Annual Lobster Boil
Date: Friday, June 17, 2005 Time: 6:30 for 7:00 pm Place: Fluvarium, St. John's The Social Event of the Season! The highlight of the Section's social calendar will be held this year on Friday, June 17, beginning at 7:00 PM. Once again, the location is the Fluvarium with its pleasant décor and great outdoor gallery. The weather, of course, is expected to cooperate for those who wish to wander outside in the early evening. If you don't wish to partake of the fresh, succulent Newfoundland and Labrador lobster as your main course, alternate choices of roast beef or vegetarian will be offered. Your choice must be made when you purchase your ticket so the caterer, Michel's Bakery, can prepare and provide as requested. Please bring your ticket with you to identify which meal you have ordered and to enter in the door prize draws. Prices remain the same as last year; $20 each for IEEE members, who may bring one guest for an additional $20. Non-member cost will be $30 each. In exchange, you will receive a main course, dessert, tea/coffee, and 2 complimentary libation tickets. This is an offer you can't refuse!

EVENT NOTICE - TECHNICAL MEETING
highway tunnels and rock fall sheds
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN CALIFORNIA AND JAPAN
This lecture will be presented by Duncan C. Wyllie, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, the University of New South Wales, Australia, and the University of London. He specializes in rock engineering and has worked in this field for 37 years. During this time, he has been involved in a wide variety of railway, highway and industrial development projects in North and South America, Asia, and the Middle East. Typical assignments include the design and construction of slopes and tunnels, foundations of bridges and dams, and the study of landslides. On many of these projects, the design and evaluation of blasting procedures was an important part of the work One of Duncan’s specialties is the assessment of rock fall hazards, and the design and implementation of remedial measures; he carried out the initial development of a widely used hazard rating system for highways in mountainous terrain. He has also worked in the mining industry in the design of open pit slopes, underground support and tailings dams.
