Car Invention Trivia
Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first crude electric carriage. A small-scale electric car was designed by Professor Stratingh of Groningen, Holland, and built by his assistant Christopher Becker in 1835. P ractical and more successful electric road vehicles were invented by both American Thomas Davenport and Scotsmen Robert Davidson around 1842. Both inventors were the first to use non-rechargeable electric cells. Frenchmen Gaston Plante invented a better storage battery in 1865 and his fellow countrymen Camille Faure improved the storage battery in 1881. This improved-capacity storage battery paved the way for electric vehicles to flourish.

Please send any comments or questions to: Rsuiter@aol.com This car is our Plymouth Laser. This car is a very unique car in many ways. First, it has two advanced DC motors instead of just one. It also has two EVAS controlers. We have estimated it to have a maximum speed of about 140 miles per hour. This is our fastest and newest car. The frame of the car is welded to the roll cage inside and the batters boxes are welded to the frame of the car thus, making this car one piece. The car uses 16, 6 volt Trojan T-145 batteries which give it a range of about 50 miles on a charge. This car is not allowed to compete with other high school cars. An advanced class had to be formed to put this car in to . Click on the laser for more pictures. This is our Dodge Rampage. (Most likely this vehicle will never work again) This is one of our older cars. It competes in the high school class. This car is about four years old. This car is due for some major refinements. Next year we plan to give it a electric overhaul of sorts. We may even consider making it advanced class. This truck, like the laser, runs off of 16, 6 volt trojan batteries, except this one uses lighter T-125 batteries. It has a range of about 45 miles on a charge. It has a G.E. motor and a G.E. controler. We also have a Pontiac Fiero Our Fiero we made workable this year in two months in order to enter it in the Tour De AZ. It like the others runs off of 16, 6 volt Trojan T-125 batteries. This is our only street legal car we have as of now. It also has a G.E. motor and had a G.E. controler but we replaced it with a curtis controler this year. We redesigned the battery boxes to be lighter and hold the batteries better and allow easier access to important components. This car is very close to being street legal this year. It should be done in a few weeks.

1975 EVA Metro (Renault 12 Conversion)
This is a 1975 Renault 12 which was converted to electric power by Electric Vehicle Associates in Cleveland, Ohio in 1975, and renamed the EVA Metro, 1976 model year. The vehicles supplied by Renault were gliders, that is there was no gasoline engine, exhaust system or related components in the vehicle as it left the Renault assembly line and delivered to EVA. This vehicle has never been driven under its own power by anything other than electric propulsion. This vehicle was one of seven purchased by the Province of Manitoba from EVA. This specific car was the personal use vehicle of Premier Ed Schreyer while he was Premier of Manitoba - he was later Governor-General of Canada. He confirmed this to me when I met him at a conference where I displayed the vehicle. Due to problems with battery charging and maintenance, most of the vehicles in the Manitoba fleet fell into disuse and were auctioned off by the Province of Manitoba circa 1980. This vehicle was purchased by a gentleman in Brantford, Ontario who did not return it to operation while he owned it. I purchased it from him in 1982, installed a new battery pack and repaired some minor mechanical items and put it back on the road in June of 1982. I have had it ever since, although it has not been in operating condition continuously during that time.

Electric vehicle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An electric vehicle is a vehicle whose motion is provided by electric motors . The motion may be provided either by wheels or propellors driven by rotary motors, or in the case of tracked vehicles, by linear motors . The electrical energy used to power the motors may be obtained from a direct connection to land-based generation plants, as is common in electric trains; from chemical energy stored on the vehicle in batteries or diesel fuel; from nuclear energy, on nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers; or more esoteric sources such as flywheels, wind and solar. The reasons electric motors are used to drive vehicles are their fine control, high efficiency and simple mechanical construction. Electric motors often achieve 90% conversion efficiency over the full range of speeds and power output and can be precisely controlled. Electric motors can provide torque whilst not moving, unlike internal combustion engines , and do not need gears to match power curves. This removes the need for gearboxes torque convertors and differentials . Electric motors also have the unusual ability to convert movement energy back into electricity, through

ELECTRIC VEHICLES GEAR UP
Battery range, cost, and life limitations are gradually being overcome
Sophie L. Wilkinson
W
ithin just a few years, state mandates will put thousands of electric vehicles on American roads in an effort to curb urban pollution. Government officials, car companies, and suppliers of the batteries that power electric vehicles are hashing out the dates and quotas that will govern their marketing. And they are involved in extensive and expensive research to meet these looming deadlines. The fundamental concept is engaging: Power a car with a battery and shift the tailpipe pollution out of the city back upstream to an electric utility, where environmental impact can be curtailed. That said, the hurdles to successful commercialization are still significant. The key to making electric vehicles a mass-market product is to improve the battery. Whether based on nickel-cadmium, lead-acid, nickel-metal hydride, lithium-ion or lithium-polymer, or any of the other technologies under development, these batteries must overcome high cost, low driving range, and limited life. And these difficulties are evidenced by the mixed feelings voiced by those involved in their evolution. Although some firms in the field, particularly small start-ups, seem to relish their participation in the development of battery-powered vehicles, the major manufacturers, with higher business costs, are acting as a result of government pressure. The development of electric vehicles is "largely being driven by requirements in California, which has the most severe air pollution problem in the country," says Ken Heitner, program manager for electric vehicle advanced battery development at the Department of Energy (DOE). "Recent activity in New York and Massachusetts is also important."

Garbage trucks help clean the air
By Mark Grossi / The Fresno Bee Updated Tuesday, June 14, 2005, 9:45 AM)
Fresno is the first large city in California to clean up its fleet of refuse vehicles and meet a state standard years before deadline, state officials said. The city spent almost $14 million for 69 natural gas-powered refuse vehicles that run cleaner than diesel-powered models, city officials said. Now, more than half of the fleet operates on natural gas — the rest are diesels with new clean-air filters. State regulation requires clean-air conversions for refuse fleets by 2010. Fresno meets that standard.
