Its syntax is keyword-oriented in the ALGOL and Pascal tradition. Eiffel is strongly statically typed , with automatic memory management (typically implemented by garbage collection Created in 1985, Eiffel is a mature object-oriented language with development systems available from multiple suppliers. Despite this maturity and a generally excellent reputation among those who are familiar with the language, Eiffel has failed to gain as large a following as some other object-oriented languages. The reasons for this lack of interest are unclear, and are a topic of frequent discussion within the Eiffel community. Distinguishing characteristics of Eiffel include Design by contract (DbC), liberal use of inheritance INTEGER Eiffel has operator overloading , including the ability to define new operators, but does not have method overloading

Introduction
Welcome to the Eiffel International Eiffel Programming Contest 2005. On this page you should find all the information necessary to submit an entry. As all Eiffel vendors have a free version of their tools, you can use the tool that suits you. The closing date is 31 October 2005. Entries received on or after 1 November 2005 0:00 GMT have to be rejected. You can compete in several areas. For example in innovation, portability, or readability. See the judging rules for how entries are judged. Much success!
Rules for this Contest
Overview of the rules:
  • To enter, submit an Eiffel application or library. Any individual or organization may participate, except Berend de Boer. Entries can compete anonymously. Judges will not get the name of the author of the library or application. If the author's name is in the indexing clause of every class, their entry is not anonymous and no effort will be made to make it anonymous. It is therefore up to the contestant to enter an anonymous entry. Judges may participate, but only anonymously. It is up to the judges to submit an entirely anonymous library or application. For example, it should not contain an indexing clause with the name of the author, nor should it be an library or application that is already well-known. If Berend de Boer considers an entry submitted by a judge not anonymous enough, it will not compete.

    Updated June 18. eFractal means e(Eiffel)Fractal. Eiffel is an Object Oriented language that is really nice to program in. I like it because it is very readable, easy to build upon good libraries, and the typical technological reasons. Basically I am able to take programs like Miron Brezuleanu's eSwirl and his EXG toolkit and get a nice program working quickly. To me it is a language that takes the work of the best 10% of programmers and makes it so you can build upon that work and get things running correctly. And all the while making it so I don't destroy all the work the best progammers have put into their code. Some links . . .

    Prof. Dr. Bertrand Meyer, ETH Description
    The course presents a detailed description of Eiffel techniques, sufficient to start developing systems in Eiffel and to understand the concepts of Design by Contract. It is meant both for software developers and project leaders, as well as for decision makers interested in trends of software engineering. Course goal
    The course provides participants with concrete techniques for producing better software faster and cheaper. It includes an in-depth description of important principles of modern software engineering, object-oriented methodology, and the design of successful reusable components. Its emphasis is on practical techniques, which can be readily applied in an everyday setting. For teams using Eiffel, the course provides sufficient information to get started immediately; for those using other approaches, it provides a complementary perspective enabling participants to use their existing object-oriented tools better. Target groups
    Software developers; project managers; information technology executives.

    1. Introduction to object-orientation.
    There is little that is new in object-oriented software development. Its main ideas have been around for over two decades since the development of the programming languages Simula and Smalltalk. It is now a well-established technology, and its advantages are well understood. If only we could learn to use it well, we should be able to build high quality software systems which are modularised and decentralised;
    • are factored around data rather than processes;
    • are built using existing well-tested components;
    • promote the development of new components;
    • are easy to understand and maintain;
    • are better able to withstand change;
    • allow a relatively seamless transition from analysis through to design and implementation
    Older approaches are however still very much in evidence, and most readers of this text are likely to have had some exposure to more traditional approaches to software development. This chapter begins therefore by comparing the process-oriented and object-oriented approaches to software development. It also provides an introduction to the main concepts of object-orientation, and concludes with an introduction to the Eiffel programming philosophy and language.
