... Home General information: Embroidery Think of the word "embroidery" what comes to mind? Crewel, needlepoint, smocking, Harhanger? The list could go on and on ... Embroidery is defined as the embellishment of fabric with needlework. In the realm of needlework, there are many types of hand stitching and literally hundreds of different stitches. Though some types of embroidery may seem intimidating at first, keep in mind most intricate stitches are combinations and variations of a few basic ones. Then, simply changing the fabric and application of a stitch a new technique, a different look. With so many different techniques to express your creativity using embroidery why not take some time to expand your horizons by learning a new stitch or technique? Begin a sampler of new stitches. As you perfect them, embellish a blouse or home decor project. If you're adventurous, try some pulled thread or cut work. Remember those basic stitches go a long way! Ribbon Embroidery is another very old art form. Simple in technique, it utilizes a needle to take a narrow ribbon through fabric creating many stitches, including some familiar embroidery stitches. While not typically as exact in the placement of the stitches as other forms of needlework, ribbon embroidery can be used to embellish cross-stitch, quilting, plastic canvas and needlepoint designs.

Algerian Eye Stitch
If you are interested in viewing part of a sampler that uses this stitch an image of it worked in hand dyed pearl thread on a linen foundation fabric it can be found here Algerian eye stitch also goes by the names of Star stitch and Star eyelet stitch. This is a stitch often found on canvas needlework, pulled work embroidery and forms of counted thread work. Worked on even weave embroidery fabric, it is made up of stitches arranged in a square. Work this stitch with the fabric held under tension in an embroiderers hoop or on a needlework frame. Refer to the diagram and work each straight stitch into the center hole. With each stitch pull the thread slightly so that the fabric distorts slightly, as it this tensioning action that creates the holes in the center of each stitch. If you want to neaten or emphasise the central hole you can do so with the end of a knitting needle. Gently poke the end of the knitting needle into the whole to widen it a little. It is very easy to build up interesting design motifs and patterns using arrangements of Algerian eye stitch. This needlework stitch can also be built up row upon row to create interesting border patterns on houshold items and garment. You often encounter this stitch in pulled and drawn thread needlework and worked in combination with

Embroidery is an ancient variety of decorative needlework in which designs and pictures are created by stitching strands of some material on to a layer of another material. Most embroidery uses thread or wool stitched onto a woven fabric, but the stitches could be executed in, for example, wire or leather strands, and embroidery can be worked onto many materials. Non- woven traditional materials include leather and felt , but modern textile artists embroider on many non-traditional materials such as plastic sheeting. Often, specific embroidery stitches are used.

She is certified through the Valentine Museum and teaches at National and Regional seminars as well as local guilds throughout the United States. Photography by John Backman
Maggie Backman demonstrates Rozashi technique.
The Ro weave of the scrim is unique. It is woven with three threads twisted and crossed with the warp threads to establish a small hole, which is the basis for the stitching technique that will cover the silk canvas. The scrim-like canvas has 37-40 threads to an inch horizontally and the small hole established by the weave enables the embroiderer to execute the surface design much easier than if the scrim were evenly woven. The three horizontal threads are called "dan" and only eleven of these dan are counted vertically per inch, thus making the canvas three times as high as it is wide. Because of the unevenly woven Ro, Rozashi stitches are vertical and lineal in nature. Counted thread stitches, similar to gobelin, brick, and Florentine, have been naturally employed for use on this unique canvas. If horizontal stitches are desired, the Ro is then fastened to the frame horizontally rather than vertically.

Byline: Annette Joyce Embroidery is a matter of putting thread to fabric to create a design that satisfies the needs of the consumer. It can be as simple as a name stitched across the top of a shirt pocket or as elaborate as a three-dimensional vase of flowers. Regardless of the complexity, in the end, the look of the design is determined by the various choices made by the embroiderer. When you break commercial embroidery down to the basics, there are four distinct components - machine, design, fabric and thread. Each one of these components plays an important role in the end product. Alter any one of them and you change, sometimes drastically, the look of your finished embroidery. Let's take a look at how each of these elements affects your final results.

Essays The Patterns: 1. A line drawing, the exact size for this design. 2. Charts for any type of counted work. This includes canvas embroidery. The color on the chart is simply there to create visual divisions in the work and should not be construed as the actual hues that should be used. Also included is a symbol chart for those who prefer working in this manner. The Parameters: You are not limited to any size ground. You are not limited to any medium or technique. This includes but is not limited to: ribbon floss, ribbon, any type or size of thread or yarn, beads, applique, wool grounds, Hardanger, reticella, cutwork, plain embroidery, free-hand machine embroidery. You can duplicate any technique already featured. You may use color. However, if you are going to do plain needlepoint or cross stitch, color should not be the sole criteria. If you are not going to try the white-on-white challenge, then do something other than color to make this stand out beyond simple cross stitches or half crosses on canvas. THE CHALLENGE: The original purpose of this "exercise" was to produce a multitude of techniques in white-on-white using the same pattern and approximate size. The size of the line drawing should be kept, within reason, no matter the medium/technique. That might prove difficult on canvas or lower count fabric.

    Introduction
The term 'embroidered bookbinding' usually describes a book bound in textile, decorated with a design made for the book and worked in coloured and metallic threads on both covers. The cloth was embroidered separately before it was glued or stitched to the boards of a ready bound book; embroidered covers do not form part of the binding structure. The majority of embroidered bindings were produced by professional needleworkers.
    Brief History of Embroidered Bookbindings
In the 16th and 17th centuries embroidery came into fashion in England, and embroidered bookbindings were most popular under the Tudors and Stuarts. Embroidered bindings were never mass-produced but always made for individuals by request.
