The Delta Science Module (DSM) series has 51 life, physical, and earth science units for grades K-8 that emphasize science concepts, science content, and process skills. The series includes 12 modules for grades 5-6 and 8 modules for grades 6-8. Each requires about 3 to 4 weeks to complete and includes a teacher's guide and materials for a class of 32 students. Teacher's Guide
Recommended grade level:
Electrical Connections offers 13 activities to increase students' understanding of static and current electricity, electrical circuits, and simple electrical energy converters. The activities are designed to give students concrete experiences building, operating, and analyzing electrical circuits and their applications. Electrical Connections take 30 to 60 minutes each and can be done by students working individually or in groups. In addition to directions for activities, the teacher's guide provides a module overview, a schedule of activities, objectives for each activity, background information, materials management and preparation tips, sample answers to discussion questions, teaching suggestions, and reinforcement activities. Also included are reproducible activity sheets for student work and a performance-based assessment. A "connections" feature at the end of each activity provides suggestions for extending or applying the concepts addressed.

Renewables Are Ready is a "pick-and-choose" guide of 12 multidisciplinary activities that emphasize group work and help teachers introduce students to various renewable energy technologies as well as to some of the political and economic conditions necessary for their implementation. Among the activities, for example, students discover where and how they get the energy they use. They also build a solar box cooker from simple materials, construct a wind machine for generating electricity, play a game that simulates some of the economic changes necessary to make renewables succeed as large-scale electricity sources, and participate in a mock public meeting to determine a site for a new energy facility in a community. Teaching Children About Electricity Children are going back to school all across the Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative service area. They will be learning lots of new information this year, but as a parent there is one more subject you should make sure they understand electric safety. Learning about electricity can help keep you and your children from joining a shocking trend: Nearly four people are electrocuted in the U.S. each week in preventable accidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. To help keep people safe, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) launched " Look Up! Look Down! Look Out! " —a campaign that provides families with simple tips to stay safe around electricity. Suggestions include:
Look Up! Be aware of overhead power lines. Because they can cause serious injury or death, follow these steps: Always assume any overhead line is a power line. Never go near, or let any object you are handling—not just metal objects—come near power lines. Install antennas far from power lines.

ESFI Tools Teach Kids Electrical Safety (NAPS)-New educational tools can make learning about electrical safety fun for children, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). ESFI has released a spanish version of its popular "Mr. Plug Fun Book," designed to help teachers and parents explain electrical safety to children. ESFI has also joined with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), to launch Web-based electrical safety lesson plans in conjunction with NFPAs Risk Watch@ program. "As our reliance on electricity grows, the potential for misuse of home appliances, computers and entertainment equipment means the need for electrical safety awareness is far more important. Teaching children basic electrical safety principles with Risk Watch, or by using the Mr. Plug books, helps establish lifelong electrical safety habits," noted Michael G. Clendenin, ESFI executive director. The Risk Watch electrical lesson plans, for pre-k/kindergarten through eighth grade, will teach kids of all ages to be safe around electricity. The lessons can be found on the Risk Watch Web site, www.riskwatch.org

    SNACK SUPPLIES
This guide is a collection of resources recommended by the teachers who created the original Snackbook. It includes sources for some hard-to-get items, for books and print materials considered exceptionally valuable, for unique suppliers, and for items that might not conventionally be considered to be science resources. It does not pretend to be all-encompassing, exhaustive, or universal, but we hope it will be useful.
    STORES AND SUPPLIERS
We recommend that you browse through toy stores, office supply or stationery stores, and hardware or home repair stores, and think about how the items on display might be used in a science class. This can be an amazingly creative endeavor and can generate long-term rewards. A few examples of uses of common items are given below.
    Toy Stores
You can use dart guns for experiments in projectile motion, wind-up toys for energy transformations, and toy cars of various types for velocity and acceleration experiments.
    Hardware and Home Repair Stores
You can use pulleys and jacks for simple machines, flashlight bulbs, sockets and knife switches for electricity activities, Mini-Mag flashlights and penlight flashlights for light sources, springs for Hooke's Law, and mousetraps to power cars.
    Stationery and Office Supply Stores
You can use spring clips for mirror holders, colored stickers for retinal afterimages, pencils to obtain diffraction patterns, rubber bands for propulsion, paper clips for use in electric motor construction, and banker's box-type cardboard boxes for storage.
