the cervix as part of normal menses. This trapping of the blood and tissue causes uterine pain in the form of monthly menstrual cramps. It also produces abnormal uterine bleeding when some of the blood finally escapes the muscle resulting in prolonged spotting. It more often occurs in the posterior wall of the uterus.
Is it common? The background incidence of adenomyosis in all women either with or without symptoms is not known precisely because only in recent years has MRI imaging been able to diagnose adenomyosis without doing a hysterectomy. In studies of chronic pelvic pain in which women had hysterectomies, the incidence of adenomyosis is about 15% to 25% ( ). It seems to be about the same incidence in hysterectomy specimens from women without pain as from women with pain so it is possible that this represents the background incidence.

    Endometriosis: Does It Affect You?
W hen I was first asked to write an article about endometriosis my response was a simple one, "sure, I’ll do it." As I began to gather research I thought to myself how quick and easy this was going to be. I already possessed a great deal of medical literature on the subject and I thought I could easily regurgitate a page full of statistics, case studies, and theories. While I was revising my second draft something occurred to me, I realized that my article had no human perspective at all, it was in fact, just cold recited statistics. This was absurd, I thought to myself. You see, I live with endometriosis everyday. So drafts one and two were quickly thrown into my recycle bin, in hopes that maybe I could help even one person to understand this debilitating condition. What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a hormonal and immune condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is found outside the uterus. It is usually found in the abdomen, fallopian tubes, ovaries, between the vagina and rectum, and the ligaments supporting the uterus. Endometrial growths may also be found in the bladder, bowel, cervix, and less commonly in places like the lungs or arms. Symptoms Diagnosis Diagnosing endometriosis, or "endo" as we refer to it, can be extremely difficult. The symptoms listed above can also be signs of a variety of other conditions from ovarian cysts to a pelvic infection. Endo was once falsely called the "career woman’s disease." We now know that it was titled this because working women generally had more resources to seek continuous medical care.

The growths are commonly referred to as "endometrial implants." Endometriosis affects 10% to 15% of women and is a chronic, sometimes painful condition that can lead to infertility. Causes of endometriosis are unknown. Diagnosis of endometriosis usually involves a laparoscopy , a complete medical history, a physical examination, and other tests. Treatment typically involves medication and/or surgery. Endometrial implants typically inset in other parts of the reproductive tract, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the inside lining of the abdominal cavity, and the outside surfaces of the uterus or intestines. They can also occur in other parts of the body, including the liver, legs, lungs, and rarely, the brain. The implants are not malignant (cancerous), but the disease may be progressive and

Treatment and Research Related to Endometriosis
Up to 20% of American women of childbearing age may have endometriosis, a condition which can cause severe pain or infertility. Endometrium is the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus. In women of childbearing age who are not pregnant, endometrium normally is shed each month as menstrual flow. Endometriosis is characterized by tissue that looks and acts like endometrium, but is located outside the uterus, usually in the abdominal cavity. This misplaced tissue reacts to the menstrual cycle the same way normal endometrium does. It breaks apart and begins to bleed at the end of each menstrual cycle. However, there is no place for blood to go. As a result, tissue around the area of endometriosis may become swollen and inflamed, producing scar tissue and lesions. Endometriosis is usually relieved by menopause, although estrogen-replacement therapy may cause the tissue to grow back.
    Treatments for Endometriosis
There is no absolute cure, since endometriosis can reoccur after treatment. However, treatment may alleviate symptoms and improve fertility. The course of treatment is largely dictated by whether the patient wants to reduce pain, become pregnant or both.

    What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a disease in which cells that look and act like the cells that line the uterus (endometrial cells) are found in other locations in the body, usually in the pelvis . These cells can attach to the ovaries or fallopian tubes ; the outer surface of the uterus, the bowels, or other abdominal organs; or, rarely, to other organs and structures in the body. The places where the cells attach are called implants, or lesions. Endometrial cells that are found outside the uterus respond to hormones released during the menstrual cycle in the same way as endometrial cells that are located in the uterus. At the beginning of the normal menstrual cycle, when the lining of the uterus is shed and menstrual bleeding begins, the sites of these abnormally located cells (implants) may swell and bleed.
