21. Egypt
Apart from the pyramids, Cairo offers also other attractions like the many other places in Egypt, where the focus is on egyptians and egyptian culture.
http://www.svenbugarski.de/travel/Africa/Aegypten/Aegypten.html
Egypt One of the major destinations in Africa. In my opinion this country doesn't represent the "real" Africa: wide plains with wildlife, traditional villages etc. are rather found in countries further south. If you don't care about thousands of tourists around you and if you are interested in historical sights and in Egypt's liberal Arab culture, Egypt can definitely offer you very much. I've visited Egypt in 1997 in spring time and in 2003 in late summer. When traveling to Egypt, the season should be considered, as Egypt's interior can get terribly hot from May till September. Prices in Egypt for accommodation, food and many services were well below European standards, but in many cases persistent bargaining is necessary for foreigners. The English of most locals was poor, so that communication problems occurred frequently and made things more difficult and sometimes more expensive. Being one of the best developed countries in Africa, Egypt has all services that travelers need. It is very easy to travel around, there is always budget accommodation available and there are no visa hassles for most nationals. In 1997 and 2003, visas could quickly be bought at the airport in Cairo - no forms, pictures and invitations, just around 15 Euros. Alexandria Situated at the Mediterranean Sea, it has a very long and nice promenade (see picture) along the coast. At the beginning of April it was too cold to go swimming, but also in Summer time I would avoid untouristy beaches, because especially European females might get in trouble with conservative locals.

Forum "I could not understand [Plato's] dialogues until I visited Ethiopia.'' - Jean Doresse, Historian During the recent interview between journalist Haimanot Alemu and Dr Lapisso G. Delebo on ''face-to-face'' programme of Ethiopian Television (ETV), Jean Doresse's books were frequently refered to by the latter. Inspired by this Ato Akalu W. Mariam took the opportunity during his recent visit to France to find J. Doresse in his house in Fayance, about 926 km from Paris, and conduct an interview with him. J. Doresse, 85, is a renowned historian specializing on Egyptian and Ethiopian history. He had published a number of books on ancient and medieval history of Ethiopia including ''Ethiopia under the Kingdom of Queen of the Sheba'' and ''The Prester John of Ethiopia''. J. Doresse, who has spent much of his life time in Ethiopia, pioneered the French Archaeological study on Ethiopia and the center for the Ethio-French studies. He was also Editor-in-chief of the first French newspaper in Ethiopia "L'Ethiopie d'Aujourd'hui". J. Doresse is currently writing a book on the people of southern Ethiopia. He lives in Fayance, France, with his Ethiopian wife and his Ethiopian adopted son. Following are excerpts from the interview. Would you make a comparison between ancient Greece, Egypt and Ethiopia? How ancient are these countries?

The Perfect Mixture
in GIZA
Giza, that glorious governorate, has its roots extended to the very outset of the eternal Egyptian Civilization that has illuminated the land of the Nile Valley. It was in this governorate that the first capital of Egypt "Memphis" (now called Meet-Rahina) was set up three thousand years ago by King Men. Moreover, Giza has the eternal pyramids which are still testifying to the greatness of the Egyptian architecture. Giza is also priviliged by having Cairo University the largest and oldest academic University in the Middle East. The most important district It is no exaggeration to say that as far as tourism is concerned, Giza is considered the most important district in Egypt, since it contains a considerable number of ancient monuments, mineral and sulphuric springs, vast desert and a number of art and craft villages. In addition to these attractive facilities, there are fifty-two hotels of different classes accomodating more than 13,000 beds, 207 tourist establishments, including restaurants, cafeterias, and theatres opening their doors to tourists, as well as natives. We can say, assure, that Giza with all its touristic capabilities can afford to meet the requirement of the tourists of all ages and interests, including cultural, recreational, medical and contest tourism.

A comprehensive and accurate picture of the development of Egyptian civilization is not however, as clear as the preceding chronological listing implies. To put it quite bluntly, while the hieroglyphic language of the Egyptians was deciphered by Champollion in 1822 and succeeding generations of archaeologists have done admirable work in excavating, preserving and measuring the monumental architecture of the Egyptians, current Egyptological 'science' knows next to nothing about the origins of Egyptian civilization and the fundamental philosophy that underlaid it. This matter is far to complex to deal with in this essay but a few quotes from Egyptian specialists will alert my readers to the very limited knowledge we have concerning the ancient Egyptian culture and, most particularly, its origins.

The pyramids of Egypt , some of which are among the largest man-made constructions ever conceived , constitute one of the most potent and enduring symbols of Ancient Egyptian civilization. Although no ancient Egyptian rulers have been found buried in an Egyptian pyramid, it is generally accepted by most archaeologists that they were constructed as burial monuments associated with royal solar and stellar cults, and most were built during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods . Egyptian homes were built on the east bank of the river, the land where the Sun rises. Egyptians built the pyramids on the west bank of the River Nile. They believed this was the land of the dead, because the Sun sets there.

At far right is the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), in the middle and closer is the pyramid of Khafre (Chephren), and on left is the smallest of the three major Giza pyramids - that of Menkaure (Mycerinus). Three small subsidiary pyramids are at the extreme left. The photograph is a montage by Mark Rigby taken from a rocky outcrop to the southeast. There are about 110 pyramids currently known in Egypt, many in a state of great disrepair and almost unrecognisable. Some were built as burial places for kings and others for queens. A pyramid also may have represented a stairway for the king to ascend to the heavens. Another possibility is that it was symbolic of the primeval mound on which the sun god/creator was born. How the Egyptians managed the complex organisation of labour and the physical movement of large stone blocks is still a matter for debate. Pyramid construction may have involved ramps being erected around the pyramid. Blocks of stone would have been pulled up on sledges and the ramps dismantled later. It is believed that most of the labour for the construction of the pyramids would have come from farmers who were available during the inundation season when the Nile River flooded and farmland was underwater. It would also have been an ideal time for the transportation by boat of large stone blocks from their quarries to the pyramid sites. The earliest pyramid was the Step Pyramid

Memphis remained an administrative center when the capitol was moved to Thebes (Luxor) in the New Kingdom. The nobles from Memphis and many pharaohs were buried there. Several pyramids are located there, the most famous and most visible is the Djoser Step Pyramid. This pyramid was built before the Great Pyramids at Giza. Its architect was Imhotep who was made a god for his services. The Djoser complex includes a miniature city constructed so that the Pharaoh could work in the afterlife, just as he did in this life. The Djoser Pyramid complex had a heavy influence on the art deco movement in architecture and object d'art, as did all things Egyptian.

Information on Egyptian Pyramids
picture of the Great Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx Pyramids are large structures Ancient peoples in several parts of the world built, but the Egyptians constructed the biggest and most famous pyramids. The ancient Egyptians built more than 90 royal pyramids, from about 2630 BC until about 1530 BC. During that time, the pyramid form evolved from a series of stepped terraces to sloped pyramidal shape. The first pyramid, the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, was constructed during the reign of King Djoser (Zoser) (2630 BC-2611 BC). The largest pyramid is the one built for King Khufu, in Giza. Khufu’s pyramid, known as the Great Pyramid, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World that still survives. Egyptian pyramids served as tombs for kings and queens. After a ruler died, his or her body was carefully treated and wrapped to preserve it as a mummy. According to ancient Egyptian belief, the pyramid, where the mummy was placed, provided a place for the king to pass into the afterlife. In temples nearby, priests performed rituals to nourish the dead monarch’s spirit, which was believed to stay with the body after death. In the Old Kingdom Egyptian artists carved hieroglyphs on the walls of the burial chamber, designed to safeguard the dead monarch’s passage into the afterlife. These hieroglyphic writings, which include hymns, magical spells, instructions on how to act in front of the gods, and other pieces of useful knowledge, are known as the Pyramid Texts.

http://www.egyptspyramids.com/html/article.html
HOW THE EGYPTIANS BUILT THE PYRAMIDS
BY RICHARD KOSLOW If people can lift water with a counter weight, why not use the same principle to lift stones, huge stones, like the ones used to build the pyramids? Back in ancient Egypt, a device called a shadoof was commonly used to move water. A shadoof is a long pole, weighted at one end, perhaps with a stone, and a vessel on the other end, used for raising water to irrigate the land. They pulled down the vessel, filled it under the water, and then easily lifted it by the counter weight. These water lifting machines showed that the Egyptians knew something about weights, fulcrum, and balance long before they built the pyramids . This method of lifting heavy stones with a counter weight is an idea that I am sure Historians may have thought of in the past, but dismissed because there is no evidence that it was ever done with huge stones.
The most commonly held solution for moving these large blocks is to slide skids under the blocks so that many men would pull the skid along the ground and up ramps built around the pyramid to the level required. Pictured is a hieroglyphic panel showing the use of skids. Getting the block off the skid would be laborious enough, but moving the 5-ton block and placing it in its proper position in the pyramid by pushing and shoving seems inconceivable.

Is it Alexander, Plato, Virgil, Socrates, Hammurabi, Aristotle, Nefertiti, the Pharaohs, Emperors, Caesar, Cleopatra, Sargon, Akhenaton, the Black Athena, Homer? Or is it the dinosaurs, Stonehenge, hunters, slaves, women, rulers, soldiers, or the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Odyssey, the Olympics? Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.
