A Brief Bibliography for Pyramids
Education Department
Gayle Gibson Pyramids are the most enduring monuments that mankind has built. They are endlessly fascinating. Many good books on pyramids are widely available. This bibliography discusses most of the books that can be found in libraries or purchased from good bookstores. The notes on each book are intended to help you to choose which books suit your needs best. If you can only afford one book, this is the one to buy.
  • Lehner, Mark. The Complete Pyramids: Solving the Ancient Mysteries London: Thames and Hudson, 1997. 556 illustrations, 83 in colour. 256 pages, with index.
Mark Lehner has been working at Giza since 1979, since 1984 as Director of the Giza Plateau Mapping Project. He writes clearly, and has the benefit of the most recent research. This book covers all the currently known pyramids of Egypt, and gives six pages to the pyramids of Sudan. The book begins with an overview of Egyptian religious beliefs (the why of pyramid building , and proceeds to early accounts of pyramids by Greeks and Romans, Copts and Arabs, goes on to describe the first European explorers, and continues with accounts of the more famous expeditions, current explorations and recent discoveries. Construction techniques are described, and the evidence for various methods is carefully considered. Lehner discusses methods of quarrying and transporting stone and other supplies to the sites of pyramids. The towns for those working on the pyramids are also described. *****

The focus of a complex of ritual buildings, the pyramid was the magical powerhouse where the mummified pharaoh would attain eternal life. The first pyramid was Djoser's Step Pyramid, built not long after Egypt had become a unified land (in approximately 3000 BC). The Great Pyramid of Khufu, at Giza, was raised a century later. But these pyramids did not come from a technological void. A clear evolution can be traced from the most ancient prehistoric graves to the splendours of the Giza plateau. The Great Pyramid (Khufu's) at Giza Egypt's highest ranking Old Kingdom civil servants were interred at Saqqara, close to Memphis and the temple of Re at Heliopolis. Here the burial chambers were gradually cut deeper until they passed into the bedrock. Lined with wood, their ceilings were topped with a low mound and then surrounded by a low, rectangular mud-brick building known as a mastaba after the Arabic mastaba (low bench).

The Pyramids of Egypt
Many of the pyramids were built with a number of different stone materials.  Most of the material used was fairly rough, low grade limestone used to build the pyramid core, while fine white limestone was often employed for the outer casing as well as to cover interior walls, though pink granite was also often used on inner walls. Basalt or alabaster was not uncommon for floors, particularly in the mortuary temples and as was mudbricks to build walls within the temples (though often as not they had limestone walls). Egypt is a country rich in stone and was sometimes even referred to as the "state of stone".  In particular, Egypt has a great quantity of limestone formation, which the Egyptians called "white stone", because during the Cretaceous period Egypt was covered with seawater. The country is also rich in sandstone, but it was never really used much until the New Kingdom. Limestone seems to have first been employed in the area of Saqqara, where it is of poor quality but layered in regular, strong formations as much as half a meter thick. This limestone is coarse grained with yellow to greenish gray shading.  The layers are separated from each other by thin layers of clay and the coloration may vary according to layer. It could often be quarried very near the building sites, and quarries have been found at Saqqara, Giza, Dahshur and other locations. In order to quarry this stone, the blocks were marked out with just enough space in between each to allow for a small passageway for the workers to cut the blocks.  The workmen would use a number of different tools to cut the blocks, including copper pickaxes and chisels, granite hammers, dolerite and other hard stone tools.

The Pyramids of Egypt, built at Giza during the 4th Dynasty (circa 2680-c. 2544 BC) are the oldest of the seven wonders and the only ones remaining intact today (see Pyramids). The Great Pyramid of Khufu (circa 2600 BC) was the greatest of the Egyptian pyramids, which served as burial places of the pharaohs, particularly during the Old Kingdom. Some lists included all of the pyramids and the Sphinx as well. The great pyramids of Giza were built around 2700-2500 BC as tombs for the pharoahs (rulers of ancient Egypt, who held the status of gods on earth). The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops to the Greeks) is the largest, pictured here in the center of the photograph, it covers 13 acres. It was constructed of around 2.3 million stones and each of the stones weigh from 2 to 30 tons each.

Hapi/ Hapy
Hapi was more the personification of the Inundation of the Nile ( Iterw ), than of the river Nile itself. He was worshipped for two reasons; the actual waters of the Inundation which were life-bringing to Egypt, and the fertility and sustainment made possible by the Nile silt left on its shores when the Inundation drew back again. But there were no guarantees for Hapi always giving an abundance; references have been found to a 'large' or 'small' Hapy. The Inundation could be either too high or too low, which meant threats as people could drown, or famine because of no growth. Hapi was depicted as a somewhat overweight man, to symbolize abundance, and with female breasts to symbolize the river’s fertile properties. In this aspect he is linked to several fecundity figures, or 'Nile gods' which personify abundance of various kinds, of which the Inundation is the most important and fundamental one. These fecundity figures can be seen bringing offerings to the King, or they can, together with the King bring offerings to deities in their temples. Hapi is an ancient god, mentioned already in the Pyramid Texts. In Utterance 581 it says:

Amun, Amon, Amen; Egyptian Imen meaning "the hidden one" - one of ancient Egypt´s most impportant deities appearing in many aspects; Primeval Creator God, Sun God, Fertility God, Universal God, Warrior God. First mentionings of Amun are found in the Pyramid Texts (5th Dynasty) where he is a primeval deity whose shadow protects the other gods. In Utterance 301; An adress to the primeval gods, §446 it says:
You have your offering-bread, O Niu and Nenet,
You two protectors(?) of the gods
Who protect the gods with our shadow.
You have your offering-bread, O Amun and Amanuet,
You two protectors(?) of the gods
Who protect the gods with your shadow.

Amun began his rise to nationwide importance in the 11th Dynasty when kings at Waset (Thebes) took the name Amenemhet ('Amun is pre-eminent'). Here he soon overtook the local warrior god Montu and formed together with the godess Mut as his spouse and Khonsu as their son, the Triad of Waset.
Sources
Amun is well documented in numerous texts and iconography. Sun hymns and theological material are plenty and varied, giving good opportunity to research his nature, function and worship.

The Mystery of the Egyptian Pyramids - Solved
Some Personal views and comments on the Egyptian pyramids.
  • Everyone wonders how the Egyptian pyramids were built.
  • On the other hand, why does nobody ask how the ancient south American temple pyramids were built?
This probably is because they have an open outer stairway . Although this doesn't really change much, it makes everything seem obvious.
  • Who says that the ancient Egyptian pyramids didn't?
  • Or to put it differently: Why were the Egyptian pyramids built in the first place?

So here we are:
The Puzzle of the Pyramids - solved!
This is the idea:

Question
Where are the unfinished pyramids?
A pyramid planned too large and left unfinished would have the tip missing; a pyramid planned too small and later enlarged would, perhaps, be missing part of the outer layer.
Some things should be taken into consideration
  • The pyramids of ancient Egypt and the temples of ancient South America are quite similarly built: for both huge blocks of stone were joined without a crack; the difference being that in Egypt the stone blocks had quite a uniform size, while in the earthquake-endangered Andes region they were of different shapes and sizes; this may have been to avoid resonance.
  • The pyramids of ancient Egypt were burial chambers Inside, in gold-plated sarcophagi, lay the carefully embalmed bodies of her highest priests and kings (in one person).

Special Offers The ancient Egyptians built their tombs on the west side of the Nile River and their temples on the east. This practice corresponded to the rise and setting of the sun which represented the cycle of life itself. The east signified rebirth and the west signified death. With the tombs on the west or left bank, the spirits of the dead would be ready to journey into the cycle of life. The Egyptians believed strongly in the afterlife and made complete preparation for this journey. The three pyramids are actually tombs of three pharaohs of the Old Kingdom. In its most common form, a pyramid is a massive stone or brick structure with a square base and four sloping triangular sides that meet in a point at the top. Pyramids have been built by different peoples at various times in history. Probably the best-known pyramids are those of ancient Egypt, which were built to protect the tombs of rulers or other important persons. Pyramids were also built as platforms for temples by pre-Columbian civilizations in Central and South America. Still other pyramids exist in Sudan, Southwest Asia, and Greece. In the 26th century BC, as Egyptian civilization was reaching its height, three kings Khufu, his son Khafre, and his grandson Menkure ordered the construction of three huge pyramids that would serve as their tombs. The first of these, the Great Pyramid, is the largest ever built. It stands with the other two pyramids and the Great Sphinx in a cluster near the town of Giza.

The great king influenced an age that spread like wild fire in a parched forest. This was the Pyramid Age. Before King Khufu started the construction of his pyramid, the expansive burial place was not as popular. Until this time, pharaohs The pyramids of Egypt were constructed as a funerary ritual during the "Pyramid Age" (Aldred 49). Historians say that pyramids were built as transportation devices to the afterlife. Pharaohs made sure that had all material possessions that had been cherished in their lifetime were placed inside. This was to insure the pharaoh that he/she would be as happy in the afterlife as in their previous life. Pyramid building in Egypt started sometime around 2780 BC with King Djoser. King Djoser’s pyramid was made of six matsabas The Egyptian Pyramid Matsaba tombs were built for the king’s family- wives, sons, and daughters, and for high court officials. The burial places were constructed around the pyramid of the pharaoh to enable these members of the royal family and court to have the "privilege" of surrounding the king in death, just as they had in life. These pyramids have opened present-day minds to the intelligence and technology of individuals that lived some five thousand years before. Inside the massive, final resting-places, hundreds of millions of dollars in possessions were found. It is possible that builders and pharaohs thought that by putting treasured items in the tomb, that they would be happy.

The fact that there is burial places of old Pharaons is long as disproved recognized - there more puts behind. The Egyptian culture developed - just like the sumerische (the Sumerer built the first large and monumental stone temples) - relatively quickly. Quasi from that nothing out - thus without cultural preliminary stages - was it suddenly there! Too quickly, in order to achieve on normal development way one solch` enormous knowledge conditions. Who thus arranged these universal knowledge for them? I am personal the conviction that at least one civilization of ower ahead went! The texts, inscribed on the walls of the inner chambers of the pyramids [from c. 2686-c. 2160 BC]., are found at Saqqarah in several 5th- and 6th-dynasty pyramids, of which that of Unas , last king of the 5th dynasty, is the earliest known. The Egyptian pyramids were funerary monuments built for the pharaohs and their closest relatives. Most date from the Old Kingdom (c.2686-2181 BC) and are found on the west bank of the Nile, in a region approximately 100 km long and situated south of the delta, between Hawara and Abu Ruwaysh. Pyramids developed from the "mastaba", a low, rectangular stone structure erected over a tomb. HOW TO NAVIGATE:

Tests and Assessments: Syllabus Old World Prehistory, Origins of Civilizations Even more than the previous sections on North and South America, this section is the very briefest of summaries of the whole rest of the world, highlighting only one or two sites from the hundreds of thousands that are important in the development of local and national cultural traditions (and several chapters of the text are skipped). It eliminates completely the later, secondary states that are part of what are sometimes the classical civilizations, such as Greece and Rome, and many many others that are often studied in history classes even though they have a rich archaeology. Also NOT covered in this section are historical archaeology of most of the world, or development of secondary states in most of the world (Great Zimbabwe is an exception to this) Briefly describe the pristine states that emerged in the 4 areas of the Old World. The first civilization in the world arose in Mesopotamia, the land around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Iran and Iraq, in southwest Asia, around 3000 B.C. It was characterized by temple-based cities such as Eridu, with stepped pyramids called ziggurats, and canal irrigation farming, and cunieform writing on clay tablets. The earliest city emerged at Uruk, where early dynasties used armies with bronze weapons and chariots to conquer and control. A succession of city-states rose and fell, and powerful leaders and elites were buried with incredible wealth, including wagons and chariots, oxen, and human servants and other sacrifices, showing marked social stratification. How does this history relate to what is going on in this region of the world today? Can constant conflict become a part of culture history destined to continue?
