OHM- The Early Gurus of Electronic Music
INTERVIEWS AND ESSAYS BY JASON GROSS (April 2000) The end result is OHM- The Early Gurus of Electronic Music on Ellipsis Arts (available April 24th). Along with Thomas and the Ellipsis crew, we worked long and hard to contact all of the living composers to get quotes about their pieces as well as find archival essays and photos to go along with comments from artists influenced by these composers. Gruelling as it was, I hope that the end result will be worthwhile to anyone with an interest in electronic music. I myself learned a lot from the experience and found myself with a treasure trove of material that we were not able to include in the accompanying booklet. Rather than let this historic material gather dust in my drawers, I thought I'd like to share this important material with the online world. As with OHM , I hope that this will become an invitation to you to explore more of this rich and astounding field. OHM- THE EARLY GURUS OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center
Co-founders Professors Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening The first American electronic collaborative academic effort focusing on electronic music, experimenting with electronic instruments and encouraging other artists to do the same. "Music in the Tape Medium"
by Vladimir Ussachevsky
Julliard Review Vol. 1, no. 2, Spring 1959
I think of the composer as standing foremost at the central convergence of these avenues, and his pure inventiveness- when given the technological conditions organized to suit his requirements and the indigenous requirements of the medium itself- will be stimulated by and will feed upon all information yielded. It is our hope that the forthcoming Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, to be located on the Columbia University campus, will provide some of the answers by giving a certain number of interested composers an opportunity to pursue exploration in a congenial technological environment according to the singularities of their tastes, imagination and esthetic point of view. New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band For the past week my head has been filled with fragments of old Dixieland music.. Basin Street Blues, Mississippi Mud, other tunes whose names I can't remember. So tonight I gave in to temptation and pulled out some old vinyl to listen to... my god.
I don't know if everyone here knows what we've lost. New Orleans is where it all started; where jazz was born. And jazz gave us rock, and rock gave us most of the form... View the entire article News Announcing the release of the

Wed, 27 Apr 2005 Roger Reynolds at LOC now up
The Library of Congress's site featuring the music of Roger Reynolds is an outstanding example of what such an organization can do. The site shows the depth of the Library's holding in a particular are, covering everything from Reynolds' music to photographs of the composer. Reynolds has a close working relationship with the LOC; I only wish I had heard the performance of JUSTICE while I was still living in DC. As a composer of sorts myself, I find the interview with Reynolds particularly interesting. He's an interesting character. Originally an engineer, he didn't really come to music until he was 14. His approach is an interesting combination of intuition and formalism; he uses tone rows, but what to do next is guided by the row, not dictated. As he says:

PIGNA PEOPLE : the Roman Empire Marches on! - posted 05/09/2005
Some do, other’s talk and Pigna records’ Marco Passarani, Francesco de Bellis and Mario Pierro are firmly placed in the former. Pigna is the dancefloor label from the Finalfrontier collective based in Rome. Originally established by Marco Passarani in 1993 the nucleus now remains tightly hooked around the three Pigna producers. Now Pigna prepare to expand the Roman Empire once again with ‚Let Em Talk’, an album featuring 6 brand new tracks from the Roman based collective and 6 bona fide dancefloors classics from recent Pigna releases. Pigna are three foot soldiers ready to take the world’s dancefloors by storm as their sound of twisted chicago house, classic techno, disco, funk and of course a healthy dose of Italo hit our hearts, mind and feet. As the Pigna collective would say, it’s time to let the music do the talking...

  • The strange triumph of electronic music It may not be on the radio, but it's the most influential and unifying force in pop music today. By Andrew John Ignatius Vontz In 1997, at the height of the so-called big beat invasion, I walked into a Foot Locker store in Beverly Hills to buy a new pair of shoes. I may have been looking for some Air Max 95s. At some point, house music came thundering over the in-store sound system and strobes began to flash. I dropped whatever sneaker I was holding and waited for smoke to billow into the room while everyone pumped their fists in the air and danced. Instead, everyone kept shopping.

Another pop-tastic tune from Charlie.Listen to that great build up towards the end. This sounds like its been processed by The Human League and developed by Japan and printed onto electro-matt paper. Boo Hoo by Vic TWENTY
A perfect example of retro synthpop, this track heralds a welcome return to Electromancer by Vic Twenty, one of the earliest artists on the site, after a brief absence. It's great to have you back and it's fantastic to hear some new material!! Skin Twin by GARYCEE
Absolutely gorgeous lush and melancholy piano and synth feast. GARYCEE is the master of the sparse arrangement. Everything perfectly placed to pluck the emotions. I loved it. It's going on my iPod straight away. Rock the Party! by DIGITANZ
Its monotonous, its robotic. But its funky in a Kraftwerk-meets-a tumble dryer way. Check out those wicked beats and cut up rhythms, its strangely hypnotic. This is just the right length too,no 8 minute sleepathon here. Ancient Spirits by Antibody Music
A gorgeous piece of super-smooth laid back trance. This music was the perfect tonic for my `morning after the night before` lethargy!

In the mid-90s, the advent of the term electronica does turn to electronic music and its various subjects, the discourse reveals a range of assumptions about technology and musicianship, ownership and community, social change and cultural continuity, to name a few. This course aims to illuminate the many ways that electronic technologies have shaped popular music production and consumption over the last fifty years, shaping selves (and often others) in the process. Assignments: [**Six times over the course of the semester, using FL Studio music-making software (or the software/hardware of one's choice) and drawing from the lecture-demonstrations, the listening selections, and the stylistic templates and samples provided, students will create tracks in the musical styles we study.] Required Texts:
