The next generation of online encyclopedias
From... Douglas Adams, creator of the H2g2 website based on his "Hitchhiker's Guide" books, hopes the site will become a portable, location-sensitive guide for handheld devices by Mark Frauenfelder (IDG) In 1978 Douglas Adams wrote a hit radio play for the BBC called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . Its title came from a gadget described in the story as "a sort of electronic book" that "tells you everything you need to know about anything." In today's techspeak it would be called a wireless PDA. The handy electronic guide was updated on the fly by a team of spacefaring researchers and had "supplanted the great Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom."

  • 1911 Encyclopedia (1911Encyclopedia.org)
"The LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia is based on what many consider to be the best encyclopedia ever written: the eleventh edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, first published in 1911. At a time when many encyclopedias have capsulated and condensed important knowledge, the 11th edition is generally much more in-depth and thorough on it's topics. It is not uncommon for our entries to be 5 to 10 times the length of other encyclopedias."
"The Eleventh Edition filled 29 volumes and contains over 44 million words. It contains over 40,000 articles written by over 1,500 authors within their various fields of expertise. What was particularly remarkable was that many of the entries were written by the most famous people of the age. Henry Ford, for example, wrote the article on mass production. As such, it was considered to represent the sum of human knowledge at the beginning of the 20th Century."
Editor's Note : This encyclopedia was published in 1911 and does not reflect changes or discoveries since then. 10-04

John Leech, the son of a Coffee House proprietor, was born in London on 29th August, 1817. He was educated at Charterhouse and at the age of sixteen he went to St. Bartholomew's to study medicine. Leech's teachers should became aware of Leech's superb anatomical drawings and began commissioning him to paint portraits.
Leech left medical school and tried to make a living from drawing and painting. His first known published work was a pamphlet called Etchings and Sketchings (1835) and included drawings of street characters such as cabmen, policemen, street musicians, etc. For the next few years he produced a series of humourous pamphlets including the Comic Latin Grammar The Fiddle-Faddle Fashion Book and the Children of Mobility . Although influenced by the work of James Gillray and George Cruikshank , Leech's humour was as one critic pointed out "less grotesque, less boisterous, less exaggerated, nearer to the truth and to ordinary experience."

    Introduction
This guide is intended as an introduction to reference sources at Perkins Library for the study of Russian literature. The emphasis is on recent English language materials, and the list is by no means comprehensive. Students should use the materials in this guide as a starting point for more in-depth research; almost all works included here contain excellent bibliographies of valuable publications in Russian, English, and other languages. Duke student access to information is not limited to holdings here on campus; materials not held by Perkins are often available from other university libraries through Inter-Library Loan. The University of North Carolina, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina State University catalogs are all directly accessible through the online catalog, and Duke students enjoy borrowing privileges at each of these libraries as well. In addition, information is increasingly available via the Internet and various document delivery services. Check with a reference librarian for suggestions on how best to access the materials you need. Part One of this guide lists research tools of use to students of all types of literature, including general dictionaries of literary terms, encyclopedias, and indices for book reviews and biographical information on authors.

    Joho the Blog
    An Entry from the Archives
Technorati's State of Blogs report Back to Blog ... The political power of cross references August 04, 2005 Encyclopedias and voice I'm reading Philipp Blom's Enlightening the World about the 18th Century French Encyclopedia put together by Diderot and D'Alembert, an amazing project. The passages from the Encyclopedia highlight one of the things I miss about Wikipedia: Style. The Encyclopedia entries are frequently witty, lively, highly-styled. Wikipedia's commitment to a neutral point of view tends to drive style out of the articles so they talk in a matter-of-fact, affectless, voiceless tone of voice. I guess that's the price we pay for Wikipedia's approximation of neutrality. Blom's book is largely about the Encyclopedia as a political tract into which Diderot smuggled anti-authoritarian messages. For example, its choice of topics put more emphasis on manufacturing and craft techniques than on aristocratic and theological concerns. Wikipedia, on the other hand, surfaces and removes smuggled messages. There's obviously good reason to do so, but it removes the double edge so conducive to great writing. Not a complaint. There are lots of places on the Web where you can get all the voice and opinionatedness you want but precious few where you can get what the Wikipedia gives us.
