to survive in Thailand
KHAO-ANG RUE-NI, Thailand—These are classic, coordinated ambushes: a roadblock is set, and when vehicles stop, the raiders sweep out of the thick jungle to strike their targets. But rather than guerrillas, the attackers in Thailand’s Khao-Ang Rue-Ni wildlife sanctuary are savvy—and desperate—elephants, who hold up trucks loaded with sugar cane, tapioca and fruit. For most of the year, the estimated 200 elephants live quietly in the dense forests of Khao-Ang Rue-Ni, near the Cambodian border in eastern Thailand. But with the onset of dry season, when water and food supplies shrink, they move to the road to stage their heists and drink from a nearby reservoir, said the sanctuary’s chief, Yuo Senatham. Conveniently for the elephants, this is also the time when hundreds of trucks rumble along the 15-kilometer road, laden with newly harvested tapioca and sugar cane—particular pachyderm favorites.

Swahili Name: Tembo or ndovu Scientific Name: Loxodonta africana Size: Up to 11 feet Weight: tons (7,000 13,200 lb) Lifespan: 60 to 70 years Habitat: Dense forest to open plains Diet: Herbivorous Gestation: About 22 months Predators: Humans The African elephant and the Asian elephant are the only two surviving species of what was in prehistoric times a diverse and populous group of large mammals. Fossil records suggest that the elephant has some unlikely distant relatives, namely the small, rodentlike hyrax and the ungainly aquatic dugong. They all are thought to have evolved from a common stock related to ungulates. In East Africa many well-preserved fossil remains of earlier elephants have aided scientists in dating the archaeological sites of prehistoric man.
The African elephant is the largest living land mammal, one of the most impressive animals on earth.

Elephant management requires determining the appropriate level of sustainable off take, and that management requires funding. With increased value of any resource, comes a responsibility, and more likely an imperative need for increased level of management. But conservation cannot be perpetually performed in a financial vacuum. In a world beset by many demands for land, if a species is to survive, a use which can be sustained both economically and ecologically, provides independence that will favor survival in the most tumultuous of times. http://www.savewildelephants.com/
For the sake of elephants in the wild and in captivity, zoos must phase out their elephant exhibits, abandon failed breeding programs and future capture plans, and strive to provide the elephants currently in captivity with a more humane existence.
Zoos rob elephants of their most basic needs, including social companionship and adequate space to exercise. Zoos keep elephants in unnaturally small groups and routinely shuffle elephants between facilities with callous disregard for the special bonds between elephant friends. Lack of exercise and long hours standing on hard surfaces are major contributors to foot infections and arthritis, the leading causes of death among captive elephants. According to a study commissioned by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), elephants in zoos have significantly shorter lifespans than their wild counterparts.
Zoos operate under the misleading veil of conservation and education when, in reality, these proud and sensitive animals are kept merely as tourist draws to boost sagging profits. Captive breeding will never contribute to the survival of the species because elephants breed poorly in captivity and the offspring who do survive can never be released into the wild. And as far as education goes, keeping elephants in captivity teaches children that it is acceptable to deprive these animals of all that is important to them for the sake of our amusement.

31. Sunday Times RSPCA Chief Seeks Freedom For Big Cats
Jasper Gerard. The RSPCA's official position, which has merely raised concerns about the treatment of elephants in zoos, is at odds with Jackie Ballard's aim that all large wild animals be removed from zoos and returned to their natural environment. If we are seen as campaigning, we will get more young people and more money.

http://www.savewildelephants.com/capture.asp
Despite a public outcry, the San Diego Zoo and Lowry Park Zoo captured and imported 11 African elephants from their homeland.
In a desperate attempt to make this crime against nature more palatable to the public, the zoos claim that they imported the elephants because the park wanted to kill them. But the truth is that the elephants never faced death because PETA offered to assist in translocating them to at least three other free-roaming areas in Africa that had agreed to accept the elephants. Oscar winning actress Goldie Hawn loves everything about India, but is especially captivated by Asian elephants. Seven years ago she travelled to India and saw a very special wild elephant which stayed in her heart and mind. Now she returns to discover more about these endangered animals, and to try to find her special elephant again.
Goldie begins with an offering to the elephant-god Ganesh for good luck, and then moves to meet with Asian elephant advocate, Mark Shand, and his elephant, Tara. Overcoming her fear of getting close to the gentle giant, Goldie is thrilled to find herself bathing her and learning to ride her.
