42. History Of Chile Under Salvador Allende And The Popular Unity
Allende wins the 1970 elections; achievements and problems of the Popular Unity; the tank attack ( el tanquetazo ) against the constitutional government; the definitive coup (September 11, 1973). This site features essays about the period and rare photographs of the events it describes.

History of Chile under Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity
INTRODUCTION But now, after his ill-fated trip to Great Britain, the wall of immunity that Pinochet had built around himself and his collaborators in the Chilean military appears to be collapsing. In a 14 to 6 vote, the Chilean Supreme Court removed Pinochet's congressional immunity, making it likely he will stand trial for his alleged involvement in the torture and deaths of thousands who opposed his military regime. The way would then at last be cleared for those Chileans still seeking justice -and the full truth- on behalf of their tortured, killed, or vanished relatives and friends. Finally, having undertaken this research as a graduate student of History at the City University of New York for the course The Historian and the Computer, the purpose of this website is to provide the visitor with a comprehensive description of several events that led to the downfall of Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity government.
BIBLIOGRAPHY The single best historical source for this period is Los mil dias de Allende Another important source is Chile: la memoria prohibida Tanquetazo and ends in 1983.

    History and Government
History: At this point, the military entered the political arena – by virtue of successfully putting down a farm workers’ revolt led by Augustin Farabundo Marti – and has retained a central role ever since. The repressive nature of military government and the alliance formed between senior army officers and the land-owning families who controlled the economy, caused growing discontent among workers and, gradually, the Catholic clergy, which had traditionally sided with the ruling classes. Economic problems grew throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, with a brief diversion provided by the 1969 ‘Soccer War’ with Honduras (essentially a border dispute, despite its title). A disputed election in 1972, won by a Conservative military candidate, triggered widespread political violence. But it was the 1980 assassination of Archbishop Romero – a leading critic of civil rights abuses – by right-wing elements, which accelerated the country’s plunge into civil war. Since then, ARENA has dominated domestic politics as the FLMN tried to find its feet in the new political environment. It was not until the March 2000 National Assembly election that the FLMN became the largest in the

    Government and Politics
Voter casting his ballot Although the system established by the Constitution of 1983 was functional, some observers questioned its legitimacy because it excluded the Salvadoran left from the political process. As the 1989 presidential elections approached, however, these claims lost some of their validity in the face of the return to El Salvador of such opposition figures as Guillermo Manuel Ungo Revelo and Ruben Zamora Rivas, the establishment of the Social Democratic Party and the possibility, however dubious, of a settlement between the government and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front-Revolutionary Democratic Front within the framework of the Central American Peace Agreement signed in Esquipulas, Guatemala, on August 7, 1987 (the so-called Arias Plan). Observers were reluctant to predict the odds of successful implemention of a genuine democratic system in El Salvador, a country with no real democratic tradition to draw on, where economic conditions were tenuous at best and where a destructive and divisive insurgent conflict wore on with no resolution in sight. It was clear, however, that the El Salvador of the late 1980s was different from the El Salvador of the 1970s and that further change was inevitable, even if the exact nature of that change remained uncertain. Data as of November 1988

The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respects this right in practice. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report, and government policy continued to contribute to the generally free practice of religion. The Constitution specifically recognizes the Roman Catholic Church and grants it legal status. The generally amicable relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom. The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom issues with the Government in the context of its overall dialog and policy of promoting human rights. Section I. Religious Demography The country has a total area of 8,108 square miles, and its population is over 6 million. The country is predominantly Roman Catholic. According to a 1998 survey by the Central American University Public Opinion Institute, approximately 55.2 percent of the population were members of the Roman Catholic Church. Additionally, 20.6 percent were members of Protestant churches, 2.1 percent were associated with other churches and religious groups, and 22.1 percent were not affiliated with any church or religion. Outside of the Catholic and Protestant churches, there are small communities representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Seventh-day Adventist, Baptist, Jewish, and Muslim faiths, among others. A very small segment of the population practices a native religion. The predominance of the Catholic Church does not impact negatively on the religious freedom of other denominations. Several Protestant missionary groups are active in the country.

There are at least three versions used:

For many years, repression, torture and murder were carried on in El Salvador by dictators installed and supported by our government, a matter of no interest here. The story was virtually never covered. By the late 1970s, however, the US government began to be concerned about a couple of things.
One was that Somoza, the dictator of Nicaragua, was losing control . The US was losing a major base for its exercise of force in the region. A second danger was even more threatening. In El Salvador in the 1970s, there was a growth of what were called "popular organizations"-peasant associations, cooperatives, unions, Church-based Bible study groups that evolved into self-help groups, etc. That raised the threat of democracy.
In February 1980, the Archbishop of EI Salvador, Oscar Romero, sent a letter to President Carter in which he begged him not to send military aid to the junta that ran the country. He said such aid would be used to "sharpen injustice and repression against the people's organizations" which were struggling "for respect for their most basic human rights" (hardly news to Washington, needless to say).
A few weeks later, Archbishop Romero was assassinated while saying a mass. The neo-Nazi
