With today's technology, a root canal (endodontic therapy) can be a painless procedure, no more complicated than having a large filling. Our practice specializes in endodontic therapy and we are dedicated to making sure your experience with us is a positive one. Our goal, of course, is to ensure a successful outcome, and your comfort during the process is our number one priority. With patience, kindness and top technical skills, my staff and I are able to treat even the most apprehensive patients successfully. What is Endodontic Therapy?
A root canal is needed when tissue becomes diseased or damaged due to decay, deep fillings, trauma/fracture or periodontal disease. While some people experience pain or other symptoms of the damage, others may have no discomfort at all. Endodontists are trained in advanced nonsurgical and surgical skills to alleviate pain and eliminate potential sources of infection to save the damaged tooth. They remove the damaged tissue from inside the root canals of a tooth and replace it with a filling material. Not every tooth can be saved, but the chances of success are very good using today's techniques. What Can You Expect?

46. Root Canal Treatment, What Is It?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is probably the most maligned endodontic Therapy. Page 1 Where in a tooth is its nerve? Page 2
http://www.animated-teeth.com/root_canal/t1_root_canal.htm
root canal treatment / endodontic therapy
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is probably the most maligned of all dental procedures, but the reputation of pain typically associated with "having a root canal" is really not deserved . The majority of people who have undergone root canal treatment typically report that the process itself is no more involved than having a filling placed.
Our pages will describe for you the overall goals of root canal treatment the treatment's individual steps , and also what other dental work might be necessary for a tooth which has had its root canal treatment completed . We also discuss the costs associated with root canal treatment what role endodontists play in providing this type of therapy , and why root canal treatment can fail
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal therapy refers to the treatment of the inner aspects of a tooth, specifically that area inside a tooth originally occupied by the tooth's "pulp tissue".
Most people would probably refer to a tooth's pulp tissue as its "nerve". While a tooth's pulp tissue does contain nerve fibers it is also composed of arteries, veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue.
For the purposes of this discussion, so to use a term people seem to be most familiar with, we will use the terms "nerve" and "nerve tissue" to refer to a tooth's pulp tissue.

Advancements in Endodontic Surgery Treatment Objective of Endodontic Surgery Many dentistsl believe that the objective of endodontic surgery is to eliminate infected root apicies and/or periapical tissue. Often endodontic surgery is referred to incorrectly as an apicoectomy. Actually, apicoectomy by itself is seldom enough to resolve root canal failures. The purpose of an apicoecomy is only to allow us to read the root and examine the canals. To seal the canals, some form of retrofilling is usually necessary. Apicoectomy may be considered definite treatment, however, in cases of mechanical failure such as apical blockage or perforation. Such complications may result in failure of an otherwise perfectly obturated root canal system. Surgical removal of the untreated apical portion of the root will correct the problem. Apicoectomy is merely one step toward the final objective - the retroseal. Retroseal is the process that finally resolves most endodontic failures. Since the 1950s most clinicians have realized that virtually all failures result from leaking root canal systems. The often quoted Washington Study attributed root canal failures to apical percolation (63.46%), operator error (14.42%) root perforation (9.61%), calcified canals (3.85%), broken instrument (.96%), or case poor selection. Apicoectomy and retroseal can reverse all of these errors except improper case selection and some types of operator error. It should be emphasized that endodontic surgery is not to be used instead of conventional endodontics. Surgery is indicated when conventional techniques cannot be used.

http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00061.htm
Endodontic Anatomy and Diagnosis in the Veterinary Patient Kenneth Lyon United States INTRODUCTION Endodontics may be defined as the branch of dental science concerned with the study of form, function, health, and treatment of the dental pulp and periradicular region. Endodontic treatment includes any procedure designed to maintain the health of all, or part of, the pulp. When the pulp is diseased or injured, treatment is aimed at maintaining or restoring the health of the periradicular tissues, usually by root canal treatment, but occasionally in combination with endodontic surgery. Standard root canal therapy is more clearly described as conventional endodontics. Most modern endodontic treatment involves removal of the irreversibly damaged pulp followed by cleaning and shaping of the root canal space and subsequent filling, or obturation, with a semisolid material and a sealer. Shaping of the canal is done by hand or engine-driven instruments, the latter including sonically and ultrasonically powered files and handpieces with rotating, randomly vibrating, or reciprocating actions. Cleaning is done by irrigating the canal system with one of a number of solutions that may be antibacterial and have tissue-dissolving ability. Obturation is achieved with gutta-percha and a root canal sealer. The cleaning and shaping phase of endodontic treatment is regarded as the most important. When the canal is clean, it is important that microorganisms do not recontaminate the system. Because of the complex anatomy of the root canal system, complete disinfection is almost impossible to achieve. It is important, therefore, that any remaining microorganisms in the dentinal tubules are prevented from multiplying by the use of an antimicrobial dressing followed by three-dimensional filling. Recontamination from the oral cavity must be avoided and the importance of a good coronal seal cannot be overestimated.
