HEL.I.E.V. ACTIVITY
On 17-18 of June 1993 a two days Conference was organized by the HEL.I.E.V. in Athens.
Subject: "The electrically driven vehicles for transportation purposes".
More than 200 people made an audience deeply involved in to the Conference works. Representatives from various governmental bodies as well from other public sectors were present. Many papers presented and discussed and a lot of opinions exchanged. All presented papers published in to official magazine of Graduated Engineers. Since its foundation, HEL.I.E.V. supplies with all available information regarding the progress noted in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles, many organizations of the public sector (Energy, Transportation, Communications etc.) as well as many local authorities. Acting occasionally as a consulting body offers free of charge services to many authorities interested in applications of "clean transportation means". HEL.I.E.V. publishes scientific and popularized articles concerning electric and hybrid vehicles. Participates in radio and television programs, promoting the necessity of electric and hybrid vehicles for a cleaner environment and less noise. HEL.I.E.V becomes co-organizer of Paneuropean Conference for Clean Cars" organized in Athens on 16-18 May 1997. During this event an exhibition and a speed race for electric cars were organized for first time in Greece.

Ideas for the community
Physics is all around us, not just hidden in school classrooms. Why not help others experience physics in their everyday lives, with these suggestions as a guide? You don’t need to be an expert yourself – you just need to be keen to share your interest. Those event ideas can be run by clubs or similar organizations. Film night
Arrange a viewing of your favourite physics-related movie. You could hold it in a community or school hall, or maybe a local organization will let you use their space. Why not invite a local physicist to introduce the film and point out some of the physics in the film the audience is about to see? You don’t have to restrict yourself to documentaries – you might like to pick science fiction or maybe a drama in which scientists or science play an important role. Meet a physicist
How often do members of the community have a chance to ask all those burning questions they have about science? Ask a local physicist (or more than one) to talk about his or her work and challenge them to answer all your trickiest, stickiest questions about the world around us. (Ask them about Einstein’s relativity, black holes, superstrings or quarks – it might sound brain-bending but your audience will be captivated.)

During the celebration, the two founders presented a scholarship check to the recipient of this year’s I/O Software Technology Innovation Scholarship, James Robertson, a Computer Engineering sophomore at UCR. He was recognized for a unique engineering approach to a non-biometric algorithm, and for showing great personal initiative through his independent project. The annual scholarship, created to share I/O Software's success with the community and encourage a new generation of students to pursue their own visions, is open to all computer science, mathematics and physics college students in California.

    SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES
    ELECTRIC HONDA T
he Sierra Club just honored the Honda Insight with the first product award in the organization's 108-year history, the "Sierra Club Award for Excellence in Environmental Engineering" Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director, presented the award at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Insight was chosen because of its revolutionary hybrid design and fuel efficiency of more than 60 miles per gallon. According to EPA tests for model year 2000 vehicles the Insight beat its nearest competitor by nearly 20 mpg. "I feel like the proverbial man who bit a dog," said Pope. "After all, it isn't every millennium the Sierra Club praises a car. But the Honda Insight deserves this first Award because it marks the beginning of the automotive industry utilizing 21st Century technology." As a hybrid, the Insight combines attributes of electric and gasoline motors. The Insight's highly efficient gas-powered engine, refillable at any gas station, powers the vehicle and also generates electricity for the electric motor, which also helps provide power. The Insight also captures the energy typically lost to braking, directing it to recharge the batteries. Unlike purely electric vehicles a hybrid does not need to be plugged in. Because the Insight runs on both gasoline and clean electricity it achieves fuel economy of 61 mpg in city and 70 mpg in highway driving and therefore emits much less global warming and air pollution than other vehicles.
