One is usually loaded with slide film (Kodak Ektachrome 400ASA or Fujichrome 400ASA) and the other with normal positive film (Kodak Gold 200ASA). I also use a SONY Digital Video Camera Recorder DCR-TRV6E, which can double up both as a video camera and digital still camera.

They are endangered in North American zoos, too. That's why the 2001 birth of Kandula , the result of artificial insemination, was such a triumph. This young male represents a major effort by the National Zoo to develop a herd of breeding Asian elephants, build a new Zoo habitat on Asia Trail for these majestic animals, and help to save populations both in zoos and in the wild through science and conservation initiatives. Kandula Is Growing Fast: In May, Kandula weighed 3,100 pounds. His tusks continue to grow and are visible inside his mouth. How does this three-year-old elephant like to have fun?

Elephants are amazing. They are beautiful, yet scarey. Majestic, yet their survival is in jeopardy. I am fascinated with elephants for a range of reasons. They are supposed to have exceptional powers of memory. They have had profound effects on culture, nowhere more so than in India where Ganesh, a popular Hindu god, takes the form of half elephant, half human. They are huge, and move so gracefully. Their form is unique. Like many people, I collect elephants. Not the real ones, thoughmy back yard isn't quite large enough. Besides, I'm not all that happy about having elephants locked up in enclosures. Here is a collection of links for those of you who share my fascination with this wonderful creature.

They do this by identifying sources of conflict, developing strategies for resolution and offering educational programs which encourage a harmonious relationship between elephants and people. They believe that extensive participation and commitment by the communities is a requirement for success.

Remember that these exercises are just that . . . exercises. They are meant to help you get a better feel for what it means to examine population growth. What do you think is really going on with elephants in the wild? In reality, both African and Indian elephants are declining in the wild. The Indian elephant is considered an endangered species, while the African elephant is listed as threatened. What does this tell you about their population growth rate? ( Answer Interestingly, elephant populations found on wildlife preserves can thrive so well that overpopulation of elephants in the reserves does occur. This means that the elephants' numbers must be thinned so they don't destroy the wildlife preserve meant to protect them. If overpopulation in wildlife preserves occurs what does this tell you about the population growth rate in the preserves? ( Answer And what does this tell you about growth rate outside of wildlife preserves? ( Answer What kinds of mortality factors might be important outside of wildlife preserves? (

    Calls in the Wild
Midday sun scorches the plains of northern Namibia, and a female elephant just coming into estrus is making a racket. With a rumble loud enough to rival a jackhammer, she broadcasts her availability for mating. But gusty winds and turbulence created by heat shimmering through the atmosphere tend to break up the sound waves she generates, so her signal carries little more than half a mile. The odds are slim that a mature male in his own period of reproductive readiness will be close enough to hear her call.
Hours pass. Dusk settles over the flat sand veld. Winds calm, and air near the ground becomes cooler than the warm air above it, effectively creating a channel for sound. Now the low-frequency end of the eager female's cries can carry six miles (10 kilometers) in all directions, reaching the ears of elephants spread over a range of more than 110 square miles (280 square kilometers). The chance that a tall, strong mate will come swaggering her way is now a pretty sure thing.
Garstang became curious about whether elephants waste energy bellowing against the wind, or whether they take advantage of daily atmospheric changes that can boost bass tones like the woofers in stereo speakers. To find answers, he assembled a team of researchers and headed to Etosha National Park in Namibia, home to a healthy and growing elephant population. Hills and forests aren't part of Etosha's savanna habitat, so Garstang knew that weather, rather than terrain, would be the most significant environmental factor affecting the elephants' lowest pitched communications.

Mali is a beautiful, landlocked desert country in North West Africa. Perhaps best known for its rich cultural diversity, Mali is also home to the northernmost herd of African elephants. The only elephants in the arid Sahel, this herd is also unique because of its annual migration – circumscribing an area of over 24,000 square kilometers, the herd has the longest recorded migration route of any elephants.
The The nomadic pastoralists who live in this extended area – primarily the Tuareg and the Fulani (Puhl) tribes – have coexisted peacefully and in close proximity with these animals for centuries. They graze and herd their cattle and goats in the same areas, and use the same waterholes. More than just tolerated, the elephants have been integral part of the local culture.
