The air sacs are unable to completely deflate (hyperinflation) and are therefore unable to fill with fresh air to ensure adequate oxygen supply to the body. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of emphysema. Tobacco smoke and other pollutants are thought to cause the release of chemicals from within the lungs that damage the walls of the air sacs. This damage becomes worse over time, affecting the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs. A naturally occurring substance in the lungs called alpha-1 antitrypsin may protect against this damage. People with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency are at an increased risk for this disease.

What is Emphysema? Emphysema is a condition in which there is over-inflation of structures in the lungs known as alveoli or air sacs. This over-inflation results from a breakdown of the walls of the alveoli, which causes a decrease in respiratory function and breathlessness. In emphysema, the lungs loose elasticity and are unable to fully expand and contract. This occurs because the air sacs cannot completely deflate, thus unable to fill with fresh air for adequate ventilation. Emphysema in children is usually caused by congenital abnormalities of the lung and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. In emphysema, the patient can breathe in but breating out is difficult and inefficient. The seriousness of emphysema varies greatly. Some persons never reach a stage of incapacity and go through life with relatively litte inconvenience, while in others, the disease worsens until final degeneration of the ability to breath occurs. Some patients with emphysema may also have black lung disease Symptoms?

Study finds removing part of lungs helps some emphysema patients
(AP) A risky surgery to remove part of the damaged lungs of emphysema patients appears to at least temporarily improve their ability to breathe, walk and lead more normal lives, a small study found. While a few thousand people with severe emphysema have had the operation and reported substantial improvement, Medicare and private insurers won't pay for it without proof it works better than standard medical care.

What is NETT? Return to Top What is Emphysema? Emphysema is a chronic lung condition that is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. Two million Americans are affected, largely those who are over age 50. With emphysema, breathing becomes difficult as the fine architecture of the lung is destroyed, leading to large holes in the lung, obstruction of the airways, trapping of air, and difficulty exchanging oxygen because of reduced elasticity of the lungs. In the United States, cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for emphysema. Emphysema costs more than $2.5 billion in annual health care expenses and causes or contributes to 100,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. Current medical treatments include smoking cessation for those who still smoke, exercise rehabilitation, oxygen therapy for those with low blood oxygen levels, supportive and preventive measures such as flu shots, pneumonia vaccine, medications such as bronchodilators to help open airways, prompt treatment of respiratory infections, and lung transplantation.

Emphysema
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Emphysema is a respiratory disease in which millions of the lungs' tiny air sacs (alveoli) stretch out of shape or rupture. As these thin, fragile air sacs become damaged or destroyed, the lungs lose their natural elasticity and are unable to empty easily. Emphysema is a progressive disease, which means it continues to get worse. As the condition progresses, the lungs also lose their ability to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Breathing becomes more difficult, and a person feels easily short of breath, like he or she is not getting enough air.

Casper attorney chose his own 'final exit' By MATTHEW VAN DUSEN Star-Tribune staff writer For years, Jim Fagan talked to friends and family about choosing the time and means of his own death. The Casper attorney believed both politically and personally in an individual's right to die, family members say, and on Wednesday morning, he took his own life.
"He believed that this was one of those things that people had the right to do," said Lita Fagan, Jim's ex-wife.

    Emphysema - an Introduction
E mphysema is a devastating disease caused by destruction of lung tissue. The usual cause is cigarette smoking. As tissue is destroyed in the lung, large airspaces or holes appear in the lung. The elastic properties of the lung are decreased and the airways narrow. This results in overinflation of the lung (lungs too large), large decreases in the patient's ability to move air in and out of the lungs, and decreases in the ability of oxygen to pass into the blood from the lungs. Emphysema, when severe, is as devastating and debilitating as cancer, severe heart failure or any other severe chronic disease. The most troublesome symptom is severe shortness of breath of even the most trivial effort. Patients may develop a whole host of secondary symptoms such as anxiety and depression, severe pulmonary infections, heart failure, and respiratory failure. Mortality is considerably increased in emphysema patients.
Traditional Treatment T raditional medical treatment consists of smoking cessation (the first step), medications to open the airways of the lungs as much as possible (bronchodilators), medications to decrease inflammation in the airways (steroids), oxygen, and antibiotics for pulmonary infections. Inhalers for the administration of bronchodilators and steroids are frequently used.

Chemicals in red wine could be the next treatment for chronic lung disease. Faquier County, Virginia Trawling the wine cellar for potential cures for human ailments in the same way we search tropical rainforests and oceans for useful drugs has yielded a new treatment for chronic lung disease.
Researchers from Imperial College, London have reported in the British Medical Journal that resveratrol, a component of red wine, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help treat a common type of lung disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an irreversible condition where the lungs progressively deteriorate, making it difficult to breathe. The term is used to describe the airflow obstruction that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The major risk factor for COPD is smoking and the only way to slow the disease is to stop smoking, use asthma medication and get some good old fashioned exercise.
Now researchers have found that resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant found in the skins of red fruits such as grapes, may suppress the disease.
