Michael Ewing's Site - Teaching About Me Writing Research Teaching ... X-Men Electricity and Magnetism The Electiric and Magnetism activities are designed to introduce students to the concepts and relationships among electricity, magnetism, electromagnetism, and the electromagnetic spectrum. The activities are a mixture of heavy, but light-hearted, readings and laboratory activities based and require equipment such as batteries, alligator clip wires, bar magnetics, and multimeters. The activities are presented in their planned order - carrying the student from the atomic properties of charges to non-moving charge with static electricity and static discharge to moving electricity with current, power, and circuits. Magnetism starts with a comparison to electric charge, explains magnetic fields and continues into electrical and magnetic field interaction, and wraps up with electricomagnetic waves. A video that showed a good summary of the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum was also added to the list. Activities are presented in Acrobat PDF format. The activity title will link to the PDF file and open it in a new window when you click on it - you may also right click on a title and save the file to your computer.

April 2001 – Electricity Dear Teacher, With summer on the way, why not spark your students' interest in electricity ? Help them understand what causes those crackling summer lightning storms. But no reason to stop there. Electricity causes static, allows us to communicate, and provides enormous amounts of power. We have lessons about all of these topics for intermediate, middle, and secondary students. You will also find related Web resources and literature tie-ins For the month of April, the PearsonAtSchool suggested titles below.

Engineers!..... Don't they drive trains? Do your students think this? If so, surprise!!! Engineers do lots of cool stuff! For example, did you know electrical and computer engineers design compact disc players and DVD's? Engineers create lots of cool gadgets. On this Web site you can find out what type of engineer builds roller coasters, water slides, snowboards or fighter jets/planes. You can also find fun activities, experiments and projects all related to engineering. Awesome Web site! Back to Top Constructor

Engineering schools are slowly responding to the need for grads with both technical and public policy know-how. - BY LINDA CREIGHTON There are a number of excellent graduate-degree programs integrating engineering and public policy, including those at George Washington University, Princeton, Georgia Tech, MIT, Berkeley, and Stanford. Penn State and Cornell offer a large number of undergraduate courses and programs in science, technology, and society. Only one university in the country, Carnegie Mellon, offers a formal undergraduate program that deals with engineering's role in politics. Begun in 1971, the school's Engineering and Public Policy program has graduated almost 500 students. These graduates have the analytical skills imparted by the traditional engineering fields coupled with those from economics and social and policy analysis. Trained to solve problems at the intersection of technology and society, these engineers will meet environmental, computer, and communication problems from a unique perspective.
But now McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., has introduced a new course called The Engineer's Role in Public Policy. The idea is to help prepare undergraduate engineering students for the variety of societal problems awaiting them in their jobs.

Science Outreach
Learning science is fun. Doing science is a privilege afforded to few. One of the best things to do with these gifts is to share with others, and no group is as enthusiastic, curious, and excited about the universe as children. Interacting with kids is a special experience for anyone. Beyond any help we offer with presenting scientific content, the fact that the young (if possible) person standing in their very own classroom and talking with them is a scientist is an important step in demystifying the concept of science for many kids. Two of my favorite outreach anecdotes illustrate this:
  • Now that I've seen you all doing this I feel I can do it too!
  • During a visit to a Lumberton, NC elementary school, a second grade student standing in line at the cafeteria looked, puzzled, at Karen Daniels inviting the obvious discussion of what scientists might look like.
Several outreach projects in the Duke Physics Department provide opportunities for such activities. As an organization, the department can contribute to science education by making its resources available to teachers. These include the equipment available in our wonderful demonstration facility; tours of our research laboratories; the use of the Duke Teaching Observatory and, most valuably, the time, energy, and enthusiasm of the members of the department.

Teaching Nursery Rhymes to Pre-readers GO TO THE TEACHER'S FORUM

There are a lot of different ways to approach teaching nursery rhymes to children. Many of the children probably know most of the rhymes, but some will not. As an introduction, you can first read (or sing) a rhyme to the children, while showing them the pictures. The children could then sing along with you. Word Families
Many of the nursery rhymes contain common word families. You can use these rhymes to teach these letter combinations (and how they are spelled and spoken), having the students sound them out after memorizing the rhyme. For a list of some common word families and a list of the word families contained in some nursery rhymes, click here . You can study one word family a week. Students can use the Little Explorers Picture Dictionary to look for more words that belong to word families.

    Coordinated Control
Nuclear Transplants Uncovering a Signal Quiz
As you learned in "Nerves of Steel" Functional electrical stimulation, or FES, for short is a technique that uses external electrical signals to stimulate muscle contraction. Electrodes are implanted into target muscle groups. When impulses are discharged into these sites, the muscles behave as if they had been stimulated by neurons.
In the past, scientists had hoped that FES might offer a bank of controlled movements to paraplegics. These days, however, the goals are more conservative. Through coordinated impulses, FES is aimed at elevating a person from a chair, allowing he or she to "stand and transfer". Although the action may not seem lofty, this simple movement opens an arena of independence for those restricted to wheelchairs.
In this activity, you'll observe how split second timing is essential to coordinated control. First, you'll assemble two electromagnet circuits. Then, you'll apply coordinated control to direct the roll direction of a steel bearing.
