At the workshop "Basic Pathophysiology of Endometriosis" held in Washington in September 1991, a research paper was handed around that marked a surprising finding. It described a very high rate of endometriosis in rhesus monkeys that have been studied by the U.S. Air Force and National Aeronautics and Space Administration over many years to learn about the effects of radiation. The endometriosis developed spontaneously in 53 percent of the monkeys in the study group that received no radiation, the incidence of spontaneous endometriosis (endometriosis that developed on its own, not due to endometrium transplanted for research purposes) was 26 percent.

Additionally, of women who experience infertility or dysmenorrhea, this disease is a factor in half. Yet, the origin and management of endometriosis remains controversial and frustrating. As a pain syndrome, misconceptions are continually being challenged.
A number of theories have been proposed to explain the development of endometriosis. Among the most common are: *Retrograde passage of endometrial tissue through the fallopian tubes with implantation on pelvic organs. Regurgitation of menstrual tissue can explain the predominance of endometriotic lesion in the cul-de-sac, the uterosacrals, and ovaries. *Lymphatic or hematological spread of endometrial tissue to parts of the body distant from the uterus.

Help for Your Endometriosis
by Peter Eckhart, MD I am a medical doctor, and in my opinion, I have had great luck with helping endometriosis with our natural system. Patients that use our system claim that they have had better outcomes than conventional surgery or prescription medicines. Part one of our system consists of taking Natural Progesterone. John Lee, MD, an American Norwegian who practiced in California, used Natural Progesterone in his clinical practice as a natural remedy to treat endometriosis with great success for several decades. Part two of our system is to avoid chemicals that cause endometriosis. Prior to 1921, there were only twenty reports of endometriosis in the worldwide medical literature. Now, in the USA, 1 out of 20 women have endometriosis. Chemicals that mimic estrogen (xenoestrogens) seem to be the cause of endometriosis. There are 85,000 chemicals in use in the USA, and some of these chemicals have hormonal effects that provoke endometriosis.
Our 2 Part System
1. Avoid the chemicals in our daily lives that mimic estrogen.

Endometriosis and sexuality
July 9, 1999 Web posted at: 11:43 AM EDT (1543 GMT) In this story: A mysterious malady How do I know if I have endometriosis? How might endometriosis affect my sex life? What are the treatments and how might they affect my sex life? ... RELATEDS By Sandor Gardos, Ph.D. (WebMD) It is estimated that up to 10 million American women suffer from a chronic, painful condition known as endometriosis. This illness occurs when pieces of the normal lining of the uterus (the endometrium) "migrate" to other areas of the body most commonly, the pelvic region. Because the endometrium normally sheds during a woman's monthly menstrual cycle, internal bleeding, inflammation and pain usually result if this tissue locates itself in a part of the body that has no way of draining it. Although pain during or following intercourse is one of the most common reasons for women with this condition to see a doctor, the issue of how endometriosis affects sexuality is almost never discussed. This is especially troubling since almost all of the available treatments will also affect a woman's sexual functioning in one way or another.

The normal tissue lining the uterine cavity is called the endometrium. Endometriosis is a condition in which the presence of this endometrial tissue moves outside the uterus. The most common places for implantation are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and intestines, uterine wall, and the lining of the pelvis. In very rare cases it may be found in the lungs, surgical wounds (cesarean section scars), brain tissue and the vaginal wall.
The explanation on how this tissue moves outside the uterine cavity is under debate. It is thought that during menstruation, blood can regurgitate out of the fallopian tubes and into the abdominal cavity. This process is known as retrograde bleeding. How common is it?
The true incidence of Endometriosis is not really known, but it is thought that 10-15% of all women of reproductive age will develop Endometriosis and 25-35% of all infertile women have Endometriosis. The risk of this disease is seven times greater if a mother or sister have had the disease. back to top

Endometriosis
Conquering the Silent Invader
"When we had sex on our wedding night, instead of having an ultimate experience with my husband, sex was so painful I ended up in tears," Marilyn P. wrote to her Witsendo friends. "I thought something was wrong with me . . .that I was frigid or something. "When I went to the doctor, I told him I'd always had some pain with my periods but that my cramps were getting worse. "He did a pelvic exam and I screamed when he touched my left ovary. After doing an ultrasound examination, he told me that my left ovary was swollen to twice its normal size. He also felt small bumps behind my uterus. He recommended doing a laparoscopy to find out what was going on. "That's when I got the news: endometriosis at the ripe old age of twenty-three, and that I had probably had endometriosis as a teenager! What a way to start married life." What is it? Endometriosis is described as the presence of endometrial tissue in locations outside the endometrial (uterine) cavity. Endometriosis is commonly found in the cul-de-sac (behind the uterus), the rectovaginal septum (the tissue between the rectum and vagina), on the surface of the rectum, the fallopian tubes and ovaries, the uterosacral ligaments, the bladder, and the pelvic side wall. Generally endometriosis in the rectovaginal septum is more likely to deeply invade the underlying structures. Is endometriosis a genetic disease?

Endometriosis
What is endometriosis?
The name endometriosis comes from the word “endometrium.” This is the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus. Endometriosis occurs when this tissue grows outside the uterus. These are called implants. The female hormone estrogen causes these implants to grow, bleed and break down, causing pain and swelling. This may or may not happen at the same time as your period. Unlike the tissue shed by the uterus during your period, these implants outside the uterus have no way to leave the body. The implants become inflamed and swollen. The inflammation causes scar tissue around nearby organs that can interfere with their normal functioning and cause pain. Endometriosis is a common health problem in women. It generally appears between the ages of 15 and 50.

DEFINITION
Endometriosis is a disease in which endometrial glands and stroma implant and grow in areas outside the uterus (See Fig.1). The most common place to find implants is in the peritoneal cavity, but endometriotic lesions occasionally have been found in the pleural cavity, liver, kidney, gluteal muscles, bladder, and even in men. The anatomical location and inflammatory response to these lesions are believed to account for the symptoms and signs associated with endometriosis. Figure 1. Common locations of endometriosis within the pelvis and abdomen. (Reprinted by permission from the New England Journal of Medicine 2001. Olive DL, Pritts EA. Treatment of Endometriosis. Vol. 345:267) SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS The most common symptom for women who have endometriosis is that of cyclic pelvic pain, although many women with endometriosis may not have this complaint. The pain usually begins just before menses and continues throughout the duration of menstrual flow and typically includes dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dysuria, or dyschezia. The pain also may be perceived in musculoskeletal regions, such as the flank, low back, or thighs. The next most common symptom is that of infertility. It is apparent that women with moderate and severe disease can have fertility problems due to the mechanical blockage of sperm-egg union, either from adhesions or disruption of normal pelvic anatomy. Interestingly, women with minimal or mild disease also have decreased fertility outcomes when compared with those without clinical evidence of endometriosis. The exact causes remain elusive to date, but several postulated mechanisms will be addressed below.

  • Back to Women's Health Center The Basics of Endometriosis Endometriosis is a condition in which cells from the endometrium - or uterine lining - grow outside the uterus and adhere to other structures in the pelvis, most commonly the ovaries, bowel, fallopian tubes or bladder. It is a benign (noncancerous) condition. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), endometriosis is a common condition affecting 10 to 15 percent of reproductive-age women. It rarely causes symptoms following natural or surgical menopause. The most common symptoms of endometriosis are painful menstrual periods or non-cyclic pelvic pain. However, the type and intensity of symptoms vary greatly among women with endometriosis. Symptoms may be completely disabling or mild. Sometimes the condition is present and causes few to no symptoms. Chronic pelvic pain is common in women with endometriosis. Other symptoms may include:
    • diarrhea and painful bowel movements especially during menstruation painful intercourse abdominal tenderness severe cramping
Endometriosis with scarring that distorts the anatomy of the pelvic organs may impair fertility. When there is no distortion of the pelvic organs or blockage of the fallopian tubes, endometriosis is less likely to impair fertility.
