Using Print and CD-ROM Encyclopedias A good place to start to gather information on an unfamiliar topic is an encyclopedia. There are two encyclopedia formats available to you: print encyclopedias and CD-ROM encyclopedias.
Tips for Using Print Encyclopedias
  • Keep proper spelling of your topic in mind when looking for information. If you can't spell it, you won't find it easily.
  • Generate a list of keywords that are related to your topic. Include some general as well as more specific terms. These will be helpful if you are having difficulty finding your topic in the index.
  • Use the index volume to find all of the information related to your topic. Use all of your keywords . If you can't locate your topic in the index, it's probably not in that encyclopedia.
Tips for Using CD-ROM Encyclopedias
  • Again, spelling your topic correctly is the most important tip. In most programs, if you do not spell your words correctly, you will not find your topic.
  • Keywords are also important . Be sure to have a list of related terms (both general and specific) to use when keyword searching.
  • Once the program has started, look for direction words such as "

"Based on what many consider to be the best encyclopedia ever written: the eleventh edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, first published in 1911. At a time when many encyclopedias have capsulated and condensed important knowledge, the 11th edition is generally much more in-depth and thorough on it's topics. It is not uncommon for our entries to be 5 to 10 times the length of other encyclopedias...It contains over 40,000 articles written by over 1,500 authors within their various fields of expertise. What was particularly remarkable was that many of the entries were written by the most famous people of the age. Henry Ford, for example, wrote the article on mass production. As such, it was considered to represent the sum of human knowledge at the beginning of the 20th Century."

Britannica or Nupedia? The Future of Free Encyclopedias
    ... Columns
    By Larry Sanger
Wed Jul 25th, 2001 at 12:54:49 PM EST
Britannica recently announced that it was going to require payment to view anything beyond the first few paragraphs of their articles. It was predictable that it would do so, eventually, particularly after the technology stock bubble burst. "The economics of the all-free model has changed," said Britannica spokesman Tom Panelas says in the AP story. Gone are the halcyon days of free content. Au contraire that's only what Britannica wants you to think. The grandest days of free content have not yet begun. Britannica and other proprietary encyclopedias will be hopelessly obsolete within ten yearssmall, out-of-date, and generally irrelevantby comparison with Nupedia, Wikipedia, and the many other non-proprietary reference works that are being and will be developed. This is a dramatic claim, but an interesting and surprising case can be made for it. How open content projects can keep high quality encyclopedic content free It is now hackneyed, but still perfectly sound, to argue that good content online will always be free. Even a small number of producers of excellent content will satisfy most of the demand, due to the ease of Internet distribution. So the price of content will stay low, if the law of supply and demand is to be trusted. In other words, if someone charges others for premium content, users, not being stupid, will look elsewhere for comparable content. In all likelihood, they will find it, simply because the number of Internet content-producers is huge. An academic, a hobbyist, a journalist, or some other person will want to educate the public. Like everyone, they have a natural desire to communicate and teach.
