62. TITANIC CLOSE-UP- Rose's Dressing Gown Bodice
It is most likely hand lace. It has a look of the older Flanders lace I questioned whether the embroidery was applied or hand worked onto the costume.

TITANIC CLOSE-UP THE COSTUMES THAT MADE THE MOVIE Rose's Dressing Gown Bodice Closeup All photos on this web page are courtesy of Sense and Sensibility and Paramount Pictures (Paramount Theme Parks).
The bodice is what most of people view in the film "Titanic". Upon close observation, notice some features of this gown that you probably view on the silver screen. First, the gown does have the characteristic silhouette of the period, an empire waist. The waistline arrives beneath the bust. A two-inch wide matching silk ribbon is underneath the waistline seam. The only appearance of the ribbon is in this front bodice view in a 2 1/2" to 3" span on each side (shown in the above example halfway between her elbow and wrist). Another interesting feature of this bodice view is the split sleeves. The separation of the sleeve begins at the shoulder seam of the bodice. This would make what would normally be the top of the sleeve cap open to the edge of the armhole. It would be safe to conclude that the armhole must have been bound to prevent exposure of the raw edges. The sleeve is slightly gathered into the armhole. The sleeve's fabric is pin tucked seven parallel times to the center split. The pin tucking occurs twice from the front view. Once from the joining location at the shoulder seam and again at the 4 o'clock position on the armhole. Pin tucking of type was very common during this period of fashion.

History and Context
In March 2003 the Constance Howard Resource and Research Centre in Textiles opened for the first time to the public. The Centre was awarded a Resource Enhancement grant from the then Arts and Humanities Research Board 2002-2005 (renamed AHRC on April 1st 2005) and is supported by Goldsmiths College, University of London. It has attracted widespread interest from a range of artists, designers, researchers, Friends and museum curators. The Centre is dedicated to the research and study of textiles within a broader context of visual and material culture. The value of textiles as a primary source of cultural knowledge and experience is increasingly being recognised. Textiles are part of our everyday life and embody a complex set of histories, inviting a range of speculations about their wider cultural meaning and social interpretation. The Centre provides a distinctive resource for multi-faceted research and from many different perspectives. Goldsmiths students, academic staff, researchers, Friends and members of the public can use the Centre for the purposes of their own research needs. The first records from the Centre are now available in two taster collections, the Material Collection and the Slide Collection.

On Easter Sunday, hundreds of mothers and grandmothers will ooh and aah as their offspring don dainty bubble suits, dresses, slips, hair bows, lacy socks and frilly diaper covers for church. DAILY Photo by John Godbey
After all, they've spent weeks locating, trying on and purchasing new outfits for the youngsters, a tradition continued from their own childhood Easter dress-up days. "My mother did the heirloom sewing for my daughter's dresses," said Shirey McBride, owner of Surprises Galore on Second Avenue Southeast. But the retired educator knows many young mothers don't have time to make fancy dresses, so she carries a variety of styles that look handmade, with smocking, tatting, crocheting and other touches. "Easter is the parents' day, and parents get to pick everything about it," said Rebecca Bibb. "Other Sundays can be casual, but they definitely dress the children up for Easter."

Embroidery and lace
The best time i have is when i am sitting with a piece of embroidery for a costume, or when i sit at my lace pillow and make a piece of lace for a costume project i am making.
Often i find patterns from old silk fabrics and copy them to a border for embroidery. I make the embroidery with silk floss thread gold and silver gimps for outline and small seaquins to spangle the whole image. I use chainstitching because it is very suitable, and it is very easy. Lace patterns have survived and are also easy to copy. Lately i have started to make Chantilly lace and it is worked in silk thread.
A big project i made was a sackdress to be used for a Madame de Pompadour hairstyle. I embroidered the stomacher and the panels of the overskirt and a border at the underskirt.
Here is the beadembroidery for my new project a robe a l'anglaise. The leafpattern i took from an 18th. century silk fabric.
This is an embroidery sampler worked in chainstitches.
Here is the Chantilly lace i am making for the dress. It is made in pure silkthread.

Collecting Vintage Lace
Minor Lace Techniques/Types 2
By Pauline Weston Thomas for Fashion-Era.com
Collecting Vintage Lace
Minor Lace Techniques
These are not so minor as the name suggests and are the laces many of us are familiar with typically found decorating old clothes and vintage goods.
Whitework
There are many types of whitework, but 3 main methods are usual, including openwork, cutwork and classic whitework.
  • Openwork draws and pulls threads. Norwegian hardanger comes in this category. Cutwork involves cutting out fabric shapes from the background and then neatening the edges in a decorative manner. Broderie Anglaise and Italian Reticella are both cutwork methods of whitework. Classic whitework uses white embroidery stitching of various depths to create soft and darker shadows. This is often down on exceptionally fine cottons such as fine linen, batiste, muslin, organdie or on nets. Typical classic whitework includes Irish Carrickmacross, Scottish Ayrshire which uses pulled threads with embroidery, Dresden and Chikan a floral variety of patterning from India (Lucknow)
