Besides everyday life in the family unit, the video shows mating rituals, play fighting (to hone skills for fighting predators and to declare supremacy over other elephants), and the elephants enjoying a mud bath. In play fighting, elephants use their tusks and their agile trunks. With 150,000 muscle units, the versatile trunk is used to caress, smell, dust, mud splash, drink and eat. In her lifelong study of elephants, Poole has discovered that humans can only pick up one-third of elephant vocalization. With sophisticated recording equipment, Poole found that elephants are capable of making 20 low frequency sounds, each of which has its own meaning. One of Poole's greatest concerns has been the decimation of elephant herds by poachers. The numbers are staggering. From a population of 165,000 in the early 1970s to only 20,000 by 1989, the elephant was on the verge of extinction. For four years, Poole worked with the Kenya Wildlife Service to declare an all-out war against poaching. As a result of the service's efforts, there was an international ban on ivory products, and the elephant population began to increase. As the elephants return to their former habitats, conflicts with farmers, now using the land for cattle grazing, are occurring with greater frequency. Poole, who has left the wildlife service to resume her research, remains devoted to the cause of elephant conservation and creating public awareness about the ivory trade. She maintains that the more people learn about elephants and how similar they are to humans, the greater the chance that humans will become involved in the preservation of the elephant species.

A domestic elephant is one that has been captured from the wild and been tamed to live and work with a mahout (elephant keeper).Asian elephants are incredibly adaptable to differing climates, for example they can live both in a hot humid rain forest environment( like that of Indonesia) or they can also live happily in cold mountainous, and heavily forested regions like that of "Hema Lie" (an island off the coast of India). The most important thing to the survival of the elephants is their habitat,as it is this that gives them their source of food. It is imperative that the areas where they live are not disturbed by humans. To try and enforce this, the Thai government has set up two projects :

To follow up on yesterday's post about wayward environmentalism , do you know what many consider to be the number one environmental threat in Africa? If you guessed "elephants" (because they're in the title?) you're right! Since internaltional trade in ivory was restricted at the beck of environmentalists in (I think) 1999, elephant populations have soared , endangering humans, trees, and everything else. HARARE, Zimbabwe, January 17, 2001 (ENS) - The Zimbabwean government has renewed its demand for legal ivory sales following what authorities say is the swelling of its elephant population. After a single permit under international law issued in 1999, further legal sales are prohibited.

Their destiny was to spend the rest of their lives in zoos in China and Japan. Thanks to the efforts of Born Free, and our supporters, the elephants were granted a reprieve. On the 26th July 2004 five of the captured elephants were released into Gunung Rara forest reserve, as reported in the Malaysian newspaper New Straits Times (below). At this time (August 2004) the remaining six animals are being held at the proposed Lok Kawi zoo (not yet open to the public) in Sabah. These unfortunate individuals are not scheduled for release, and Born Free will continue to campaign for their return to the wild. However, we still see the prohibition of the export to China and the release of five members of the herd as very positive moves by the Sabah government and significant campaign successes for Born Free. EXTRAS For Immediate Release Date: April 10, 2003 Groups File Suit to Stop Wild African Elephant Import by U.S. Zoos Action Comes One Week after Federal Agency Questions Validity of Import Permits Washington, DC . . . Aiming to stop what would be the first import of wild elephants to American Zoo Association (AZA) accredited zoos in the U.S. in more than a decade, a coalition of wildlife conservation and animal protection organizations today filed suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the U.S. Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The suit aims to overturn federal permits issued by the FWS to the Zoological Society of San Diego, CA, and the Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, in FL, authorizing the import of eleven 12-year old wild African elephants from Swaziland. "The decision to allow this import is highly precedential and will encourage an international market for wild elephants to be used in exhibitions and entertainment, thus undermining protection for this threatened species," said Adam Roberts of Born Free USA. "In addition, permitting the import of these wild animals into this country poses potentially grave health and safety risks to the American public, particularly in regard to the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, which African elephants are known to carry."

    BANGKOK (http://www.nando.net):
Villagers in southern Thailand are rallying round to protect wild
elephants threatened by poachers and deforestation after several died, a report said Sunday. More than 100 villagers in Prachuab Kiri Khan province have set up a club to keep watch on elephants that roam a local forest reserve after at least half a dozen died, including two by poisoning. The Kui Buri Forest and Elephants Club will also educate communities about the behavior patterns of the estimated 200 elephants that live in nearby jungle areas. "Our most urgent task is to keep the elephants away from crops. The fastest solutions are electric fences and growing wild bananas their favourite wild food," Sun Muakmuang, a village headman and chief of the new club, told the Bangkok Post.

    Source: Reuters

KUI BURI NATIONAL PARK, Thailand, Feb 22 (Reuters) - A female
elephant herd commander emerges from dense jungle on the edge of an
open valley in the shadow of Thailand's southern mountains.
She waits patiently and makes a thorough survey of the terrain until
sunset before signalling to the rest of the herd to come out of hiding and move to large piles of food that soldiers have left for them. Seven wild elephants eat the prepared food nervously, while metres (yards) away from them, animal researchers hidden in the bushes monitor their movements. This is Thailand's Kui Buri National Park and the site of a unique experiment by Thai environmentalists to help elephants and farmers live in peace in a region that has seen generations of conflict between human beings and pachyderms. Encouraged by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, officials are conducting a long-term project to try to keep elephants inside protected areas of parkland and away from the vast pineapple plantations that have sprung up in recent years to employ many local residents.
