Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th U.S. president Gives first speech bounced off a satellite "This is one more significant step in the United States' program of space research and exploration." (August 12, 1960) On August 12, 1960, Echo 1, the world's first passive communications satellite, was successfully launched into orbit by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). After entering an orbit at an altitude of about 1,000 miles, the satellite inflated an aluminum-coated Mylar balloon designed to reflect radio waves back to earth. Unlike modern communication satellites, Echo was passive, meaning it could only reflect radio signalsnot actively receive, amplify, or transit them. Nevertheless, Echo was a major achievement for NASA, and on the day of its launching, a special recorded message from President Dwight Eisenhower was bounced off the satellite and picked up by radio operators across the nation.

Dwight D. Eisenhower
US President - 1953-61 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. He pursued the moderate policies of "Modern Republicanism," pointing out as he left office, "America is today the strongest, most influential, and most productive nation in the world." Born in Texas in 1890, brought up in Abilene, Kansas, Eisenhower was the third of seven sons. He excelled in sports in high school, and received an appointment to West Point. Stationed in Texas as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916.

American President Dwight David Eisenhower, 1890-1969
America's 34th President, Dwight David Eisenhower, one of 7 sons of a poor Kansas family rose to lead one of history's largest armed forces and later a nation. Having commanded the Allied Forces during World War II, served as the first Supreme Commander of NATO and guided America to peace by ending the Korean War, Dwight D. Eisenhower died in his 8th year of retirement on March 28th, 1969. David Dwight Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas in 1890, the 3rd of 7 sons of David Eisenhower and his wife Ida Stover, a deeply religious couple who moved their family to Abilene, Kansas, soon after the birth of their 3rd son. Named for his father who was a mechanic, Eisenhower was called Dwight David to eliminate confusion, and all the Eisenhower boys were tagged "Ike" by their father in much the way they might have been called "pal". The Eisenhowers were extremely poor and all of the sons worked as soon as they were able, beginning with house chores and labor in the gardens that fed the large family until they were old enough for outside jobs. Dwight excelled at sports and showed small interest in school, though he was enthralled by history and managed to be an average student despite his schedule of jobs and sports. He maintained through life a passion for golf, and as President had squirrels "Banned from the White House" after he discovered their nut burying wreaked havoc on his putting green.

The Early Years
Dwight Eisenhower was born in Dennison, Texas. He grew up in a poor family. He was educated in local public schools, and graduated from Abilene High School in 1909. Eisenhower was interested in attending the Naval Academy, but was told that he was too old (he had just passed his 20th birthday) and was ineligible. Instead, he went the US Military Academy at West Point. He was an average student, graduating 64th out of 164 students. Upon his graduation, Eisenhower was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served throughout the war within the United States borders, rising to the temporary rank of lieutenant colonel. Between the World Wars, Eisenhower held various assignments, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in September, 1941. Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff for war plans. He then became Chief of the General Staff - Operations Division. In June 1942, he was appointed Commander of US Forces in Europe. In that capacity, he led the US invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then, finally, the US invasion of Normandy. Upon his return to the US in November 1945, he was named Army Chief of Staff. He resigned from the Army in 1948. From 1948 until 1950, he was President of Columbia University. From 1951 until 1953 he served as the first Commander of NATO.

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower Pros and Cons of Presidency
About the U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a list of pros and cons in the history of his presidency.
34th President DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER PRESIDENCY His 8 Years as President: PRO Eisenhower was a great symbol of national unity, who helped bring the nation together after the partisan bitterness of the Truman years. By placing himself above the day-to-day business of politics, Eisenhower brought new dignity to the presidential office. CON Despite his enormous personal prestige, Eisenhower ignored the pleas of responsible leaders of both parties, and did nothing to stop the virus of McCarthyism, a disease that was wrecking the lives of thousands of Americans. In the campaign of '52, Ike even endorsed Senator McCarthy for reelection, and during the early years of his term, the President said nothing while the Wisconsin demagogue assaulted one federal department after another. PRO Eisenhower made unusually distinguished appointments to the Supreme Court. In his selection of Earl Warren, Ike picked one of the great Chief Justices in our history. CON Eisenhower did little to support the Supreme Court when it made its most important decisionordering the desegregation of the public schools. When a racist governor of Arkansas openly defied the court's decree, Ike moved slowly, and only with great reluctance, to enforce the law of the land.

In fact, Dwight D. Eisenhower was raised a Jehovah's Witness, a [group ] commonly called Russellites or Bible Students until 1931. His mother was active in the [group ] from 1895, when Dwight was five years old, until she died. Eisenhower's father was also an active member, although after 1915 he eventually no longer considered himself a Witness. All of the Eisenhower boys left the Jehovah's Witness religion when adults and openly opposed major aspects of Watchtower teaching, although some of the values they learned from their Bible studies probably influenced them throughout their lives. Some Watchtower values may even have been reflected in Dwight's statements against war made in his latter life. Nonetheless, the Eisenhower's endeavored to hide the full extent of their mother's and family's Watchtower involvement although they did at times admit their affiliation with them. The reasons why the Eisenhower boys took great pains to hide their early Watchtower associations are discussed.

Relevance : " Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children... This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."
The arms trade is a major cause of human rights abuses. Some governments spend more on military expenditure than on social development, communications infrastructure and health combined. While every nation has the right and the need to ensure its security, in these changing times, arms requirements and procurements may need to change too.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), 34th President of the United States (1953-1961) and General of the Army
Dwight David Eisenhower was born at Denison, Texas, on 14 October 1890. He was raised at Abilene, Kansas, where his family moved when he was an infant. Eisenhower entered the U.S. Military Academy, at West Point, New York, in 1911 and graduated in 1915. Following commissioning as an officer of the United States Army, he served initially in Texas and subsequently in a variety of other posts at home and abroad. Training duties during World War I prevented him from seeing combat action. After the war Eisenhower worked directly with several of the Army's most important officers, among them Douglas MacArthur and George C. Marshall, earning a reputation as one of the service's premier staff officers. Soon after the United States entered World War II, Brigadier General Eisenhower was put in charge of Army war plans. Five months later he was given command of U.S. forces in the British Isles. In November 1942 Lieutenant General Eisenhower led the invasion of North Africa and the subsequent operations that, after hard fighting that produced vital combat experience for the as yet unseasoned Army, drove the Germans and Italians from the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Promoted to the rank of General early in 1943, Eisenhower commanded the invasions of Sicily in July and of the Italian mainland in September of that year.
