Egyptian Burial Chambers
A sarcophagus is a stone container for a coffin or body. Sarcophagi were usually carved, decorated or built ornately. Some were built to be freestanding above ground, as a part of an elaborate tomb . Others were made for burial , or were placed in crypts . In Ancient Egypt , a sarcophagus was usually the external layer of protection for a royal Egyptian mummy , with several layers of coffins nested within.

5 3/8 x 8 1/2 A renowned authority draws upon his original research to present a clear rendering of the complexities of Egyptian mythology-its gods, worship of the sun and animals, myths, concepts of the afterlife, and magical practices. The comparative view espoused by this book demonstrates that Egyptian religion was by no means as isolated in its growth as previously supposed. The development of religious doctrines, as portrayed in art as well as in literature, receives a close inspection. Magnificently illustrated, the text contains 232 figures that clarify ancient beliefs and customs.

For anyone who wants to know about Anubis, the terrifying canine god who presided over the mummification of bodies and guarded burials, or Hathor, the golden goddess who helped women to give birth and the dead to be reborn, or an explanation of the nun, the primeval ocean from which all life came, Egyptian Mythology is the place to look. So visually inspiring, culturally interesting, and a heady mix of power/passion/political intrigue/and heartless cruelty. My knowledge of the gods and goddesses is limited, but from what I read in your excerpts, the mythology should be a complimentary blend. Jule 2/2/2005, 11:20 pm

    A word of caution
This site is based on what is considered more or less orthodox chronology, which of course means that there are other, deviant chronologies. On the whole I prefer the plodding examination of facts however few and poorly understood to the flights of fancy of some of the alternative historians. Chances are it gets us a bit closer to the truth, which, unless timetravel is invented, we will never know.
One would like to think that physical remains should leave little to doubt. But stone artefacts and buildings are remarkably difficult to date [ ]. Theories - from the sublime to the ridiculous - of when, how, why and by whom the Great Pyramids, for instance, have been erected, are legion.

In ancient times each Egyptian city or region had its own god and worshipped many others. Read on to learn a few general things about ancient Egyptian religious beliefs. Who did they worship? . . . The ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods. Sometimes it's hard for us to tell who was who! These gods and goddesses often represented the natural world, for example the sky, earth, wind, or sun. They took the form of animals or combined animal and human forms.
Official religion . . . From ancient Egyptian writings we know that religion was very important in their society. The pharaoh performed rituals to the gods so that the world would be in harmony and to assure bountiful crops. These official state ceremonies were performed in temples throughout Egypt, but most Egyptians did not participate. Religion everyday . . . Popular religion took other forms. People used magical charms or amulets to ward off danger. They also worshipped popular gods and goddesses to help them with life events such as childbirth.

Who is this ferocious creature? Images of household gods were often displayed on altars in Egyptian homes. This is the goddess Taweret , one of the most popular. Taweret protected mothers and their children against the risks during pregnancy and birth. The goddess was usually depicted as a pregnant hippopotamus with the limbs and paws of a lion and a mane in the form of a crocodile's tail. Her frightening appearance was probably meant to scare away evil spirits. Egypt, Late Period
