hosted by Southern California Edison We had a good turnout for the October meeting which was held on Saturday, October 17, at Southern California Edison in Rosemead. Many thanks to SCE for hosting the meeting, especially for the freshly baked cookies! John Cox opened the meeting with an announcement about the next Club get-together on December 5th. It will be a GMATV event combined with an EV1 Club meeting, similar to the event we held for Kris Trexler. The location is still being determined but it will probably be on the west side of L.A. He then started a round of self-introductions. In addition to EV1 owners there were several prospective owners, speakers and guests from L.A. Department of Water and Power (DWP), SCE, GM Advanced Technology Vehicles (GMATV), Nissan, and Ford, and of course many supporters from Saturn and GM.

We incorporated grassrootsev.com and have stocks available for anyone who is interested in becoming a serious part of our organization.
I am opening my shop doors to people who need help with their EV projects for $25/hour. Dan is also available and is an excellent mechanic. We will take monthly payments on labor and if you can't do that but still need help we'll work something out. I am always happy to give someone a ride in one of my EV conversions. The main objective of the Florida Electric Vehicle Club is to let as many people as possible experience driving an EV, and to share what we have learned about converting gas vehicles to electric.
We have a great deal on 9" motors which are ideal for car conversions just click on the catalog. Anyone who purchases a motor from us will also get a "Convert Your Vehicle to Electric" Video.

Hub Motors are In
The first sea freight shipment of 30 hub motors arrived in early April, about 5 months later than expected due to various reasons. Most of the 15 or so claimed by members have been sold, and we will be unloading the rest to the general public through the hub motor page , which you should check for more information.

Gas Price Anti-Protest, Fri Apr 29th 2005
Last Friday, hundreds of truckers in the lower mainland formed a convoy and staged a protest drive in response to rising fuel prices cutting into their revenue. We of couse sympathize with the trucker's plight, but the solution is not to reduce gas tax (as they were suggesting) but to pass the rising fuel cost on to the consumer in all the products that are transported by truck. Increasing fuel costs is just about the best thing that could happen to our world right now, and we thought this was an ideal opportunity to get that point out. Unfotunately this came up on very short notice. The convoy started around 9am, and by the time Me, Stefan, and Paul had our banners prepared and strapped to our ebikes it was after noon. We still caught the tail end of the convoy though. The reaction from both drivers and the truckers was great, lots of positive cheering and honking. Our message: "Leave Fuel for the Truckers, Ride an E-BIKE"

Moving forward, the center employed a researcher/instructor with an automotive background and a curriculum developer. Partnerships were formed with local businesses and individuals interested in seeing the project get off to a good start. Affiliations were established with local and national organizations such as Clean Cities and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Americas (presently the Electric Drive Vehicle Association).
The Office of the Governor of Oklahoma became interested in the project and with help from other state agencies a grant was secured from the Exxon Overcharge Fund. Another grant was awarded through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. The department has been instrumental in providing additional funds for further curriculum development and program enhancement.
Additional Training Areas
An advisory committee helped identify additional areas of training. Curriculum was designed to offer training in electrically powered lift trucks and other off road vehicles. Another course was developed for technicians needing a review of their knowledge of basic electricity.

GM to give away thousands of electric vehicles Mail this story to a friend Printer friendly version USA: August 16, 2002
SANTA BARBARA - General Motors Corp. will give away thousands of golf cart-like electric vehicles to comply with California regulations forcing automakers to sell pollution-free vehicles, GM officials said this week.
Over the next three years, GM will give the vehicles to California businesses and charitable organizations so the automaker can earn zero-emission vehicle credits, which are counted toward the state's goal of getting more environmentally friendly vehicles on the road. Some will also be given away in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts, which have tended to follow California's lead in tightening environmental standards for the automotive industry, said GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss.

To Help Reduce Dependency on Foreign Oil Major Bank Makes Commitment to Purchase Environmentally Friendly Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Environmentalists Cite Bank for Environmental Leadership
(October 14, 2002) Ohio Savings Bank/AmTrust Bank, one of the top ten mortgage lenders in the U.S., has committed to replacing company vehicles with environmentally friendly hybrid electric vehicles wherever feasible. The bank estimates that it will purchase 24 hybrid electric vehicles in the next two years. "Our objective in making the switch (to hybrids) is to do our part to reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil," said Gerald Goldberg, co-chairman of the board of Ohio Savings Bank. "Though individually it may seem like it won't make a difference, imagine what would happen if all of the companies in Cleveland, or in the state of Ohio, or even better, across the country, did the same." "In the past few months, two of our senior executives in Cleveland have started driving hybrids, we have a third hybrid based at our Boca Raton, Florida branch office, and we plan to covert many company issued cars over to the hybrids within the next two years," said Goldberg. "While we've had standards in place regarding company-owned vehicles in the past, such as a minimum fuel economy, adopting the policy of purchasing only hybrids makes a much stronger statement."

Argonne's annual operating budget of about $470 million supports more than 200 research projects, ranging from studies of the atomic nucleus to global climate change research. Since 1990, Argonne has worked with more than 600 companies and numerous federal agencies and other organizations. Argonne has been conducting transportation research at Argonne for the past three decades. Profile Sister Action By Marilyn Berlin Snell The move toward "socially responsible investing" in the United States started in the 1960s, as people began to shun companies like Dow Chemical that were profiting from the manufacture of napalm for the Vietnam War. Some investors sold off their "sin stocks," while others used annual shareholder meetings to submit resolutions that called on these companies to stop what they saw as immoral business practices. The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility was founded during this era. One of its domestic efforts was against the textile manufacturer J. P.
