24. Risk Watch: Make Time For Safety
NFPA has developed electrical lesson plans for PreK/Kindergarten to grade 7/8 for the purpose of teaching kids of all ages to be safe around electricity.
http://www.nfpa.org/riskwatch/teach_electricalsafety.html
Fast Fact:
Electrical distribution equipment (i.e., wiring, switches, outlets, cords and plugs, fuse and circuit breaker boxes, lighting fixtures and lamps) was the third leading cause of home fires and the second leading cause of fire deaths in the United States between 1994 and 1998. NFPA has developed electrical lesson plans for Pre-K/Kindergarten to grade 7/8 for the purpose of teaching kids of all ages to be safe around electricity. These comprehensive lessons will fit in perfectly with teachers already using Risk Watch: Unintentional Injuries in the classroom. Technical review for the lessons was done by The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFi) in addition to experts at NFPA. Each lesson plan includes an easy to download PDF of the lesson and all support materials. NFPA would like to thank ESFi for their support. All lesson plans and support materials are available in PDF format to download and print.

Lesson Plans for "TVA: Electricity for All"
Contributed by:
Stanlee Brimberg, a teacher at the Bank Street School for Children in New York. He has contributed articles and consulting services to several teachers' and children's publications and online teaching-resource projects. Lesson 1: Political Cartoons and the TVA Estimated class time: Varies according to grade, ability, and the amount of homework preparation and follow-up students can do; suitable for junior high through high school levels Description: This lesson is organized into three sections:
  • Understanding political cartoons (one to three periods). Students learn to understand and appreciate political cartoons as a medium of journalistic expression by looking at several contemporary political cartoons.
  • Political cartoons and the TVA (one to two periods). Students apply these skills to cartoons that appeared during the TVA years and come to see that political cartoons provide insight into different sides of contemporary and historical issues.
  • Enrichment activities (one to three periods). Five additional research and art activities are provided for class or individual enrichment.

Each lesson contains hands-on or interactive activities as well as explanations of the science and engineering. Biomedical - Design A Paraplegic Saddle - 10 Pages You and your classmates are biomedical engineers assigned to develop a new equestrian saddle for a paraplegic rider. Without the use of their legs, how does the rider balance on top of the horse?
Biomedical - Biomechanics Of Joints - 7 Pages In this activity, you will build a model of a human arm and shoulder. The model will demonstrate that these body parts act like different types of mechanical joints and that muscles "pull" but do not "push". You will also examine the range of motion of your knee, elbow and wrist.
Biomedical and Mechanical - Design A Running Shoe For A Triathlete - 9 Pages You and your classmates are sports engineers assigned to develop a new triathlete shoe. Current concerns with existing equipment include a) speed of foot entry into the shoe b) ease of lacing the shoe. There is also a question regarding durability. Does a running shoe for a triathlete need to be durable? You and your team will consider several elements of engineering design to develop concepts for a new shoe.
Chemical - Chromatography - 6 Pages Chromatography is used by crime laboratories to identify clues such as blood, ink, or other substances found at a crime scene. Chromatograms of these clues are compared against chromatograms of known substances for identification. In this experiment you get to be the detective! Can you identify the 12 color colored markers?

But could we ever really run out of electricity? Through this CoNECT Conservation Co-NECT has designed different lesson plans for each age group.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Overview
Did you ever wonder what would happen if we ran out of all the electricity in the world? Think of all the things that wouldn't work: lights, computers, medical equipment, refridgerators. You can probably think of a thousand other things that wouldn't be possible without electricity. But could we ever really run out of electricity? Through this Co-NECT Conservation Project, we hope to explore this question while we also look at ways to conserve energy to insure that we never run out.
Check out our Results so far!
Are you interested in sharing your results with students from around the country? Figure out the total KWH's of electricity that you use in one week and submit that data to the Co-NECT database. Then see how you compare with other schools from around the nation. Before you submit your data, make sure you have the following information available for your school:
  • Total KWHs of electricity used in a given week.
  • Total square meters of your school
  • Average outdoor temperature for the week when you measured KWHs
  • Whether your school has electrical heat.
